Summary: Someone Like You
Review: Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen is a teenage fiction novel that is set in the present. The book focuses on a sixteen year-old girl named Halley who lives in a friendly neighborhood in Lakeview, Maryland. Halley has a strong bond and friendship with her best friend Scarlett, who is the more popular of the two while Halley, tends to just sit back and go along for the ride. The two are rarely separated. ride. Except for one week during the summer when Halley is forced to go to camp. But a phone call from Scarlett quickly brings her back home. Scarlett has some very bad news. Her boyfriend Michael has just been killed in a motorcycle accident and she needs Halley to come home and be there for her.
A few weeks later, Scarlett finds out that she is pregnant with Michaels baby. But Halley sticks right by her side doing everything a best friend should. She helps Scarlett break the news to her mom, drives her to doctor's appointments, and reads pregnancy books to her to help her prepare for the baby. But most importantly, Halley sticks up for Scarlett at school, when some people judge her for getting pregnant at sixteen, especially when the father of her child is dead.
Some changes happen for Halley also. Just when she thought she'd never have a boyfriend, she falls in love with Macon Faulkner. Halley never expected Macon would go out with someone like her. She always imagined him dating one of the more popular girls, perhaps someone like Scarlett. But Macon always insists there's no one else for him. He always surprises Halley with something, whether it is a candy in her back pocket or a note in her locker, and she eventually lets her walls down, knowing that Macon really does love her.
Despite her strong relationship with Macon, Halley never wants him to meet her parents. Macon, though a nice person, has a wild side to him. Sometimes he skips classes or goes out late at night without telling her where. Halley's mother, a shrink who specializes in mother-daughter problems, does not approve of Halley seeing Macon. Her mom wishes she would go out with Noah Vaughn, a nerd who also happens to be a great friend of the family. Halley's mom notices that Halley's behavior changed when she starting going out with Macon, perhaps because Halley acquired the wild side Macon has. Halley is convinced Macon is the right guy so she stays with him even against her mother's wishes.
In my opinion Someone Like You is an outstanding book. In fact I'd say its one of the best books I've ever read. I enjoyed it for a number of reasons. First of all, the author conveys good messages without lecturing about things. I also like how the book was centered on friendship and the obstacles Halley and Scarlett had to face as friends. The book also shows some of the tough situations you face as you get older.

Summary: "Life is an Ugly, Awful Place Not to Have a Best Friend"
Review: Halley and Scarlett have been best friends since fourth grade, when Halley tentatively walked up to Scarlett sitting alone on her front, and remembering all of the bossy and mean girls who pushed her around and sent her home crying to her mother; the little fiendettes on pink bicycles with Barbie carrying cases in their white, flower appliquéd baskets.

After going on a trip to the Grand Canyon, her mother immediately hangs up a picture of them two together, as if to remind them of the way things were later; as if she knew that things were about to change. So when Scarlett calls Halley up at her "Sisterhood Camp" that Halley's mother had forced her to go to, Halley knew something wasn't right even before Scarlett said anything. She soon is thrown into a world of change, where Scarlett's first love and former boyfriend, Michael, is dead from a motorcycle accident, and Scarlett is carrying his unborn child. Then, Halley meets Macon Faulkner, Michael's former best friend. Halley is introduced to a new world of first loves; pregnancy books; hard decisions, fighting with her mother; and most of all, friendship. Because after all, Halley and Scarlett's friendship can outlast anything... can't it?

Someone Like You is a spectacular book that teaches so many life lessons. It's a book that you won't put down from the minute that you pick it up, and will read over and over again- but it won't ever get old. The book seems to lure you in and never let go, with it's complex characters, thick plot, and outstanding feelings shown throughout the book. You feel as if you are Halley, and that you really do have a Scarlett ready to catch you when you fall. It's a disappointment when you finish book, but a delight when you pick it up to read it again for the twentieth time.

Halley is a shy, awkward girl who never seemed to fit in or have a best friend- until she met Scarlett, that is. Like her namesake comet, Halley tries to be special, and unconsciously is. Although possibly outshined by Scarlett, Halley doesn't mind being referred to as "Scarlett's friend, Halley," but accepts her side- kick status. Throughout the book, she seems to know her "right and wrongs," but chooses to ignore her conscience, or possibly her mother's voice. She's fascinated by these new situations, and tries to not believe some of the bad things that people who love her try to warn her about. But in the end, no matter what or who she tries to be, Halley is just Halley, a little bit of everybody she knows so well and loves; her mother's integrity, Scarlett's strength, and Macon's sly humor; special, like her comet, her grandmother, and most of all, herself.

A significant scene in the book is when Halley goes to visit her Grandma Halley, who was named after the comet and who Halley was named after. Grandma Halley is now bedridden after falling down and hurting herself, putting a temporary hold in Halley and her mother's fights. Halley squeezes her hand, hoping for the best, and wishing that everything would turn out all right.

Another memorable scene is when Macon is driving Halley home on around midnight on New Year's Eve, after having a fight with her and finding her lying on the dirt outside in the rain; vomiting; and wishing she were dead. Distracted by his anger, Macon runs through a red light and almost kills Halley when they get into a car crash. When Halley wakes up in the hospital an hour and a half later, Macon is nowhere to be found, and Halley realizes that Macon was never what she thought he was, and she was never what she thought she was.

This book, Someone Like You, is a great book, and I would definitely recommend it to anybody who likes books about friendships, trust, or even teenage pregnancy. But even if you don't, prepare to be captured forever by a book that will stay with you from the first sentence to the very last word.

Summary: Not just a book to do for a book report
Review: In English we had to pick a book for our monthy book reports. So being the procrastinator I am, I picked up the first thing I saw, Someone Like You. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I just thought I was reading a book for English. How wrong I was! I soon became addicted to this book, never putting it down. When it came time for geometry class, I cracked open my book as my teacher rambled about triangles of some sort.
The book is centered about Halley, who was known for being "Scarlett's friend." She and Scarlett had been friends since Scarlett sat on her stoop in her movie star glasses when she had moved into the neighborhood years before. Ever since then they knew everything about eachother. Then, during the last weeks of summer, Halley's mom sends her off to some pointless "sisterhood" camp. Halley and her mom used to be best friends, but lately they've seemed to have drifted from eachother. Halley gets a call one night from Scarlett who is drowned in tears. "Micheals dead", Scarlett manages to say. Michael Sherwood had been Scarlett's boyfriend for the summer. He was the type of guy everyone dreampt of, and now he was dead. This is the first time in Halley's life where Scarlett really needed Halley.
It isn't long before Halley falls head over heels for the bad boy, best friend of the late Michael Sherwood, Macon. This is her first real boyfriend, if you exclude Noah Vaughn who she was practicly forced by her mother to date. Macon and Halley? How could this be? Why would Macon Faulkner want to date "Someone Like Her?"
Then suddenly Halley's life changes. Scarlett calls her into the restroom to tell her that she is pregnant; with Michael's baby. She had never told anyone that she had even done it with him. Probably because a day after he was dead.
So now Scarlett needed Halley. Halley needed Macon. And Macon needed Halley's mother's approval. After all he wasn't exactly the boy she had in mind for her daughter. Will all the pressure make their friendship crumble, or turn it into a diamond showing everyone that they can make it throght the hardest of times?

Summary: Life Changing Story
Review: Being a teenager, Halley Cooke has normal teenage problems, but for the most part she is smart and sure of herself, always having her best friend, Scarlett Thomas to lean on whenever she needs her. Not long after school starts, Halley begins to go out with Macon Faulkner. Macon's best friend was Scarlett's summer-long boyfriend, Michael Sherwood who died in a tragic motorcycle accident a couple of weeks before school started.

While working at Milton's, the local grocery store, Scarlett reveals shocking news to Halley; that she is pregnant, and Michael is the father. Although no one takes the news well, Scarlett decides to keep her baby. Through Scarlett's pregnancy, and Halley's tough break-up with her boyfriend, the two best friends have each other through thick and thin. Together, they learn How To Deal.

I definitely recommend Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen for all and any. This remarkable book not only teaches you how to appreciate the life you have, but to think before you make your decisions; may you be making the most important decision you've ever made in your life, or choosing what to wear to the next school dance. No matter how big or how small, everything you do is important.

Summary: Someone Like You By: Sarah Dessen
Review: I think that the book Someone Like You is a good book. I think that if you don't
really read books you should reed this one. It really keeps you guessing and on the
edge of your seat. Someone Like You is a book that you wouldn't want to stop
reading it until you were done.
Someone Like You has two main characters. The two characters are Halley and
Scarlett. When you met Halley as a normal teenager that's away at sister hood
camp. Then you come to realizes that she is not a normal teenager as you think.
You find this out by the flashbacks. Flashback is when an author wants you to show
you something that has already happened. While Halley is at camp she gets a phone
call from Scarlett telling Halley that their friend Michael Sherwood died in a
motorcycle accident. Michael and Scarlett had been girlfriend and boyfriend over
the summer. When Halley started school she fell in love with a "bad boy" named
Macon. He was the second boyfriend she had. He parents really didn't like him
because they really had meet him. They didn't approve of him because he call at all
hours of the night and when she didn't pick up he would hang up. Scarlett is a whole
different person from Halley. Scarlett lives with her mom, but Scarlett acts more like
the mother. Scarlett seems to find herself in some trouble though-out the book. Soon
Scarlett finds out that she's pregnant with Michael's baby. When she find this out
she learns that she's going to need Halley more then ever. When Scarlett tells her
mom, she's faced with many decisions. Two of them are either give up the baby or
keep it.
When Halley is grounded for her birthday Macon comes and has her sneak out.
When she dose that he takes her to a cliff. Another literary element used by the
author is imagery. I think that the way the author decried it made me fell like I was
really on the cliff with them. Imagery is describing some in great detail. The author
use imagery thought-out the book. Like when she decried the house where Halley
and Scarlett lived and how the ward were and how the other people in the book
were and acted. If you didn't have a clue what kind of neighborhood Halley and
Scarlett lived in, you would know from the details the author used.
Someone Like You show a lot of emotions that teens show. It also shows with
Halley and Macon that, if your boyfriend really loves you they will wait and not
pressure you to have sex until your ready. I think that it's a good book to read if
you want to find out what some people have to go thought when they end up
pregnant. Also that your shouldn't be pressured into having sex by your boyfriend or
girlfriend. If they really had feelings for you they would wait.

Summary: My opinion on the book Some one like you By Melissa Hulbert
Review: Everyone reads books. You might even find a book that you really enjoy. I read the book Someone like you by Sarah Dessen.I really enjoyed this book a lot.
My book has two main Charecters in it. The first Charecter in my book is Halley. Halley is a normal teenager that faces every day problems like her parents, school, work and boys. Halley's mom thinks it's a good idea for her to go to a sisterhood camp over summer vacation. She falls in love with a boy named Macon. Her parents don't quite approve of him,but she dosen't care. The second charecter is Scarlett Thomas. Scarlett lives at home with her mother. Scarlett seems to find herself in a lot of trouble. She meets this boy named Michael Sherwood and falls in love with him. She soon finds out that she is pregnet with his baby. Scarlett also finds out that Michael has been killed in a motorcycle accident. She relises she needs Halley a lot because with out her she would have nobody. Scarletts mom wants her to give the baby up for adoption. As the year goes on Halley and Scarlett relise they need each other more then ever. The story takes place in a small quite town called Lake view.
Some literary elements that were used by the autor were things like imagery. At certain points in the book the details she was giving were great. When Halley and Malcon were at the top of a cliff she described it and it almost felt as if I were there. The setting of the Book was very exact. She decribed how looking out of Halleys window you could see Scarlett fron across the street. The author also told how the yards looked and the houses in her neigborhood looked. Sarah Dessen describes her charecters in every detail. She gave everything from how they look to evey little thing they do in specific detail.
I personaly thought Someone Like You was a great book. I liked it most of all because it deals with some issues that teens face everyday. Like getting pressured to have sex and girls at sixteen getting pregnet. The girl Scarlett still manages to go to school and do the things she does everyday. Halley learns that getting pressured to have sex isn't something that is just going to go away. I would recommend this book to teenage girls.I think they would find this book interesting and hopefully they would recommend it to someone else.
