Summary: Not Androids
Review: I, too, loved Androids. I hoped that all of Dick's stuff would be as good. Not so.

A lot of the time, I had no idea what was going on. I got hung up on the date of 1994; everyone says things like "dig" and listens to Cat Stevens music. I wish he hadn't told us a date.

Not a page turner. For serious fans only.

Summary: a study in the nature of reality
Review: A friend gave me this book in order to bing me into PKD's fold. I've read other books of his since, but none has pulled me into the lives of the characters in quite the same way. By the time I reached the end I was probably no more able to trust the "validity of [my own] perceptual reality" than was the protagonist.

Summary: Puzzling, eerie, scary, hilarious, prophetic....
Review: Dick transcends conventional ideas about what fiction can accomplish in "A Scanner Darkly." He successfully incorporates chaotic elements into the narrative, a la William Burroughs, without letting it slip into confusion. You'll scratch your head throughout the book, but the ending makes it all worthwhile. A book for the postmodern generation, it explores what identity means when we're seen from a thousand different perspectives at once. A must-read book!

Summary: Not as good as his others
Review: Dick is one of my favorite writers. I loved Do Androids and Ubik and Confessions of a Crap Artist. But this one found boring and derivitive of William Burroughs. I advise others to skip it.

Summary: Dislocation of the self
Review: This is not a review but more a test of memory, and as memory is a very Phillip Dick subject then this does not seem problematic to me. I read the book once, and a long time ago, but I remember the immense influence it had on my own beliefs about the nature of human reality.Characters, plot, conversation, etc. all seem hazy now but the only abiding 'memory' is that Phillip Dick had gone down avenues the majority would not care to navigate. This book, and J.G Ballard's 'Crash', are to me the new bibles of the late 20th century. In fact, perhaps both bible and road atlas combined. Both must be read to help us understand ourselves and to realise we are not who we think we are.

Summary: Amazing, scary, brillant and disturbing.
Review: One of Dicks top 10. An incredible book, especially (although not exclusively) for those who have experimented with drugs themselves. Other great Dick books are (from the best down): UBIK, A Maze of Death, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldrich, Now Wait for Last Year, Do Androids Dream... Definitly my favorite fiction writer.

Summary: my brain is fried
Review: Ok, i must admit, so i didn't exist during the 60's-70's massive drug taking psychedelic hippie era. But, i still enjoyed this book. I don't see how anyone couldn't. My mind tumbled, flipped and turned and split in half right down the middle. Why aren't more books like this? Why didn't anybody suggest this book to me sooner? I had to go searching to the other sides of the universe for this author. There aren't any adjectives left to descirbe PKD other than...cool.

Summary: A really amazing novel...
Review: I had read a lot of Philip K. Dick's short stories, but this was one of the first novels I bought, and it blew me away - Totally. It is one of the best books I've ever read: Amazingly written, it flows so well. It's very easy to read, and very entertaining. One of the most noteworthy things here is the dialogue, which is quite simply, the best, most realistic and coolest dialogue I've ever read! This book has it all - Laugh-out-loud humour, real emotive tragedy, and it's hip, too! It's just totally cool, and I should definitely read it again, soon... I can even recommend this to non-sf fans, because there's not really very much sf in here - The sf is used as a device, to allow some parts of the novel to work properly, but it's not really about sf topics, at all. I would say more, but I have to go right now! BUY THIS BOOK!

Summary: Mind Blowingly Groovey
Review: This was the first PKD book i read, ive read loads since but i still think of this as one of his best.
It has some of the most funny as well as the most shocking scenes he ever wrote.
If you read it you'll never be the same again.

Summary: do not miss this one!!!
Review: this book is SO seventies, as well - it's complete and utter time travel to a time when stoned crazies drove up and down the Five in ancient VW Bugs with the floorboards showing pavement. I am totally in love with the woman in this story, too - the portrait Dick paints of her in this novel is one of the most beautiful things i've ever read.
