Rating: Summary: This is an awesome book. Review: I loved this book! I recommended it to all my friends and they all say they liked it. Even one of my friends that doesn't normally like to read, loved it!
Rating: Summary: I can't find the ten star button Review: I notice that Pullman's Sally Lockhart Trilogy are all rated 'Young Adult'. Who made that dumb decision? Pullman is eminently readable by anyone from 10 to 100 (and I should know, because I'm about halfway between the two!). Put simply - no matter what age you are, if you read just ONE Philip Pullman book, you'll be totally hooked. He has the rare ability to draw his readers into his story-telling right from the first pages, and he doesn't let go of you until he's finished spinning his yarn. He doesn't exactly attack you, but he sure has a mean way with words, that will leave a firm grip on your throat for a long while after the final page has been turned. He also has an exquisite command of characterization. Not for Pullman the weak, wishy-washy characters. His positively jump off the page at you and drag you into their world of Victorian London. There's something of Dickens in Pullman's stuff. The good guys are very good and the bad guys are very bad. But that makes it sound trite and clichéd - which it isn't. It's much more complex than that, which probably explains why Philip Pullman is one of the few authors from this side of The Big Pond, who succeeds on that side of The Big Pond. The Sally Lockhart trilogy is on my list of 'Books you MUST read before you die'. And since I'm no longer a Young Adult, I've made sure to read them quickly!
Rating: Summary: A bit disappointing... Review: I was looking forward to reading 'The Tiger in the Well' after enjoying the first 2 books in the Sally Lockhart Trilogy. But after a huge build up of exciting events during which Sally and her young daughter Harriet try to protect themselves from the threat of the evil Tzaddik, I had worked out the twist halfway through the book and was very much let down by the ending. Not the best offering from Pullman.
Rating: Summary: the best in the series Review: If you are thinking about buying this book, you probably familiar with sally lockheart and the first 2 books in this series. And you are familiar with pullman "can't put the book down" writing, and already attached to the well known and loved characters. This book happens 2 years after the ending if the last one, sally has grown more and matured, as well as her business and her place in life, she made a few more friends, and life seem prefect - until in a brief moment, everything seem to collapse. What i love mostly about the book and the entire series, except of the intriguing plot, is pullman's ability to examine "serious" social issues and combine them in the story. In "ruby in the smoke" it was a lot about the politics of drugs, in the " shadow in the north" it was about classes and weapons, and in this one is about the pre-word war Jewish immigration and socialism vs. capitalism. it examine the writers opinions without being to preachy and showing some ways of thinking without being to confusing. I also enjoy pullman's level of research and his many reference to actual London the way it was in the Victorian period, i was reading this book with my sister who just spend a while in London and it was really nice to check if she knows those places today and in what ways have the different part of the city changed. It's a slightly creepier book and scarier and probably fit for a bit older crowed then the first and second book. I'm 28 and some part of it gave me the chills, so other then young kids, i recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: 5 stars plus!!!! Review: IF you haven't read the Sally Lockhart triology, you MUST READ IT!!!!!! They are the best books that I have ever read, and no joke. Phillip Pullman is one of the best writers for today. He has a way of capturing the reader so you want to finish the book all at once, and never put it down until you finish it. The Sally Lockhart triology is very good and suspensful. There is always a good mystery in the books, and they have great endings. The thing that first caught my attention were the great titles that Phillip Pullman gave them, and unlike most authors, the title actually had something to do with the story. His characters are unforgetable, and amusing. He writes with such vigor and does it wonderfully. I just can't say everything that I want to, but just read these books, and you will see what I mean. "Ruby in the Smoke," the first one, "Shadow in the North," second one, and "Tiger in the Well," the last in the trilolgy.
Rating: Summary: PHILIP PULLMAN RULES!! Review: In my opinion, PHILIP PULLMAN RULES! All of the Sally lickhart books are great, but this on is spectacular. Philip Pullman gives you your suspence, drama, mystery with a light twist of romace (okay, a BIG twist of romance.) After this you MUST read Tin Princess (don't read his other trilogy first, like I did)
Rating: Summary: The Tiger in the Well Review: In my opinion, The Tiger in the Well is a good read, but not up to the standard of the Ruby in the Smoke, and the Shadow in the North. The plot drags on, and did not really involve me. The idea was very innovative, and the story chilling, but it did not seem to be portrayed with the suspense and depth of the first or second books. However, there were several positive sides to the book. Sally's growth as a character was central to this book, and her personality and feelings are explored to a much greater extent than in other books. For the first time, Sally seems vulnerable, even afraid, rather than confident, which is an interesting twist in the series. The introduction of new characters is also interesting. Overall, it is still a good book, and a must for any fans of Philip Pullman, if you're willing to put up with a drawn out plot lacking some of the suspense of the previous books.
Rating: Summary: fabulous Review: In the third and and final book of the Sally Lockhart series Sally embarks on a final mystery to save her 2 year old daughter. This book start when Sally is having a picnic in her backyard when a strange man comes and gives her a letter. The letter concerns a man called Mr.Arther Parrish claiming to be Sally's husband and the father of sally's young daughter Harrit. Sally ends up finding out why a man wants to hurt her so badly. Sally faces many dangers and meets old enemies from previous adventures. This book is one of the best I recomend it to anybody (even if you don't like to read).
Rating: Summary: Well Written Review: In this sequel to the first two books in the Sally Lockhart Trilogy, Phillip Pullman delivers a gem. Sally's love-of-her-life, Fred, has just died leving her pregnant. But, Sally is independent and has lived for two years successfully with her now young daughtor, Harriet. But her life is about to change, because someone named Parrish is after her. And what starts out as a false divorce petition soon sends Sally and her allies into a huge struggle full of fights, spying, hiding, and adventure. Sally also meets some new characters in this book including Mr. Daniel Goldberg. But, I won't tell you the surprise ending!
Rating: Summary: I miss my favorite characters! Review: My favorite characters, which were in the first book, and mostly in the second book, weren't in there! They were off in South America! So many things would have been better if they would have been there! I love the first and second book, but this one just doesn't impress me as much. It depends on how stuck you get on particular characters.
