Rating: Summary: The Journal of a Medieval Teenager Review: Catherine tells the story of her fourteenth year in her journal. Her brother, who is studying to become a monk, has persuaded her to keep the journal as a means of helping her to grow "less childish." Growing up in thirteenth century England, Catherine's life seems to be predestined. Her mother's only concern is that she grow up to become a lady, while her father is engrossed in arranging her marriage to the most profitable suitor. Yet Catherine dares to dream of a different future for herself and, more than anything, wants to be able to determine her own destiny. Teens should love this glimpse of life in another time and the lighthearted tale of a feisty young teenager.

Catherine must marry the man her horrible father chooses. The teenager does great things to send these guys packing! Her approaches are hilarius and universal in the dating game. Some serious moments about life in stoic times. A fast and interesting read!
Rating: Summary: a growing-up tale Review: In this delightful tale by Karen Cushman, a twelfth-century heroine matures from a rambunctious, argumentative, self-centered young mischiefmaker into a gracious, loving young lady. Despite some earthy language appropriate to the times, Birdy tells her story with all the innocence of a child who is loved and who is certain that all the world revolves around her - much like current adolescents! A wonderful read for middle scholars.
Rating: Summary: A fun book Review: Catherine is 14 years old in 1290, England. The book is in the form of her diary. Her father is trying to marry her off to the highest bidder. Catherine does not look forward to being a wife, especially considering some of the suitors that come to visit. This book is fun to read and gives you a glimpse at "teenage" life in Medieval England. Sure there is some "crass" language, but it is nothing vulgar.I think this book would encourage readers to find out more about the Middle Ages in England.
Rating: Summary: The book you can't put down! Review: This book is exciting, incredibly funny, and hard to put down. This book is the diary that comes out and says everything a girl is thinking. Catherine is so alive and real, you can't believe its just a book. I suggest this book to everyone!

Rating: Summary: Catherine Called Birdie Review: This story takes place in the shire of Lincoln in a countryside of England. Catherine lives with her family and searvants in the Manor of Stonebridge. Cathreine, called birdie writes in her journal how she is unhappy. She is pressured by her greedy father who is determined to find a husband for her. Catherine does not want to marry anyone her father picks out,let alone marry. As a result of her stubborness, attitude, and careless thinking,Catherine either gets locked in her room or she is forced to sew and embroider. To make sure that the men chosen by her father will not be at all interested in her, Catherine makes herself look dirty and ugly. To her surprise and dismay, and no matter what she does to be unattractive, he finds someone who likes her. This someone os so old and ugly himself, that Catherine refers to him as "Shaggy Beard." She then tries to convince her father that she is not going to marry him. Throughout the book, relatives and friends enter Catherine's life and teach her about what it means to be herself. As the old Jewish woman says, "Remember,in the world to come, you will not be asked 'why were you not George?' or 'why were you not Perkin?', but why were you not Catherine?'." As she decides that she cannot run away, she matures and becomes a woman. Because we all have struggles and trials in our lives; I thought this was a good book. Personally, I had hoped the author could have told moer about how Catherine spent the rest of her life. Books from the Medieval time periodinterest me because hey seem to take me to a new world. Travel as I did and read Catherine Called Birdie.
Rating: Summary: this was my 6th grade book report and i got a A+ ! Review: Catherine Called Birdy Catherine Called Birdy is not about your average damsel in distress and is willing to do anything so that she does not have to marry against her will. Catherine¡¯s father is a greedy toad that is willing to sacrifice anything, even his daughters happiness to have a rich man married into his family, but not if Catherine has anything to do with it. Now Catherine was not like most young ladies in the Middle Ages but was a clever, mischievous tomboy. What she thinks made a fine young lady was someone dumb, docile and accomplished. So far this cunning girl managed to rid her self of many suitors, but when the ugliest, most revolting man comes, he just happens to be the richest. This determined girl¡¯s tricks did not work on this man and her father made sure that Catherine didn¡¯t do anything to hurt her chances. Was Catherine going to have to marry this man or was she going to able to pull herself out of this marriage? Recommendation I would recommend everybody reading this because it takes place in Medieval England and shows the point of view from a lady in these times. Women probably all felt at one point or another like Catherine and that would be feeling trapped. Even if this book does not inform you much about the Middle Ages it is very interesting and funny. This book comes in diary form and is very informative that way.
