Summary: Something for All Ages
Review: Strength through adversity, hope growing out of despair, this book has something for people of all ages. Sometimes it takes a childlike perspective to remind all of us about the timelessness of true wisdom. Also recommend Storybook Mentors and The Little Prince

Summary: Kitchen wisdom at it's best
Review: This is a book that any age would enjoy--you don't have to be young to get great meaning from it.
I am hoping that Aunt Addie will soon be publishing a cookbook--the food mentioned in the book had me watering at the mouth!!

Summary: Heart melting fun...
Review: "Hope Was Here" is only my second Bauer book. I stumbled upon this accomplished writer entirely by accident, and it turned out to be a great discovery. This story holds more meaning today before September 11th. The cover depicts the New York City skyline with the title "Hope Was Here" over it. But the inside is an even better treat. The story is about an aspiring young waitress and the hardships that come along with moving to a new place. It is also about the struggle she goes through to understand why her mother left her to be raised by her aunt when she was young. Hope and her aunt, a wonderful chef, set out for Welcome Stairways diner in Wisconsin from years of city life in New York and Atlanta. The diner is owned by the kind-hearted G.T. Stoop, who has just announced he will be running for mayor although he has been diagnosed with cancer. The other candidate for mayor has been the mayor for two terms, and many people are not ready to let their town's fate into the hands of a dying man. From there, Hope sets out on the campaign trail and learns about dirty politics, life, and love.

Summary: awesome, awesome, awesome!
Review: i highly reccomend this book to anyone! it is soo entertaining and beautifully written. anybody who enjoys reading (like i do) will like it, no matter what kind of book you're into. even though the plot is funny and the characters are quirkey Hope was Here is also designed to make you think without knowing it. you wil start wondering the dynamics of politics when Hope gets involved in a campaign for mayor. you will also learn the hardships of having feelings for someone without meaning for them when Hope is asked out by a guy she didn't even know she liked. all of this is why i think anyone could enjoy this book.

Summary: Totally Awesome
Review: This is a great book! It is wonderful for teenagers because of all the teens in the book, yet adults would love it too for its warmth, honesty, and sincerity. I have had it for less than a week and have read it twice. I had never read any of Joan Bauer's work before, but I will certainly find more of her books to read. This book is sensitive, dramatic, and will make you laugh, make you cry, make you angry, and will touch your heart forever. I highly recommend this book as well as "Eleanor Hill" (by a different author). Also, check out 1373221.betaweb.org for a list of some of the best-ever books.

Summary: One Of The Best Books Around!
Review: I have read many books, and Hope Was Here is one of the BEST that I have ever read. Joan Bauer, the author, did an excellent job on this book. The writing is flawless, and I love the way that Bauer compares life to waitressing. Hope Was Here is a book that has everything in it. There are some funny parts, but this book doesn't need humor to make it good. Hope Was Here also has many messages in it, so it's a great read for anyone, whether you're nine or ninety. If you haven't read Hope Was Here, you are missing out on a great story!!

Summary: Too Similar
Review: I thought that this book was too similar to Joan Bauer's other book Rules of the Road. Although I enjoyed both very much, they are very close in terms of character qualities and themes of each story. I hope that you have also noticed these similarities, however still enjoyed these books.

Summary: GREEAAATT!
Review: this is book is really really good..its sort of sounds like it was set in the 1950's or something...i might not even guess its set in today if they didn't mention the internet! hope is a very strong character..and all the other characters are so, so interesting!! the story takes you on an amazing journey in hope's life..one that you will definitely never forget...

Summary: Touching and Inspiring
Review: Hope was Here was a book about a girl named Hope that started small and aspired to something greater than I could have ever imagined. The amount that she accomplished in her life was amazing, and the appreciation she had for each aspect was heart warming. The joy she found was wonderful and will give everyone who reads it the hope that the characters are able to find to radiate their love for each other.

Summary: Hope Was Here was great.... please read her other books too!
Review: I've personally had the opportunity to speak with Mrs. Bauer during the spring of 2001 and can tell you that she's as delightful a person as her books are. Hope was Here is truly a magnificent work of young adult fiction that not only every teenager should read, but every adult as well. Digging deep into the heart of small town America and political sabotage, Joan Bauer gives it all and a piece of herself as well. If you liked this book, I most definitely suggest you check out Sticks, Squashed, and especially Rules of the Road ...as they are all spectacular works....
