Rating: Summary: Kool Review: Hope was here, by Joan Bauer, is a fascinating and funny glimpse of one girls life, a life filled with good food, romance, eccentricities and family. Hope is our sixteen year old narrator, a waitress working with her aunt in a rural town's diner, who takes a humourous view on her unusual life. Reading Hope's voice is like talking to an old friend. Miss Bauer created a likable character, but Hope does have her faults which makes her all the more real to us. Not only are the characters great in this book. The author wrote with lots of description and feeling, allowing readers to feel grief when sorrowful events occur, happiness when happy things happen, feel every sensation, taste every food. Whether you're looking for a good laugh, a good cry, or just a good story, Hope Was Here has something for everyone.By the way, that was for my school review. ---Meg

Rating: Summary: A Fun Filled Adventure! Review: Hope Yancey is the main character of the fun and food filled adventure, Hope Was Here, by Joan Bauer. Hope is a 16-year-old girl who has been raised by her Aunt Addie ever since her mother left her as a baby. Hope and Addie both work in the restaurant business with Hope as a waitress and Addie as a manager who's always coming up with a new dish. As the story starts they are leaving Brooklyn to go to Mulhoney, Wisconsin to work in a new restaurant. Hope hates leaving and every time she has to leave she writes hope was here somewhere on the place she's leaving. So after writing hope was here in tiny letters on the old boarded up diner they set out for their new life. Well there are great adventures ahead for them in Mulhoney. Not only in the restaurant business but also helping in a campaign, meeting new friends, finding romance and so much more. Joan Bauer's writing style, the fast paced plot and the fact that the story is told through the eyes of a 16-year-old make this book very appealing to young adult readers, but it is also written in such a way that adults will enjoy this novel as well. This is certainly one of Joan Bauer's best books and is totally deserving of the Newberry Honor Award, which it received in 2001.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book that is worth reading Review: This book was excellent. We found it hard to put down. The characters, and their attitudes and personalities, were funny, strong, and believable. Hope definitely lived up to her name. Her enthusiasm and positive attitude toward life inspired us. We admire GT's decision to live his life day by day. GT taught us the importance of living each day as if it is your last. We're looking forward to reading Joan Bauer's Rules of the Road next.
Rating: Summary: A Story of Hope Review: Hope Yancey and her Aunt Addie are moving out of New York City to a small town in rural Wisconsin. Addie and Hope are both waitresses and serious about it. The new restaraunt that Hope and Addie are working at is called "Welcome Stairways" and not kidding when they say they're the best restaraunt in town. The manager, G.T. Stoop who has cancer gives new meaning to Hope's life. Even though G.T. is close to his death, he runs for mayor against the rich, Eli Millstone, who has to much power to be denied. Hope gets a touch of politics and finds out that it isn't as easy as she thought it would be. Hope strives to match up to her name and I think she succeeded greatly!
Rating: Summary: A Truly Great Book Review: Wow. This was a great read, tackling real-life issues while being warm and humorous. Pre-teens and teens would really appreaciate this book. Hope is a great waitress/politician/role model! I love how Hope is so real, and I love her general outlook on life. I would also recommend Backwater and Rules of the Road, also by Joan Bauer.
Rating: Summary: A novel for Everyone Review: Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer has fast become one of my favorites. Reading just one chapter shows the author's incredible writing abilities. Hope is a 16-year-old "city girl" who has been working in the food industry since she was fourteen. Her mother, incapable of raising Hope appropriately gave Hope to her Aunt Addie as a baby. Hope's childhood was rocky for more reasons than her birth name (Tulip), she and her Aunt Addie are always on the move from town to town until the diner at which they're employed is run out of business or worse. With only occaisional appearances from her mother, Hope has grown to become an independant. The adventure begins when Addie and Hope leave the New York diner where they've been for several years for a small town in Wisconson. There, a cast of delightful characters come to life so vividly, you feel as though you've known them your entire life. G.T., the short order cook and owner of the new diner announces that he is running for mayor during a parade, making Hope's life even more hectic. There's plenty for everyone, adventure, love, anger, loss, and hapiness. A must read.
