This book is a rare gem--one of the best books I've read with such little fanfare attached to it. This book will not only tempt your taste buds, but it will satisfy your soul. In Hope's world of constant change, she finds something in this story to care about and work for. I don't want to give away any of the story, but I can testify that it is simple yet incredibly honest and interesting. You should read it and find out for yourself why this book is so good (it most definitely deserves the Newbery Honor).
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Surprisingly Fun Review: If you've had a hard day at school, a hard day a work, or you just want some good old "chicken soup for the soul," "Hope Was Here" will feed you like not many other books can. I'll spare you a plot summary, and get right to my opinions and thoughts about this book. First of all-I've gotta say it-I was NEVER bored when I was reading this book! Hope was an insightful, witty, intersting, inspiring and just plain fun character that she kept me hooked. Other characters were just as delectable, too-G.T. Stoop, the completely kind and benevolent owner of the restaurant Hope and her aunt work at, who is determined to campaign for mayor despite leukemia; Hope's Aunt Addie, who "pulls life's truths from a chicken"; and Braverman, the grill man who is "almost" Hope's boyfriend. I loved watching Hope and her friends campaign tirelessly for G.T. to become mayor-so refreshingly different from yet another "girl" book about boys, hair, and clothes. I loved finding little treasures of unique and truly funny wit where I least expected to. I loved seeing Hope's optimism and the touching truths about life embedded in the pages of the Newbery Winner. To conclude, I-you guessed it-loved this book!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Hope Was Here Review: I love this book! ! ! I really liked how the book was told from the point of view of a teenager. I can really relate to the book when it has a girl my age, going through life and telling the readers how it feels. Hope, has to go through a lot in this book and sometimes there are not a lot of people there to support her through her decisions. Hope has lost some very valuble things through out her life and reading Hope Was Here will give you an inside view of how teen life might really be.But of course anybody can read it. Hope Was Here is a great book and I would recommend it to any teenage girl looking for a good book to read.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The best coming-of-age book written yet. Review: Once in awhile a book comes along that inspires you. The book seemingly changes your outlook on life by making you say to yourself, "yeah, this is what life is *really* about." This... is one of those kinds of books. I came to this book with high expectations. It had received rave reviews and won multiple awards, but that didn't mean it was really going to be a good book, much less one I would adore forever. In fact, rarely does a book reward you as such when your expectations are already so high. However, this book came through and even managed to add plenty of further rewards. The emotional roller coaster ride I took while I read the book was nothing less than exhilarating. I laughed and cried, and experienced plenty of emotions such as fear, worry, joy, sorrow, love, devotion, and most importantly.... hope. Hope is the nemesis of the book after all. A play on words providing the namesake of such a worthy character. The name she chose for herself wasn't a whimsical decision. It came with a great contemplation of what her life would be about. Hope, whose original dreadful name was Tulip, spread the sensitive emotion of hope like a powerful contagion to all. Not meaning only characters in the book, but also to the readers. Each character is colorful and distinct. Addie, the perfectionist cook; Deena, the earthy but remote birth-mother; Braverman, the quite amiable extremist; G.T., the tender yet vigorous chieftain; Flo, the sincere comrade; Deputy Babcock, the honorable law officer; Yuri, the genteel Russian; Lou Ellen, the coarse but determined co-worker; and most importantly Hope, the courageously hopeful sixteen year old girl who leaps forward to face head-on the trials of life. The only two downfalls to the book are first, the book ends. It's such a good book you never want it to even possibly end. Then two, it makes you hungry. Not just hungry for more, as obviously you must feel if you don't want it to ever end, but hungry as in wishing you could eat the food prepared in the book. After all, Hope is a waitress and Addie is *the* best cook apparently in the world. Put the two together and you have a mouth-watering book in which you find yourself looking for a diner similar to that of the Welcome Stairways. Yet, this is a minor issue. ;-) 5th graders will find it easy to read, but some of the content may not be as interesting to them until 6th or 7th grade. Life's lessons include civic duty, compassion, responsibility, honesty, and fairness. Though the book contains general civic politics, it mercifully does so in a positively non-partisan way and just as mercifully does not contain any offensive subjects such as sex, abuse, and so many other repulsive topics typical of teen books today. Simply put, the book is magical but not in the Harry Potter way. Just in the way you feel you can accomplish anything you truly wish to.

Hope goes through hard times at Welcome Stairways, like falling in love, G.T's campaign, and G.T. and her aunt get married. This book was the best of all time. And for your info, it also made me hungry!!!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: "Hope was here" inscribed all the places she went Review: My first reading of the summer and I have to say it was a good pick. "Hope was here" is the inscription that Hope (AKA Tulip) leaves wherever she goes. Raised by her Addie, her aunt, they both work at restautants and diners as they make their way. Hope, often works as a waitress, and is she good! Maybe, because she wants her almost non-existant mother to be proud and visit more. Hope has never stayed in one place too long and has experienced betrayal a few times past, be she moves on. To all her friends she always says she'll write and come back to visit. She writes.., the letters eventually stop from both ways and she never does go back to any place. I would classify this as a drama, just because of the stuggles throughout which Hope learns to accept as part of life. At the restaurant she works at called, "Welcome Stairways" (if you read the book it has an awesome meaning!)in her new town. There Hope finds romance, love of all sorts, appreciation, good vs. evil, ... but most of all she finds HOPE.

This book shows that life doesnt end just because you want it to. You have to keep going even when this look like it's gonna come out for the worst...
