Rating: Summary: A definite MUST READ! Review: The Three Musketeers series is so aesthetically written. The characters literally take hold of you and pull you back in time with them. There is an amplitude of adventure within each chapter. If you are attracted to sword fighting and galantry, then these books are for you. It would not be very sagacious to avoid reading these novels!
Rating: Summary: No Movie can Come Close Review: Incredible action, adventure, and romance for all ages! Dumas is the greatest writer in the world!
Rating: Summary: If you have seen the movie you MUST read the book!!! Review: The only thing there is in common between the book and the movie are only the names of the characters. I just saw the movie and it is the worst joke I've ever seen. The book is my favorite since it includes sequels of adventure, romance, drama, stategy (just like you expect the honor of any honorable man in the XVII century). Read it!!!
Rating: Summary: Hey, it's just the best ever! Review: You know, this book is quite the most irresistable book anyone could ever have read. If you haven't read it, please read it. The paces are fast, the plot is fine, and the charators are cool. Really. I've always liked Athos the best, then it's d'Artagnan. This is the best of the Three Musketeers trilogy, and if you read this book, you better go read Twenty Years After. It's just as exciting as The Three Musketeers. You know, does any of you like Lady de Winter? I actually likes her a lot. She's so beautiful and intelligent, though she's, like, cold-blooded. I'm pretty saddened to find her murdered by my favorite d'Artgnan and Athos, of course, and Aramis, Prothos, Lord de Winter, and the executor. Anyway, I think anyone who haven't read this book should read it, or YOU HAVE LIVED FOR NO MEANS!! Admit it (at least, I've admitted it for a million of times since I picked up The Three Musketeers), ALEXANDRE DUMAS IS THE BEST WRITER EVER IN HUMAN HISTORY!!!! You do agree, do you not? ^O^Catherine Lee
Rating: Summary: Better than any movie Review: Have you only seen Musketeer movies without reading the original book? Then, you're in for a surprise! Dumas' novel isn't as absolutely funny nor as absolutely solemn as many directors tend to present it -actually, The Three Musketeers is a well-balanced story where you can laugh and cry at different moments, as in real life. Of course, the action scenes are great, but I think those chapters in which the characters only talk between them are much better, like when D'Artagnan looks for his friends after the diamond studs affair. I strongly recommend anyone to read this book and fall in love with the personifications of Nobility, Strength, Intelligence and Courage, or Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan, as Dumas named them, and discover why the book is named The Three Musketeers when they were actually four.
Rating: Summary: The absolute best book in the world! Review: I loved this book. You could really relate to the characters and you felt as if you were right there in all of the action. The way they delt with both Milady and the evil Cardinal was fantastic, and d'Artangnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are the best ever. Everyone should read this!
Rating: Summary: If this is one of the 100 greatest books, we're in trouble. Review: As a former Marine sergeant and martials arts instructor, Dumas' highly romantic treatment of swordplay, duels, and killing leaves me saddened and unimpressed. The reader has constantly to remind himself that this is fiction, and that the author is taking incredible liberties with his subject matter. Skewered heroes are simply brushed offstage to be replaced by more cannon fodder, very much in the tradition of the "men in red shirts" in the original "Star Trek" series... Further, all the loose ends seem to tie themselves up nicely; none of the typical vicissitudes of daily living seem to visit themselves upon these star-charmed warriors: if they fight against greatly superior odds, they nevertheless emerge victorious, if slightly sweaty... The initial clash between D'Artagnan and one of the Cardinal's champions ends badly for the latter: skewered by D'Artagnan. (What else? - same old routine.) Are we really to believe that there is so little substance and skill to swordsmanship that a tyro can overmaster a master? I find it inconceivable.. But of course D'Artagnan goes on to repeat this performance... Dumas' work is very much a product of that same wild unrealistic romanticism of the mid-to-late 19th century that gave us Wagner's Ring Cycle. But having said all that, I did enjoy reading the book despite its obvious stylistic and conceptual shortcomings. It IS good fun, and very hard indeed to put down. Like a batman movie, the action borders on the ridiculous, but it's all in good fun, and so we allow ourselves to be carried along by the author in the grand farce of the story. Does it hold up to multiple readings? I've never wanted to reread it, but have occasionally pulled it off the shelf to drink in the flavor...
Rating: Summary: Life changing - view changing, an exciting adventure! Review: This book and all of Dumas-pere's books changed my view of the world and reenforced my love of the history of Europe. It enhanced my world and my travels and influenced my decorating choices. I cannot think of another writer who influenced me as much as Dumas-pere, he touched my heart with his characters and stories. See the movies to get a feel for the clothes & the furnishings, the settings, but read the books for TRUE ADVENTURE!
Rating: Summary: I DARE YOU TO READ THIS BOOK AND NOT GET HOOKED ON DUMAS Review: This is by far one of the best (if not the best) books ever written. The First in a Series of Five (The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Viscount of Bragelonne, Louise de la Vallere, and The Man in the Iron Mask) Dumas does an incredible job of bringing you into his world of Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D'Artangan. Good for all ages and great for the adventerous. This book is a page turner. Certainly the best in the series. I highly recommend this book to anyone who dares to get hooked on Dumas.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: Nothing quite like it. One of the greatest tales of intrigue and romance. Terrific pacing, character study and dialogue. More action packed than "Monte Cristo". A must read.
