Summary: Bravo!
Review: Because I spend a lot of time in my vehicle with my kids, I have begun seeking out these audio adaptations of classic novels put out by Monterey Soundworks...I currently had the pleasure of listening to The Three Musketeers and was very impressed. Usually an adaptation of this great story only covers the first adventure, which is only the "tip of the iceburg". These audio tapes are of excellent quality and do a fine job of bringing the complete story to life! Milady is one of the greatest villainess' in all literature and this adaptation has finally done her character justice! This was much better than any movie I've seen. I consider myself a "musketeer afficionado" as I have read the complete series...Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D'Artagnan are very close friends of mine! If you love this story, you will also love "20 Years Later"! Read them all the way through "The Man in the Iron Mask"!

If you are already a fan, get these audio tapes...you won't be disappointed! They are also a good vehicle to introduce someone who may be intimidated by the heft of the book to familiarize themselves with the story and develop an attachment to the characters, which is very easy to do with these characters!

Summary: better than all the films
Review: THere is a reason that classics are regarded as classics: they are timeless and very fun to read, often more fun than you would imagine. THis is a long book, 900 pages in the French version, but I sliced through so fast that I was sorry when it ended.

The plot outline is simple. The four musketeers - for there really are four - want to help the queen in her love for Lord Buckingham of England. All the rest is intrigue and adventure related to that. But the episodes are so funny, the chemistry between the characters so subtle and realistic, that it makes for a truly great read. Indeed, the characters of the musketeers are so well drawn, their inter-relations so complex, that a film or even a miniseries simply cannot do it justice. The glimpses at historical personnages is also fascinating, from Richelieu to Louis XIII. Finally, you get a flavor for the Paris of that epoch, just after the religious wars.

Highly recommended.

Summary: The Three Musketeers
Review: ¡§One for all and all for one!¡¨ said D¡¦Artagnan, an honorable musketeer. The book written by Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers, is a story loved by readers of any age. The Three Musketeers, with its 18th century heroic, historical background, is a fascinating tale of adventure and romance. The novel illustrates the struggles and evil schemes of the time. D¡¦Artagnan, who teams up with the three musketeers- Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, use their strength as well as their strong friendship to save the Queen¡¦s honor and defeat the malicious plans of the powerful Cardinal Richelieu.
This book is influenced by Romanticism, which depicts a view of the society colored by nationalism and heroics. Alexandre Dumas¡¦ elegant style of writing illustrated a palpable picture of French society. The book demonstrates the luxurious lifestyle of monarchs and religious leaders. The royal family had magnificent jewelry and threw a lot of parties. And of course, a story about Musketeers, or the elite guard of the king, must have plenty of sword fighting. The novel is full of duels, kidnappings and intrigue. There is never a dull moment.
The book also has a complex drama of love and fame, which makes every word of the book interesting and exciting to read. D¡¦Artagnan loves and is loved by many women throughout the course of the book, but his suave swordsmanship rarely shows through in his romantic endeavors. The book moreover illustrates the abuse of religious power at the time; the Cardinal holds a strong spiritual power that equals the king¡¦s power. The Cardinal uses his power to eliminate people who displease him. The book is full of emotion, and the complex story-line gives a lesson on friendship and teamwork. If the three musketeers did not help D¡¦Artagnan, he would have been murdered by the Cardinal. D¡¦Artagnan accomplishes all of his missions with the help of his friends.

Summary: totally satisfying and just plain fun
Review: THere is a reason that most classics are regarded as classics: they are timeless and very fun to read, often far more interesting fun than you would imagine. THis is a long book, 900 pages in the French version, but I sliced through so fast that I was sorry when it ended.

The glimpses at historical personnages is also fascinating, from Richelieu to Louis XIII. Finally, you get a flavor for the Paris of that epoch, with the rumbling of the religious wars in the background. But this is not a dark book, Like the Reine Margot: it is a great frolic of brotherhood and good guys and bad guys. Taken for what it is, it is one of the greatest.

Highly recommended.

Summary: The Three Musketeers
Review: The Three Musketeers is a classic story of love and deceit. The story focuses around the journeys of D'Artagnan, in his quest to become a member of the King's elite guard unit, the Musketeers. Many of these journeys end up in life or death situations, and the young Gascon must rely heavily on the companionship of his three Musketeer friends, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, for survival. The plot contains many twists, and several of the characters are not who they appear to be. Even though the book is fairly long, it always kept me hooked with its adventurous plot and action filled fight scenes. If you enjoy a great tale of love, companionship, deceit, and betrayal, and have some time on your hands, this book is a must read.

Summary: Best book ever written
Review: Being only an eigth grader and a thirteen year old, you may think I don't have very much experience with books. However, I have read The Three Musketeers, and I can easily say, it is the best book ever written. It is witty with 18th century humor. It has fencing, fighting, romance, betrayl, action, seduction, death, hatred, true love, and so much more. It is filled with creativity, and Alexandre Dumas has a wonderful style of writing that really lets him connect to the reader.

D'Artagan is a young Gason boy who wants to become a Musketeer. It follows him and his adventures with his three friends and fellow musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. The journeys that the four of them take together are unforgettable. This book is a must read. It is hard to get into at first, but once you start reading, at least twenty pages, you have to finish.

Summary: A very good classic
Review: The Three Musketeers is really a pretty good book and worth reading. The musketeers are Athos, Porthos and Aramis, but there is also another character which is almost more the focus of the novel. This is D'artagnan, a young man who first comes to blows with each of the Musketeers, but then becomes good friends with each of them.

I'd say the first half of this novel seems a little less focused than the first. I don't know if it was just me, but I found I kept getting confused about what exactly what was happening and how various events were related. The second half seems much more clear and is certainly very entertaining.

Dumas gives each of the characters a distinct personality and although the musketeers often seem mysterious, there's still a sense of understanding their motivation and concerns. Each is a brave gentleman in service of their country, enjoying their adventures and journeys.

I'd say this is really a good book and definitely worth reading if you're interested.

Summary: 17th Century France comes alive
Review: The Three (or more rightly, Four) Musketeers are now high among my list of all time favorite books. Why is this? It is because of the undermining tension between the forces of good and evil, the passion of true love, and the high adventure of the Musketeers. The story is based upon young D'Artagnan's quest to become a musketeer and seek fame and fortune. The novel follows a time in European history where religious and civil strife is everywhere, and The Musketeers must battle to save France and their own purses! There are moments of hilarity, sadness, passion, and a surprise ending thrown in for good measure. The way Dumas was able to twist the plot in so many directions was a marvel to me. I guarantee you will not be disappointed after reading this book; the characters will come alive and the drama will unfold.

Summary: Good Book If You Like Adventure.
Review: The Three Musketeers is about a boy around 20 years of age named D'Artagnan who travels to France to become a Musketeer. He then encounters three important characters named Porthos, Aramis, and Athos. He arranges a duel with each of them and then realizes that they are all Musketeers. Soon the Cardinal's guards arrive to fight with the Musketeers. D'Artagnan fights with the Musketeers and defeats the leader of the Cardinal's guards that attacked the Musketeers. After this he makes a name for himself to the King, Cardinal, and the leader of the Musketeers, M. de Treville. He makes friends with Porthos, Aramis, and Athos. He soon gets involved in a plot against the Queen set up by the Cardinal, and D'Artangnan is the only one who can save the Queen from her predicament. In the process he also becomes deeply involved with one of the Queen's servants. The characters were exellent and their personalities fit together perfectly. Dumas combines action, comedy, and romance into one well written novel. Altough it was fairly wordy, the plot was good and kept me interested throughout the book. The characters are portrayed very well in the book; there's the treachorous Milady, who is completely nuts. D'artagnan who is just an all-around hero. He has brains, and skill, and anything he lacks he makes up for with pure bravado and determination. Athos, who was a wise and sad character, and the most excellent leader. Aramis, was an interesting cross between religion and swashbucklery, while Porthos could not be funnier. I also enjoyed the way the mood of the story could change from moment to moment. Lightheartedness at the beginning when D'Artagnan meets the Three Musketeers. Suspense at the capture of M. Bonacioux. As well as pride, whenever the heroes cry out the well remembered "One for all, and all for one." Overall I think this is a great book and highly recommend others read it.
