Review: Okay, I read this book years ago... Actually, it was required reading for me and my classmates. Why? Because it takes place in my hometown in Illinois. The main idea is that all the adults in the world have died from a strange virus, and kids (about 12 and younger) are forced to carry on with survival. It's not some remote island; it takes place in Chicago's suburbia, so the basic needs can be found and had. The problem is that the gangs have now formed, and they either fight amongst themselves for resources and territory, or form alliances with each other for survival. The main character (Lisa) pretty much the head of one group, and when things turn south for them, she has this idea to move everyone into the old high-school. This old high-school just happens to pretty much be an old castle on top of one of the only hills in the area.

Reading it again as an adult, I do see some flaws, but having read it for the first time in junior-high, I loved the story, and put myself in the main character's shoes. Okay, it helped that I lived there, knew people on Chidester and Elm, knew one of the teachers (Remember she mentions that "Mrs. Moran" wouldn't have given her high marks on her Constitution? That was actually a social-studies teacher at the local junior-high-school.), and eventually graduated from "Glenbard" (okay, it's one of four "Glenbard" schools in the district). I think it's a really good read for that age group, especially for kids who enjoy stories that make them think a bit...

Review: (I had to write a book report on The Girl Who Owned a City, so here it is below):

A plague sweeps the world killing people age 13 and over. Now Lisa, 10 years old and her little brother Toddy-boy, 5 years old, must survive with little food and by fending off violent gangs. Lisa forms a militia containing all the kids that live on Grand Avenue. They prepare defenses and get ready to face some tough gangs.

I know this report isent much of anything but its a basic summary. I read this book when i was 7. I lovd it, it took me only about a week to read, and i dont think i will ever forget the plot or characters, ever. This book is probably better, in my opinion, than the 4 Harry Potter Books. (I cant wait till the movie ^.6) I totally recomend this book from grade 3+. You might think i am crazy, but this is a really creative imaginitive novel. THe violence in the story, hmm... Well it was hard to picture the violence in you mind, boy would i hate to be the chidester gang leader... owwww!

Summary: The Girl Who Owned A City is great!
Review: When everyone over 12 dies, 10-year-old Lisa and her brother Todd are thrust into a world with no adults. Lisa is very resourceful, and finds many places to get food. However, there is a gang that is determined to steal everything she has from her. So she organizes a militia of Grand Avenue (her street) and they start learning how to defend themselves. When Grand Avenue fails, Lisa finds another location that would be like a fortress. They start a city there, and soon the population is over 500. But when the same gang is able to conquer Glenbard, Lisa has to find a way to get it back. This is an excellent story. I got it in July and have read it about twelve times. I never get tired of it. It's exciting, although scary, to think about what would happen if a plauge really happened, and we children had to survive. This book is a great read.

Review: My mom got this book for me at a used book sale. She just happened to pick it up and read it. For a while I just let it lay there on the shelf. When I finaly picked this book up and started to read it, I couldn't stop. The Girl Who Owned A City is maybe one of the best books I have ever happened to come accross.
Since then, I have forced my teachers, mother, friends, GRANDMOTHER even, to read this book. I have just recently ordered another copy for an adult penpal to read.
The Girl Who Owned A City has everything you want in a book. Adventure, danger, excitement, daring, trust, friendship, fear, family, hope, happiness, sorrow, disbelief.....everything!
A dramatic illness sweeps the world, sparing no adult or person over 13. Lisa is 10, and a survivor. Imagine a world without adults. Some's immediate reaction is "Cool! No parents! All riiiiiiiiiiight!!!" But if you really think about it...no electricity, no running water, no cars, no noise, no protection, no school, no factories, no food, no...anything. This story follows Lisa, as she forbids to be trodden down by this horrific tragedy. Lisa (along with her brother Todd) organise the neighborhood into a community once more, fighting for everything they have left in the world...each other. But evil is still out there, grabbing and stealing...will Lisa and her followers survive?

Summary: Kids as Leaders
Review: The Girl Who Owned A City is a good book. I have some likes and dislikes however. I did like that the people in the book are very adult. You have to remember that all of the people died over the age of 12 because a virus swept the earth. A girl named Lisa took over the city. The children all began to know how to take care of each other. I also liked how Lisa punched the commander of another army and beat him up. This showed her courage and leadership. What I didn't like was that it left the reader hanging. I want to know what happened next.

Review: Do you think you could survive in a world with no adults? Every child had to live with that when a deadly virus swept the earth, killing everyone over the age of twelve. In the book, "The Girl Who Owned A City" by O. T. Nelson, life was a struggle for all the survivors. Especially when it came to finding food and providing it for siblings, friends and neighbors.
Lisa, a ten year old survivor, is very brave and determind. She lets no kind of obstacle get in her way to reach her goal. Which is to find food and supplies, medicine and First Aid,and to help herself and her brother Todd survive.
This story takes place in a city, in a particular neighborhood. Lisa feels that it isn't safe for the children to be unprotected in their homes, while there are gangs roaming the streets at night, even in the day. Lisa wants to protect her brother Todd and her friends such as Craig, so she helps build the neighborhood militia.
When this militia doesn't help protect the neighborhood she comes up with a plan to build a city...Glenbard. The old deserted high school was transformed into a city when Lisa took charge. But, are Lisa, Todd and the city safe from the gangs?...
Many don't think that there are any weak points in the book, since there are many strong points! For example, there is an enormous amount of sensory images and visualization. The author creates a way for you to connect with the characters which allows you to draw conclusions about them. There is also a lot of details which create suspense throughout the story.
The message many think the author is trying to get across, is that you can do anything you put your mind to. Even if it means living in a world with no adults.
We would reccomend this book to anyone between the ages of 9-13. Whether you're a boy or a girl, this book can be read by anyone. Strictly because it is so intersting, and it sets an example, and it encourages kids as well as adults.

Summary: Tough Kids
Review: The Girl Who Owned A City is a story of tough kids. First Lisa thinks of having a militia. Then the militia was built with alot of kids joining. Lisa and the other kids thought it was a good idea to have a militia because they wants to have their rights to live. Then more and more militias started to build. I think the best part of the book was when Tom Logan tricked Lisa into believing that he was her friend. i don't know what happened at the end, but I do hope to see a sequal to the book The Girl Who Owned A City.

Review: Lisa wanted to make her own city when all of the people over the age of 12 died. She wanted to make her owne miliia and she
did. When Lisa made the militia and got the school, everyone helped get the school the way she wanted it. After they got going, Lisa got shot in the butt, but that did not stop her from getting back at her enemy,Tom Logan. She eventually worked her way back to a leadership role. The book left the reader wondering what would happen next.

Summary: Lisa's Big Step
Review: The Girl Who Owned a City is a really good book. However, I bet a lot of people want to know what happened to the bodies. Well, that's a question only the author would know. My class would like to see a sequel to The Girl Who Owned a City. I think the best part of the book was when Lisa stepped up and knew that she had to save herself and others from dying. What impressed me the most was when the kids learned how to drive and took food to survive. I think that every kid that reads this book would get so in to it and learn how it feels to be out in the real world. I think it's really good when the kids use their wits to steal stuff for themselves to be able to feed and keep themselves in a safe house.
