Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: This book was an incredible story of finding the path towards one's personal identity. Though I am not Indian-American, I am Colombian-American and so found certain portions of the story to be exceptionally accurate depictions of my own feelings as a teenager. Hidier provided a vivid story that presented serious issues confronted by young people in the United States and at the same time she was able to maintain a certain amount of comedy and reality throughout the book. This is a terrific read!!
Rating: Summary: AMAZING!!!!!!!! Review: What an amazing book. I was amazed as I read this book, at how much of myself I saw in Dimple. It is definitely a must-read for any ABCD...this book is truly a masterpiece of the emotions, and and accurate description of what a second generation Indian girl feels growing up in a traditional household in America. This is easily one of the best books I have ever had the privilege of reading.
Rating: Summary: Sort of confusing, but otherwise a good book. Review: I am 12 and in the 7th grade, this book was confusing in various parts that involved Dimple's metaphorical perception of her life. However, the book got increasingly better as it progressed. I thought Gwyn was a bit of a snob and a bad influence on Dimple, and Karsh turned out to be quite a character. All in all, Born Confused was a very interesting book to read.
Rating: Summary: Sort of confusing, but otherwise a good book. Review: I am 13 and in the 8th grade, this book was confusing in various parts that involved Dimple's metaphorical perception of her life. However, the book got increasingly better as it progressed. I thought Gwyn was a bit of a snob and a bad influence on Dimple, and Karsh turned out to be quite a character. All in all, Born Confused was a very interesting book to read.
Rating: Summary: Thought Provoking Review: In reading other reviews of this book, I came to the realization that most of the negative reviewers did not take the time to explore this author and her intentions with this novel. That being said, Born Confused is a completely thought provoking and entertaining glimpse into the life of a teenage girl. It is a coming of age novel that addresses the deepest fears of most teenage girls in a manner that provides a safe haven for the exploration of those fears. I don't believe that any one of us is ever 100% comfortable in our own skin and certain that the choices we make are the "right" ones. Hidier keeps her heroine "real" for the enviornment in which the story is set and the novel is proof itself that one does not have to have a "tragic" event in order for the novel to be a success.
Rating: Summary: Not that Simple Review: I am a Indian girl born in the West. I found this book completely uninteresting, and it does not accurately portray the Indian - Western experience at all. Many of the problems faced by the protagonist, Dimple, are indeed problems that many Indian teenagers have to face, but I think that the problems are a lot more complex than what she portrayed, but at the same time, its not completely bad. It seemed to me that all the encounters with the Indian culture were in her eyes negative, and she came across as a self centered and just plain stupid. I disliked this book greatly, and I would most certainly not recommend it to any Desi, or other teenage girl for that matter. Its not worth the paper it was printed on. STAY AWAY!
Rating: Summary: Boring Review: This book was a complete disapointment. It was boring and childish, and sometimes very confusing. Although I find that I am able to relate somewhat to the protagonist Dimple, I must stay that the author was unable to make me care about Dimple or any other character for that matter.Dimple, in my opinion, was stupid, and could not think for herself and very pathetic at times.I most certainly DO NOT recommend this book to anyone who wants to be entertained. This book does not even deserve one star.
Rating: Summary: BookWorm Review: I just finished this book. In the beginning of the book I was hooked, but then somewhere in the middle of it, I lost interest.
Rating: Summary: Not confusing at all Review: I really got into this book for several reasons. The Indian Culture is interesting and you'll love Dimple Lala's take on it, and American culture. Dimple is a girl who doesn't know where she fits in; she wants to be normal and white, like her best friend, and the irony is, her best friend wants to be Indian and have a culture! The tone and writing style flows well because of the modern teen perspective. All in all, this story has romance, humour, identity, confusion, and art. I highly urge you to pick up a copy and read it.
Rating: Summary: BrAvO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I think this book was amazing!!!!! I saw the book being featured in a magazine and i never thought of reading it, WRONG!!! I saw it again in my high school library and i just couldn't get enough. Even though it's long, it teaches you many lessons. I, as a Mexican-American understood the position Dimple had. I was just passing thought that phase. This book teached me stuff that I'm really lucky to still have in my memory. It's so inspiring. This book is just as my life(but in Mexican way). I totally recommed it to anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
