Summary: One of the BEST books
Review: I read this book for a big literature project, and I absolutely LOVED it. It was written in a manner that was easy for me to understand, and one that was appealing to readers of my age (12-15). I really liked how the characters seemed to come to life before my eyes. Often, as I was reading this, I found myself grieving over the troubled characters! Being of Indian descent, and living in America, there were many situations that I could relate to. I would recommend this book to ANYONE looking for an EXCELLENT book to read. It might be difficult to understand for non-Indians at some times, but for the most part, I feel that every reader will benefit from reading this book! Great Book once again! Congrats to Tanuja Desai Hidier for an OUTSTANDING piece of literature!

Summary: Anything But Confused
Review: This is maybe one of the best books I've ever read. It's a honest tale about a rebellious teen trying to break away from her parents traditions. I love the way this book relates so much to what happens in real life and its honesty about it. Also, the character development is amazing. It's something every teenager, Indian or non, should read- most likely, they're in the same postion as Dimple! So if you havent read it, READ IT NOW!

Summary: Blew me away
Review: Wow wow wow. That's all I can say about this book. I started reading it sometime last week and just finished it today. And the moment I put it down I thought, I have to read this again. The book is basically about an Indian-American girl named Dimple Lala who doesn't feel Indian enough but also doesn't feel American enough. She goes through a wild, entertaining summer which changes her life. I really feel like I got to know all of the characters in this book, Dimple, her best friend, her parents, everyone. And the writing was so enchanting. A must read for everyone. I'd give it six stars if I could.

Summary: GREAT BOOK
Review: I recently read this book and found it absolutely wonderful. Don't be discouraged by its size, I read it in less than two weeks - I couldn't put it down. It's about a sixteen-year-old Indian girl growing up in New Jersey. It takes place in one summer, the summer when she finds herself, because as it says, she was born confused. Every pre-teen or teenage girl will love this book. I hope to see more books by Tanuja Desai Hidier. The book not only has a great story and characters, but it also is written beautifully.

Summary: Charming
Review: I'm stunned to see so many people slamming this book. I thought it had a great deal of charisma! Many of its passages were so sensitively written for a YA novel, particularly the parts concerning Dimple's first impressions of New York. There was a lot that was strikingly beautiful.

As a non-Indian, I enjoyed the glimpse into this culture, especially the scene where they sanctified Dimple's cousin's dorm room by lighting incense and carrying around Ganesha. It was something I'd like to try sometime! Overall, I thought this book to be an inspiration both in terms of my own writing & in terms of the ugly-duckling theme.

I would recommend it unreservedly to anyone regardless of age.

Summary: four hours of my life that i can't get back
Review: I was stunned to see all of the positive reviews this book received and had to add in my viewpoint. This was the worst book I've read in quite some time. The depictions of Dimple and her parents were stereotypical and caricatured. While as a 2nd generation Indian woman I can definitely attest to the fact that it is enlightening for a teenage Indian girl to realize that there are others with similar experiences out there, those experiences aren't as simple as this book makes them out to be. Not all Indian parents want their daughters to hook up with a nice Indian boy out of high school, and growth in a family occurs slowly and painfully, not in the sitcom-esque way portrayed in the book (where, by the end, Dimple of course now understands her parents' viewpoints). I also found the book kind of brainwashing, advocating exploration of one's identity as an Indian woman only if done within the constraints set by one's parents or community. Does anyone out there agree with me??

Summary: Helped me be a little less conflicted...
Review: This book was excellent. It's the first one I've read where the main character was an American girl of Indian descent. Just that simple fact was cool, b/c I never see characters "like me" on TV, or the movies, or in books. The characters are multi-dimensional, the writing is excellent. I would love to read a sequel to find out what happens to Dimple as she goes to college, etc. The book was better than therapy - made me feel less bad about not being "Indian enough". I wish I had read it as a teenager...

Summary: a very good read
Review: As an Indian girl born in the U.S., I really enjoyed reading this as a novel. However, I found the book a bit unrealistic (which is ok) but I thorougly enjoyed reading the witticisms about Indian life and culture. Dimple is fairly believeable, but some of the characters she meets aren't. All in all, definitely worth reading, at least for the laughs.

Summary: Born Confused
Review: This book, is a really good book, about an Indian Girl, trying to find meaning in America. Although she was born in America, and really does not seem to like her Indian heritage, Dimple is really confused about her Identity. What also doesn;t help is that her best friend Gwen, is absolutely gorgeous, and seems to be slipping away from her. Everything changes when Dimple meets a boy is the son of her parents friends and then her whole world falls upside down. This book is a really good portrayal of accepting ones culture, and who they are. it is really good, and i would recommend it to anyone who likes reading.

Summary: boring cliched predicatable cheesy
Review: BAD BOOK! i started reading it, but got so annoyed by the authors cheesy and predicatable style of writing that i stopped. If you are in highschool and would like a good book to read that has cultural struggles,i suggest White Teeth by Zadie Smith!!!!
