Summary: Best Football/Life Book
Review: Crash is the best book I have ever read, and anyone who reads it will love it. Crash is about a boy around 13 years old. He is a great running back who gets a little cocky. Crash changes from being a tough guy with a big ego, to the nicest guy you will ever meet. The change occurs when Crash is at a dance and gets in a little fight because a girl won't dance with him. His worst enemy, his neighbor, tells him to leave her alone. He ends up understanding that even though his neighbor is a geek he is still a nice person really, and he becomes his best friend. Crash teaches you that if you are popular and think you're better than everyone your wrong and that anyone can be your friend.

This book is about a boy named Crash, who has a lesson to learn about having a big ego. He ends up changing from a tough guy who thinks he is better than anyone to a person who can get along with anyone. I definately recommend this book for all ages. You might find that you relate to this book.

Summary: A Fairly Good Tale
Review: We took this book on a recent long train ride -- a good place for non-readers to read! My 10 year old found this book a little boring for the first few chapters, but then liked it a lot.

The narrator, Crash, is a jock. He tells us his story of life in Pennsylvania, with an irritatingly friendly dorky neighbor, Penn. They meet in first grade, and although Penn tries to be a good buddy, Crash spends most of his time avoiding or making fun of this skinny, odd boy with second hand store clothing, a pet turtle, strange eating habits (no meat???), ancient parents and no toys. Penn isn't bothered by any of this, nor by Crash's love of tackle football, designer clothing and social status.

Over the years (we stay with them through 7th grade) Crash finds a cool friend, Mike, who really likes tormenting Penn. Penn never resists, and refuses to fight back for he is a Quaker. Crash loves his granddad, Scooter, who moves in with the family and comes to Crash's games (his parents are too busy working to provide the family with all the things the family 'needs') -- Penn has a great great grandfather who means a lot to him. That seems to be about all the two boys have in common, other than the ability to run faster than any other kids in their class.

When the Penn Relay brings Penn's 80-something year old great grandfather to town, Crash finds himself in the surprising situation of wondering if he should help Penn win a place in the race, or if he should just leave him in the dust and take the place in the race himself (as he knows he can.)

Penn's Quaker beliefs, other than his niceness and refusal to fight, are not covered, leaving the uninformed reader to think that Quakers are about being passive, not eating meat, wearing old clothes and refusing to defend oneself -- of course, all that may be true, but not of all Quakers!

Anyway, this is really the story of Crash and how he slowly comes to truly see Penn, Mike -- and even himself - as the people they are. We enjoyed reading it -- my son (who is not a vegetarian, and says he hasn't decided yet if he's a Quaker) rooted for Crash and laughed at some of the mean jokes at first, but eventually explained to me why Crash had changed at the end.

You'll need to read this yourself to find and discuss your own reasons why!

Summary: Good book with a meaningful message
Review: This book was mostly about Crash, Mike, and Penn. Crash and Penn had met in first grade, when Penn moved to Crash's neighborhood. They became enemies. Mike moved across the street from Crash when they were in sixth grade. They became best friends instantly. They are both football players, while Penn is a cheerleader. They make fun of him, and pull pranks on him constantly. As the book goes on, Crash's heart changes, and he begins to feel differently--less hostile--towards Penn. It's a really good book, and the story is really touching. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those in middle school.

Review: I thought the book Crash was very interesting. I liked it because Crash is a football player and I like sports. Crash is a very skilled football player he broke a school record for most touchdowns. Another reason that I like the book is because Crash is close to grandfather. Summary: Crash; Sports book with Personality
Review: "Crash" is the story of John Coogan (a young football star) going through his teen years. Ever since John was little he had been called Crash because he loved football and everything about it. Crash grew up in Pennsylvania with everything he wanted. Many changes occur throughout the book and Crash finds himself a brand new person. Crash and his best friend, Mike Deluca, torture another boy their age, named Penn Webb. Penn is the perfect victim, he's scrawny, too polite, and he refuses to do anything back to you! Jane Forbes moves to town and Crash falls for her right away. Jane and Penn become really good friends and while Crash keeps making fun of Penn, Jane gets annoyed by Crash and won't talk to him. A family tragedy occurs and Crash sees that his life has totally changed around. He gets things from "second hand" stores and he has to give up a lot of things that are important to him. Crash's mother stays at home and he hardly ever sees his father. Crash begins to feel different about his friends and Penn. He makes a very hard decision while in a run-off during track season. Soon after, things begin to change between Crash, Penn, and Jane. "Crash" is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone that loves sports and books with teen struggle. Crash shows heart, consideration, determination, and loyalty in every way possible. This book is amazing!!!

Summary: How well can you get into a book?
Review: I can never find myself to fall into a book and want to read it. I have never really enjoyed a book or wanted to read one. I often find that I have to force myself to read or get into a book. I started reading Crash and right from the beginning I got into it. It started with a hillarious recall back to age 6. With Crash I could get into the book and understand it right from the first chapter. Crash has always been your "most popular" kind of guy. He is always bullying kids and always gets aways with it. I couldn't really relate to the character of Crash because I have never found myself to bully people around. When the book introduces a boy, Penn, my age that Crash always teases and messes around with I find myself to really undersatand and relate to Penn. Things in the book change and it takes a little twist. I loved this book and I think that any kids or adults would like this book. It has a great theme and almost anybody can relate to the characters in the book.
