Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: If you liked the Pirates of the Carribbean movie, you'll probably like this book. Although it does lack Johnny Depp *sigh* it has a lot of the same elements, like the fact that the pirates are portrayed as indiviaduals, so everyone has a different personality, not just as yo-ho-ing guys who have eye patches and peg legs. The female characters are really strong, not just the maiden-in-distress kind of usual character. If you're obsessed with pirates, read this-you won't be disapointed!
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: Nancy and her former slave Minerva flee from their home to join a pirate ship. For Nancy it is an escape from an imprisoning marriage and Minerva wants to be free from slavery. But the plan fails when the man Nancy was suppose to marry is pursuing them. Nancy wonders how he is able to track them down; is the ruby necklace he gave her really cursed? Or are their traitors among them?
I enjoyed reading this book because the plot was complicated and not easy to guess the out come.
Rating: Summary: Outlook of a Female Pirate Review: Nancy Kington is an English teenager living in Manchester at the early stages of the eighteenth century. While most girls her age are forced to sit around doing needlepoint, Nancy manages to perceive much more then the tedious life expected for her. Her father is wealthy, owning a sugar-cane plantation in Jamaica. Being as she is the youngest, and also the only girl in the household, Nancy is either bullied or ignored with a seldom loving remark from her siblings; all older boys. Nancy's father is gone to Jamaica for a portion of the year as well as traveling the globe, and when he is at home, he treats Nancy like an afterthought, permitting her to seek her will. Nancy also has a childhood friend, William, who is a tar, and has consequently evolved into something greater then just a friend, though it is apparent that one day Nancy will be forced to marry someone against her will for the benefit of the family's wealth. With this depressing information told in flashback by Nancy, Nancy's true adventures really begin after her father's demise. As her father's will states, Nancy is sent to Jamaica to be in command of her own sugar-cane plantation, while her brothers receive greater and more immense wealths. It is when Nancy reaches Jamaica, that her innocence of the plantations is lost, as Nancy seeks sight to graphic and horrific views of slaves, and their treatment. Nancy also befriends a slave by the name of Minerva before meeting a malicious Brazilian courtier who hands Nancy a blood-red ruby necklace. On the return from her visit, Minerva and Nancy are met with a horrific situation that is solved with much bloodshed; from here the climax arises, and Minerva and Nancy explore the roguish and completely unfeminine life of pirates. Though this story was interesting, I feel that it was about one-hundred pages too long, and the ending was cut off too abruptly. Other than those factors, the story was immensely absorbing, and the originality of the story's idea kept me captivated every moment until the end.

Rating: Summary: Pirates! Review: Pirates! is a brilliantly crafted novel by Celia Rees. It is suspenseful to the bitter end, written from the view of Nancy, a wealthy plantation owner's daughter. It is the story of two girls bent upon eluding both fate and tradition.
Nancy lives happily in England-her largest worries are about her sweetheart, William-when suddenly her father dies and she is left to the care of her cruel, greedy brothers who tell her nothing. She is shipped to Jamaica, where her late father's plantation dwells, and only upon arriving notified that she is now the owner. There she realizes the brutal treatment of the slaves and by the same turn befriends the slave Minerva. But another sudden turn of events requires that she and Minerva flee the plantation. From there, they board the pirate ship Deliverance. Both girls are determined to escape what fate says they must become-Nancy, married to an evil man and Minerva, sold and enslaved yet again. But can they survive the perilous life of pirates-who steal and kill until the day they are stolen from and killed in turn?
Amazing crafting, an adventurous, spine-chilling plot, and two strong heroines make this book a must on any shelf.
Rating: Summary: 4 and a Half Stars.... Review: Pirates! How often do you see books with that title? Of that time period? And what more--women pirates? I find the very idea fascinating and it shouts out adventure. This book talks a lot about that time, mixing in magic, romance, and important issues, such as slavery. It's not a fantastic out-of-this-world novel meant to stay around with us for decades, but it's worth reading for enjoyment. I DID enjoy it very much with all the thrilling moments I endured, the constant foreboding and foreshadowing, the happiness, the sadness... I HIGHLY recommend this book and also other books by Celia Ress such as "Witch Child" (phenomenal) and "Sorceress" (its fabulous sequel). All of her books are cleverly crafted and definitely a treasure.
Rating: Summary: Pirates! by Celia Rees Review: Say you're a wealthy merchant's daughter, and then your father dies. You're taken to your father's old sugar plantation where you are forced into marriage. What do you do? Run away and become a pirate of course! This is exactly what Nancy Kington does in the novel Pirates! by Celia Rees . When Nancy runs away with a slave girl, she is leaving her old life behind. But why is she leaving it? Well, Nancy is fleeing from an arranged marriage that she has been forced into, and Minerva, the slave girl and Nancy's friend, is fleeing from the overseer at the plantation. The two girls become pirates to escape their past lives, and they travel throughout the seas, dressed like men. As pirates the two young women are forced to survive storms, captures, and revolts. All through the story, the Brazilian, who is the man Nancy was supposed to marry, is following Nancy day and night. He is mysteriously connected to a ruby necklace and a pair of ruby earring that are in Nancy's possession. Nancy receives terrifying dreams throughout the story in which the Brazilian says that he is coming for her. While running from the Brazilian, Nancy is also looking for William, her long lost childhood love, while trying to live life as a pirate. Unfortunately, William is in the British Navy, and he is hunting and killing pirates just like Nancy. As Nancy goes through all of this, she and Minerva build a strong bond together that proves to be invaluable. I won't reveal the end of the story, but all of the events build up to an amazing and surprising conclusion. Celia Rees is an excellent writer, known for some of her previous novels, such as Witch Child and Sorceress. Pirates! is just as good as the aforementioned books. The story is filled with excitement, adventure, fear, sadness, happiness, friendship, love, and so much more! I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Read up me hearties, yo ho! Review: Taking place in the 1700's, this is the story of Nancy Kington and Minierva Sharpe who are forced to run away from the Kington's Jamaican plantation, after killing a man in self defence. They first travel to a secret community hidden in rural Jamaica. The pirates arrive and Nancy and Minerva join them dressed as men. Amid mutinies, battles, and run-ins with the navy, a strange ship is chasing them! Who are they and what will they do when they catch the pirates? I liked the never ending action and suspence in Pirates! . There was never a dull moment. I'd have to say that even though the language was sometimes hard to understand it fit the time and place of the story perfectly and helped to set the stage. If you enjoy english history, want to learn more about life at sea, or just plain old love pirate tales, then this is the book for you.
