Summary: Reader in Lancaster
Review: I enjoyed this book a lot. I recomend this book to any girl who enjoys reading about about courageous girls. Some people might not like all the gruesome details. I thought that the book length was approprite for the story. I never wanted it to end. (Skip next line which suggests ending to book) I think Celia Rees should write a sequel of the book so I can find out if Nancy ever finds William, but I kind of think this book ended a little to quickly.

Summary: Pirates! (of the Caribbean?)
Review: I have to say that I did love Pirates!, and that I couldn't put it down. It had a lot of suspense, action, and I kept wanting more. The characters were great and the story was well written.
My only complaint? Pirates! is a lot like the Disney movie, The Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl. Nancy is an upper-class white girl who is fascinated with pirates, has a determined, feisty personality, recieves jewelry that is evil, runs away to avoid marriage with a rich guy, and her love interest's name is William. I even kept thinking that Nancy's name was Elizabeth, the character from the Disney movie. Also, Nancy travels with a band of pirates and is chased by an evil man who has a connection with the jewelry he gave her. Sound familiar? Though there are also some differences between the movie and book, I'm surprised that Disney didn't sue the pants off the author for copyright infringement, or vice versa.
All in all, I did enjoy the book very much, but I was just disappointed that the plot didn't seem original enough.

Summary: Pirates
Review: i loved the book Pirates!!! Celia Rees is a awsome writer, loved all her books- witch child, and sorceress. i recommend this book to anyone!! I already have told all my friens about it.
now i am suddenly into learning about pirates, and trying to find some real girls who lived the life of a man.(like Anne Bonny and Mary Read) You know when the writer is fantastic when you suddenly get lost in the book, and it feels like you're really there. EX: you are Standing on the deck of Deliverence next to Nancy and minerva , feeling the salty water spray your face. The excitment when they're about to attack a ship, and saddness when ever something goes wrong. Celia Rees has the ability to do that, to take you into a world where pirates roam the waters and dreams, even dangerous, unexpected, and adventous dreams always come true.

Summary: A Review of Pirates!
Review: I loved this book! Pirates! is the story of Nancy Kington and Minerva Sharpe. Nancy Kington is the daughter of an English merchant who also owns a plantation in the Caribbean. When she's about 10, her childhood sweetheart, William, becomes a cabin boy on a slave ship. Also at this time, her father remarries and Mrs. Wilkes, her new stepmother tries to turn her into a lady. The book skips to when she is 14 and William, now 16 and working his way up the ladder, comes back for a visit. Nancy gives him money owed to him by the captain of her father's ship and he leaves to go to join the navy. When she's about 15, her stepmother arranges a trip to Bath to try and find a suitable husband for Nancy. Nancy meets up with William again and they promise to marry each other and they exchange rings. When they return to England, there is a hurricane and most of her father's ships are destroyed and it leaves him close to bankruptcy. Her father will not allow her to marry William either. Nancy is incredibly naive and doesn't make any connections to "doing her part for the family", and the mysterious Brazilian, (he is known as the Brazilian till later in the story) Shortly after this, her father dies. Her brothers are trying to figure out how to get out of debt when the Brazilian shows up. His name is revealed to be Bartholome. Nancy still hasn't made the connection about why Bartholome is paying off all their debts. A few weeks later Nancy finds out she's leaving for their Caribbean plantation, of which she is the new owner. At the plantation is where she meets Minerva Sharpe, her slave. Nancy didn't grow up with slavery and tried to make friends with Minerva. Minerva remains distant until she saves Nancy from drowning. On the occasion of her 16th birthday, Nancy is invited to the home of Bartholome. Here he gives her a magnificant ruby necklace and ruby earrings as he asks her to marry him. Nancy is shocked and leaves shortly after. When she gets home, she finds that Minerva's mother Phyllis has been whipped, and the overseer, Duke, has taken Minerva to his home. She shoots Duke and saves Minerva. Minerva, Nancy, and Phyllis escape that night to join the maroons, a community of runaways, outlaws, and pirates. They stay their for many weeks, but Nancy knows Bartholome is tracking her down and will find her. Phyllis urges her to throw away the ruby necklace, but she doesn't. One day, pirates come to the village and Nancy recognizes Broom, the first mate on the ship that brought her to the Caribbean. She and Minerva join him and become pirates. Here they live freely for many months, attacking and raiding merchant ships. Nancy has dreams at night though, or a ship with black sails and Bartholome's voice "I will find you". Nancy still has Williams ring and worries that they will be fire at a navy ship, or that the navy will capture them. After a close call with the navy, learning that Bartholome is tracking them, Minerva revealing that they are sisters, and a meeting with William, (he knows she's a pirate know) they sail to Africa, where they hope to capture a fort filled with gold. The do capture the fort, and free many slaves in the process. There is talk of mutiny from some of the crew of another pirate ship they captured, and the crew is becoming greedy. The mutiny is stopped, and all the pirates involved are marooned. The crew decides to settle down for awhile and lands at an abandoned pirate village in Madagascar. Here they build homes and store their treasure. Minerva is planning to get married to Vincent, one of the loyalist sailors in the crew. Nancy still feels uneasy about Bartholome. In her dreams, she hears his voice "I am coming". He does come. All the crew minus Minerva, who is now pregnant, get on the ship to meet him when he comes. They give up without a fight because Bartholome has Minerva tied to the front of his ship. Nancy is taken to Bartholome. He says he plans to marry her still, but she comes to realize that the knife he is holding is meant to kill her. Minerva comes up behind him and chops his head off. They take over the ship and load all Bartholome's treasure onto their ship. Minerva and Vincent get married and stay in Madagascar. Nancy receives word that William is still in love with her and she goes to England to look for him.
Even though this story was rather long (about 380 pages!) and probably could have been made into 2 books, I still though it was very good and was upset that it ended. Read this book, you won't regret it!

Summary: Pirates!
Review: I picked up this book at the library because it said Pirates on it and I am a total pirate freak. While the Johnny Depp movie is muchmuchmuch better(let's face it, not much can beat POTC), this is a really amazing book. The plot is beautifully written, and I loved how the pirates weren't of the Arrr and eye-patch variety, just like in Pirates of the Carribbean. It's wonderfully written, the characters are beleivable, and the storyline is absolutely amazing. It is definetly one of the best books I have ever read!!!!

Summary: My New Favorite Book
Review: I recieved this book for Christmas. I finished it that night.I couldn't put it down. The characters, especially Nancy and Minerva are human and believable. The story is gripping and the sections about pirate life are very well researched. Every girl should read this story of two unconventional heroines taking their lives into their own hands.

Summary: Adventures you wish you'd had
Review: I recieved this book for Christmas. Started it that morning and finished it at an ungodly hour that night. I could not put it down. A pirate adventure story, but much more thought provoking. Nancy and Minerva are excellent heroines; they act decisively. Every girl should read this book. I'm not going to overanalyze it, because, like any good story, it stands on its own. JUST READ IT!!!!!

Summary: A pirate girl's dream story
Review: I was a wee bit unsure of this book when I first picked it up that it would be too silly and childish, but it really isn't. It shows the hardships of women at that time, and slave life, and what it's really like to live at sea. It's a wonderful read, and the friendship of the two girls is heartwarming. Also, it showed how pirates really were, that they weren't all cut-throats. This is coming from someon who's read a great deal of what pirates were really like during this time. This is a book for any girl who ever dreamed of being a pirate.

Summary: Daring storyline featuring flesh-and-blood characters
Review: I was absolutely impressed by this novel. The two young women who escape Jamaica and become pirates, donning men's dress and fighting as men, are warmly-imagined: one feels almost as if they're in the same room with you as you are reading.
The injustices that are treated in this book: slavery of blacks to whites, and slavery of women to the decisions of men, including and especially their fathers and brothers. You are made to understand how a pirate's life could be liberating.
The tale includes some heavy-hitting scenes of murder; it's not a fantasy-land young adult book. Yet it's not written sensationalistically; in fact, the style is of high literary quality, so much so that while it can appeal to young people, it also was impressive reading for me (I am forty years old).
In addition, there are great sea-action scenes and an informative depiction of the pirate way of life.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone, young or old, man or woman.

Summary: Pirates: No exclamation
Review: I was pretty excited to read this book considering the great reviews but was sadly disappointed. The book is definitely for young adults (11-16 yrs old). I am 22 years old and found this book entertaining OVERALL but terribly slow and dull in many parts. The plot is quite predictable and the points of climax uneventful. Although, I do highly recommend this book for young adults.
