Rating: Summary: Great book but not too factual . . . Review: This was a GREAT story but frankly, the facts from Greek mythology didn't match up with some of Napoli's events. For example, Philoctetes was not the one [who was destined to] kill off Paris! Also, weren't there supposed to be only 5 sirens? And they were supposed to have killed themselves out of anger from not being able to lead the sailors on the Argo to their deaths!Well, let's forget all that for a moment. This was a really nice book - I have long been searching for a book that talks about Sirens/mermaids and here's something like what I have been wanting to read about them all this time! The book began on a sad note with the tragedy of Cecilia! (sniff) And I'd thought that Sirena would keep herself hidden from Philoctetes a lot longer than she did. . . . Oh well, I highly recommend this book to all interested girls (this is definitely not a guy book, they talk way too much about breasts here)! Hope you enyjoy this book!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful, sincere and meaningful Review: I have read many of Ms. Napoli's work and enjoied every minute. In this book, as in others, she captures human love, joy and pain beautifully. The main character, Sirena, becomes a real girl with true and deep feelings. I thind that this is a wonderful book in every sense of the word.
Rating: Summary: read me! Review: Sirena is for you if you're into love stories and Greek mythology. She was cursed to become immortal, but only if she's loved by a human man. This she wants, the true love of a man, but it takes them to their daeth. find out if she stays with her true love Philoctetes,a man, after all.
Rating: Summary: Good book! Review: A school of mermaids were out to get immortality by mating with a human. Their beautiful voices brought the men to the island where they sang. But every time a boat came too near , it sank and all of the men died. Sirena didn't like killing all those men and decided to run away to Lemnos. There she met Philocetetes who had been abandoned by his men because he was bitten by a sea serpent. After a while they fell in love with each other and Sirena got her immortality. Years later the sailors returned to look for Philocetetes to go and help win the Troyan War. So he had to leave Sirena for ever.
Rating: Summary: Sirena is a beautiful book :) Review: This book is the best one I have ever read, by far. it is donna jo napoli's best book! it is very discriptive, and there is something very new and interesting i have only seen this author do. she writes from sirena's point of veiw, and in the present. like, in this quote, my favorite in the book. "And oh, i want so much to sing. i tell myself no. but it is so hard to keep silent. so hard." this is also a example of sirena's pureness and you see she has a child-like way of being truthful to herself and her love. i love the ending thogh it may be sad, it is promiseing and sweet. (you gotta read the book, to find out the ending) this wonderful book is the most real and mythicall book i have ever read, it is true and beautiful. once you read it, you will understand.
Rating: Summary: I loved it Review: I think this book was very well written. And i enjoyed it very much! Donna Jo Napoli is one of the best! The book is just wonderful and everyone should enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Delicious! I love a book that satisfies my hunger for words. Review: Extremely well writen. I got this book as a present and could hardly put it down. It's written in first character format that's new to me but a refreshing change of pace. The amount of reserch she must've put into the making of this book is outstanding. You'll be dreaming about mermaids in your sleep.
Rating: Summary: I LOVE THIS BOOK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: this is the best book I've ever read! I love the way this auther writes about the story and about life.
Rating: Summary: critical, but good Review: I thought that Sirena was a well writen book. The beginning was a little slow but once you got into it, it was hard to put down. I really thought the book would have been better suited for someone younger that I(13/8grade). Overall it was a good book with a lot of captivating parts.
