Rating: Summary: Read it! Review: I give this book 4 and 1/2 stars. It was so sad at the end but is worth the read. If you like myths, this is the book for you. The age reading level should be ... any age.Sirina's song is traveling sailors to their death. The only problem is that her song is her only way to become immortal. A human has to fall in love with her, and she will be come immortal. When she is immortal, she can never die. Read the rest, you'll be surprised what happens. My favorite book is Zel, also by Donna Jo Napoli. Check it out!
Rating: Summary: sirena Review: In this book you go threw many adventures. I LOVED THIS BOOK!! It is very VERY discriptive and interesting for those of you that are in to fantasy and gods. I've read it twice and every time it is better and better.
Rating: Summary: Sirena is another great Napoli book Review: In the tradition this author keeps, she tells the myth of the sirens in a new and fresh way. When Sirena realizes that she can only bring death to any man that will love her, she goes to a deserted island to live in solitude. However, she ends up meeting a sailor who has been abandoned by his crew. The rest of the book is about their relationship. I liked it a lot but not as much as Zel, another book by the same author. However, some people like it better. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who like Napoli's books or historical fiction.
Rating: Summary: View from a teenagers perspective Review: This book was so creative in its storyline, like none I've ever seen before. When a friend seys "You've got to read this book!" and then she hands it to me "You won't be able to put it down!" she siad. When I started reading it I was amazed on how fast I got in to it. How much I could relate to it myself. The mythodegy in the story was facinating. The way the storys are portrayed.Even though this has the basic storyline of an all around great fairytale; it's still original. I think a sequil would be wonderful with the right storyline. It would bring out a new light to the story. The author made a terrific classic!
Rating: Summary: Thoughtprovoking Review: I can be leary of authors who give voices to characters who previously had no voice; however, Napoli does a brillant job of bringing Greek myth to life. Sirena has a depth of character rarely afforded the women of Greek myth. A bittersweet tale of an unlikely herione.
Rating: Summary: Excellent read Review: I think that this book is an excellent read and it is truly worth buying. This book is about a mermaid (Sirena) that, along with her sisters, lure men out to the rock, which they rest on, with their song. They have to do this to gain imortality, and this is the best time to do it. But Sirena protests and runs (or swims) away and that is where the main part of the story begins. I myself, read this entire book in two days. That may not mean much to you, but for I and the people that know me, that's saying alot.
Rating: Summary: Good recommendation Review: Donna Jo Napoli's books were recommended to me because I had purchased some Robin McKinley books through them, and I'm glad I took them up on it. I still like both authors, but Napoli's concise style is refreshing in comparison with McKinley's more cumbersome novels. Napoli's sentences did feel choppy and simplistic for about the first page, but I was quickly drawn in to the story and found it easy to connect with emotionally. (I'll even confess to shedding a few tears.) The book also made me want to look further into Greek mythology. Unfortunately I would not recommend the book for the younger end of the "young adult" range, due to some sexual content. But all in all a wonderful story and very well-written.
Rating: Summary: Fate and Fantasy Review: This book is amazingly catching and it kept me reading it until the end. Sirena is a wonderful character who longs for love and immortaity, only to fall in love with a man who is condemned by Hera. Napoli includes legendary myths of Greece to give depth and personality to the characters and presents Sirena as a live human being, who happens to be a mermaid. I anxiously await the sequel to find out what happens to...I won't spoil the ending.
Rating: Summary: Fate and Fantasy Review: This was the first book I read from Napoli and it was excellent. Sirena is a sincere mermaid who longs for love and immortality, only to fall in love with a man who is condemned by Hera. This book is a great comination of fate and fantasy. I highly recommend this book to anyone. The only thing that held this book from getting five stars from me was that the ending was abrupt. I wanted to find out what would happen to....I shouldn't spoil the ending. I'll be waiting for the sequel! =)
Rating: Summary: Good Children's Literature? You Bet! Review: Well, I've read lots of good children's literature in the past, but this is simply outstanding, if you can get past the choppiness of the sentances, I think you'll really enjoy it. Sirena is a moving story about a young mermaid coming of age....
