Rating: Summary: Sirena Review: Cursed by the jealous Nereid Rhadope, Sirena and her sisters live with mortality in the hybrid forms of mermaids. As mortals, they will wither and die, unless they capture the heart of a human man. Then they will win immortality and live forever. Given the gift of enchanting song by the goddess Dora, Sirena and her sisters sing sailors their deaths. After one of her sisters is killed by a throng of sailors shipwrecked on their isle, Sirena runs away to the island Lemnos, where she will begin a new life. But Lemnos is not abandoned after all and Sirena meets a young warrior, Philocetes. Sirena longs to sing--he has accepted her revolting form and it would be so easy to seduce, but she tells herself that she should win love not with song but with heart. As the tale unfolds the wanted revenge of the nymph Oenone, a dead hero, Philocetes' honor and Sirena's own hard-earned gift interfere with her love and she must make a painful choice... Donna Jo Napoli ties the legends of Greek Mythology and the Trojan War into the breathtaking tale "Sirena" with elegant writing that no lover of Ancient Greece can resist.
Rating: Summary: A lovely and memorable read. Review: I thought this was a lovely tale set in the classical world of mythology. The story is about a young mermaid, Sirena, who wants to find a love that is true, not one that is formed because of her mesmerizing, enchanting singing. It was sort of deceptively simply written - very clear, very easy to read, but by no means simplistic. The straightforward style was so unexpected and refreshing when the tale was so much in the realm of fantasy and classical mythology. The result was that the world of gods, goddesses, mystical creatures and heroes was entirely believable. The hero she falls in love with, Philoctetes, was warm, humorous and down-to-earth, and you really felt for the lovely, melancholy, intelligent Sirena and understood how she was feeling. Ultimately I thought this story was about finding love even if you are "different." Sirena is afraid that her mermaid's tail will repulse Philoctetes, but she ultimately finds out otherwise. What a lovely message about acceptance of yourself and others, and of hope. Don't miss this one.
Rating: Summary: Great Book i read it in one day Review: Sirena is a great book. It is very detailed, the romance and the pain. I thought of it to be very good and romantic. Rating: Summary: Sirena is awsome. Review: Sirena by Donna Jo Napoli is a great novel. Donna Jo Napoli is a genious. Sirena is very well written and very interesting. Ms. Napoli has a great style of writing. This book was many great things but it definately was not bad.It was probably one of my favorite books. It contained little bits of what I like in stories. It was a romance novel. It was also an exciting and an adventuress novel too. Sirena had a lot of Greek myths mixed into the story, which made it even more interesting to read. On top of all this the book was short. It was an easy read. I really hope you decide to read this book because of me. I hope I inspired you to read it. Sirena is very very good. And thank you so much, Ms. Napoli, for writing such a wonderful novel!!
Rating: Summary: Not as good as i had hoped Review: i had really been wanting to read this book for a long time, and when i finally got my hands on it, i was very excited and started it that night. I was really dissappointed when i had at last finished the book though. Although it was well written, that was the only good thing i could thing i could find about the book, and i felt that I had wasted my time in reading 'Sirena' and my money in buying it. There was a lack of 'realness' in Sirena. She was very conceited and she was boring. She believed anything she was told and didn't really think for herself. I didn't like anything about her character. Philoctetes also had a very uninteresting character. And for the most part, they were the only two characters in the book. All the other smaller characters were also upseting and there were so many times when i found my self fretting over the stupid action that i knew that one of the characters was going to make. The whole book was very predictable. Although i would not recommend this book, i would definately recommend 'Zel', also be Donna Jo Napoli. But in almost every aspect, this book was poor quality and not as good as i had hoped.
Rating: Summary: Kind of verging.... Review: well. this book was beautifully written. but...it had a problem. SIRENA WAS [not very smart]!!!! oh and whoever the guy on the island who she fell in love with, his character i found to be annoying and unlikable. i couldn't imagine someone even as ditzy as Sirena falling for him. That's why i couldn't decide between 4 and 5. a 5 book would be captivating and have interesting, likable characters. this book was captivating...but for the wrong reasons. i wanted so badly at the end for sirena to come to her senses (if she indeed did have some) and leave the guy. Napoli it seemed wanted him to be handsome. but he seemed to be (without seeing a drawing) gawky and....annoying. in all honesty i can't think of a better word. if u like lust rather than love, go ahead and read this. if u like true romance and adventure (ect) read [different books].
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK! From 13-y.o. reader Review: Wonderful book, very creative. This book will draw you right in. I couldn't put it down! I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. I recomend it to every one. You'll want to read it again and again! (I did!) There was never a time I just put it down because it was getting boring. Napoli writes wonderfully! A MUST READ!
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: This is certainly one of the best books I've ever read...I couldn't put it down...it's awesome if you like novels about Ancient Greece and sexalicious books....this one's got it all......
Rating: Summary: Glorious!!! Review: I had wanted to read this book for a really long time, and I finally got it-And I have to tell you, it's the most beautiful love story.Every feeling Sirena experiences sounds all too familiar to me-I often get the smae feelings. But the 12-up age rating is I think a little necessary. I know at a younger age I would have had a really hard time understnading Sirena's yearning for a love-though I understand it perfectly now.Love stroy's such as these are good fro the teenage years-you understnad what Napoli's talking about much better in this stage. Buffs of Greek Mythology will also enjoy all of the classic refernces-such as Hera's wrath-so it's also good fro them(Like me-I'm the biggest fan of Greek Mythology!) Beautiful-the prose and language is so lovely. I'll read it again after I'm done with all the other things I'm reading-It's too beautiful to go without a second, third, fourth, or even fifth reading. I look forward to Napoli's other works! :)
