Summary: Pretty good but not a book that would capture you
Review: I finished reading this book this morning. I had to read it because I needed points on a school book program. I haven't read the first one though. It's funny I always end up reading the sequel to a book! Its basicly about a girl named Dicey Tillerman who's the oldest out of four children. They had to run away from where they used to live because there mother went mentally ill. Their grandmother took them in and promised to adopt them. They had a pretty good year except for a few things. Dicey was anti-social when it came to people out of her family until she met the smart Wilhemina and the guitar playing Jeff (Who by the way has a thing for Dicey). Sammy, Dicey's youngest brother was unbelievedly well behaved for a while until it came to marbles. Her younger sister Maybeth, who's very talented with piano and singing, has trouble reading and James, Dicey's other older younger brother, developed a phonics plan for her because he's smart and comes up with the best ideas. They make family friends with Maybeth's piano teacher, the overweight, Mr. Lingerle. Enough of the introduction though. Dicey is being forced to grow up when she doesn't want to, she has to start wearing regular clothes, buy a bra because she now has a bosom, and deal with hardships of life. I think it's a good book all in all. It's sad towards the end, but I won't give too much away. You'll have to read it for yourself.

Summary: Slow Beginning, Might be too Tough for a Young Reader
Review: The first fifty or so pages of the book move very slowly. It is very difficult to get to know and understand the characters and sometimes, the actions of particular characters seem unpredictable to the point of absurdity. I think that while this is a Newberry Award winning book, it may be too difficult for many young readers. Due to the slow beginning and the fact that the novel is character-driven, this novel would have difficulty holding the interest of an average or below average reader. This is not a book that should be used in a classroom setting either as boys will have an especially tough time relating to the main character Dicey who is a tough character for even young girls to relate to. While Dicey does find herself in some universal situations: buying her first bra, making friends in a new town, finding acceptance, having a boy notice her, being accused of cheating, experiencing the death of someone close to her, I think that by and large, young girls still could not relate to Dicey in many ways. Dicey is far from lazy, she is very responsible and very intelligent and a rather motherly character. These qualities that define her character are what will make her stand apart from the majority of readers.

Summary: A Great Book
Review: I read this book for a summer report for school and Dicey's Song is a great book. What gets you interessted in this book is that it is not a make-belive fantacy book, it can make you think "Wow, this can realy happen to someone.". So, if you're looking for a good book to read, read Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voight.

Summary: Growing up isn't always easy
Review: Now, that the Tillerman children are living with their grandmother, Dicey doesn't have to worry about her sibilings so much. But, Dicey does. Dicey gets an after school and weekend job to help out. She doesn't seem to want any friends and she's failing home ec because she doesn't think it's important. Then something happens to her mother, who is in a Boston hospital. Who ever said that growing up is easy?

Summary: GREAT BOOK TO DO WITH A CLASS OF 7TH GRADERS!
Review: I purchased 13 copies ... to read with my seventh grade Reading class. The students, especially the ladies, really enjoyed it. I had also purchased ..., LITPLANS, for Dicey's Song. With the two, it was a very rewarding lesson to teach. I strongely recommend this book. I even had a couple of students look for the sequel to this book,Seventeen Against the Dealer. I also recommend the prequel to this book, The Homecoming. Good Luck and Enjoy!

Summary: Great book for the serious teen
Review: I was a teenager (about 10 years ago) when I first read this book. I related to it tremendously because I was the oldest child in my family and I had to take care of my sisters often because my parents worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. Of course, this is nothing compared to what Dicey had to go through, but I remember thinking what an incredible story this was and it was first time that responsibility was presented to me so clearly in a book. For the first time, I read about someone who cared more about her family than herself, this is very different from the usual young adult books you read out there. I also learned for the first time what resourcefulness means. Dicey had to do a lot of "resourceful" things to keep her family together. All in all, I learned many important lessons from this book. It's definitely more serious than the Harry Potter books that all the kids are reading today. This book dealt with a lot of serious issues, I can imagine that kids nowadays might not relate to it because it seems to me that kids nowadays have no worries and no responsibilites.

Summary: Dicey's Song
Review: If you are ever looking for a great realistic fiction book I suggest reading Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voigt. It is about a girl named Dicey Tillerman, a 13 year old girl who had to move with her 4 other siblings to her Grandmothers house after her mom "dissapeared", causing her to start a new school and a new life that she does not like. In the course of the book Dicey learns many of the most important lessons in life, learning that she can't take care of everyone without taking care of herself, and learning to let go of something very important. I enjoyed the book because it was so realistic how it focused on this family, who is struggling with money and trying to live a happy, normal life.
