Rating: Summary: Almost a real life story Review: Dicey's Song seems like someone's real life -- When the children of the Tillerman family arrive at their grandma's house, 13-year-old Dicey, the oldest of the children, had a new challenge: to let go of the sadness in her mind. One of things that bother her is about her mother who is very sick in a Boston hospital. Her family is poor and Dicey decides to help by getting a job in a grocery store. Dicey's sister, Maybeth of 8-year-old, has a problem with her reading skills. Dicey and her grandma are worried how she does in school. Maybeth finds that she has a talent for music and gets two piano lessons a week from her music teacher. After finding her true talent she worries less and does better in school. 10-year-old James is a good and bright student, but he is also an excellent paperboy. With more money from James' paper route and Dicey's job, the Tillermans are fed and clothed daily. 7-year-old Sammy has made friends with many local boys and has been getting used to his new home. Over time Dicey gets used to her surroundings and makes lots of friends at home and school. Although I felt this book is kinda boring, it does reflect "real life".
Rating: Summary: Must Read Review: Cynthia Voigt grabbed my attention with "Homecoming" and I just had to read more about the Tillerman's which led to "Dicey"s Song." Growing up is difficult and nobody can portray the struggles involved better than Voigt. It is easy to empathise with Dicey, her courage and her lust for her family and living. She is a heroine to be proud of. Young and young-at-heart will enjoy the Tillerman's and especially Dicey...
Rating: Summary: A Keeper Review: Despite what others may say, I, a girl myself, can relate to this beautifully crafted book. Although, it is character driven, it basically mirrors real life. In life, we are focused on character rather than spontaneous events. Dicey is a young girl who battles growing up, keeping her family together, and buying time for her own sake. With cheating, her mother dieing, Voigt truly brings out a sympathetic tone for this distressed and striving teenager. In most ways and others, similar to the traumas of a teenage girl's life. You, as the reader, will probably be more attracted to the path of Dicey's actions rather life moving events. This is a must read, and take it from someone who has read and evaluated the book several times.

Rating: Summary: Dicey's Song Review: Dicey's grandmother has finally adopted the Tillerman children. To help out with the money problems that her grandmother was going to have trying to raise four children, Dicey finds a job at the local store. When Dicey's grandmother gets a letter from Boston, her grandmother decides to take a break and go to Boston for a couple of days with Dicey, while Maybeth's music teacher babysat then while they were gone. While they were leaving for Boston, Maybeth's music teacher hands Dicey's grandmother an envolope filled with money just in case they needed it. The reason they went to Boston was to visit Dicey's mother that had her and her brothers and sisters in a parking lot of a mall years ago. When they arrived at the hospital, they find her lying in bed staring into space. Whenever they tried talking to her, they would never get an answer back. She just sat there as still as can be. Dicey knew that she would have to let her go instead of keeping her here in this world. There were parts of this book that I really liked, but at times, it could get really boring. I liked how it was a book that a person could relate to. What happens to the characters in this book could happen to anyone, even you and me. The author makes the characters sound real, like they really exist in this world. Some parts of this book are emotional, like when Dicey saw her mother lying in the hospital bed. At other times, it is full of excitment. My favorite part of the book was when Dicey had to teach Maybeth how to do fractions. Since she was behind on her math and vocabualry, Dicey tutored her. No matter how hard Dicey tried to teach her how to do it, she still didnt get it. Dicey tried teaching her with oranges and cut them into pieces, but still, it didnt work. When it came to music, everything came easily to Maybeth. She had a wonderful voice and whenever sang a song, she could remember it within minutes.
Rating: Summary: God I hated this book.... Review: I, like many of these people who reviewed this book, had to read this piece of garbage for a school project over the summer. I am warning all who LIKE to read to stay the heck away from this book. When I read this book, it was boring and the problems seemed too unimportant. And I prefer to not be seen as an anti-reading guy, as I love reading....
Rating: Summary: Dicey's Song Review: In a small cottage by a lake lived a misunderstood grandmother and four grandchildren. Dicey is the oldest and likes to be in charge. She has a job at the grocery store to help her grandmother support all of them. James is an intelligent child, he likes to read. Maybeth is slow, but she has talent on the piano. Finally Sammy, he likes to play chess with their grandmother. During the summer Dicey is trying to fix a boat so she can ride it during the spring of next year. Fall finally arrives and it is time for them to go to school and grandma signs them up. When they start school Dicey's grandmother gets strange mail from the hospital that tell her that the children's mother is getting worse, but she never tells the children. [Though Dicey and the grandmother don't get along.] There are many conflicts in this story. When their mom dies the grandmother adopts them. If you like reading about conflicts and adventure then you should get this book. If you didn't read Homecoming then you will get lost.
Rating: Summary: Dicey's Song Review: After struggling to survive the summer alone with her two brothers and sister, Dicey finally arrives at her grandmother's house. Dicey Tillerman a thirteen-year-old girl has had the responsibility of keeping her family together. Now her new challenge will be learn to let go and except that she is only a teenager herself After moving in with their grandmother, and starting to become a family, Dicey realizes that life as she knew was to change forever. She starts to live as any other teenager would. Enrolling herself in school and even getting a job at a local grocery store, she becomes more like a sister and less of mother to her siblings. Dicey also starts to rely and be more open with her grandmother, emotionally. Over time she creates a tight circle of friends in school and at home. The Tillermans themselves start to bond as a family. With all the kids in school, they become more and more as ordinary children. The oldest boy, James, not only becomes an excellent student but also a reliable paperboy. Maybeth finds passion in music, while Sammy makes friends with the local boys. [But with their lives settled in, what will a word about their long lost mother do] Reading this book helped me find the true meaning of a family. I enjoyed this book and i hope a lot of you will too!
Rating: Summary: SO EMOTIONAL Review: This book is so wonderful. I can't recall the number of times I've read it, but I was about 11 the first time. Dicey is a girl to whom we can all relate. Sure, not everyone has a mentally challenged mom who's missing, a slow sister, a rebellious brother, and a genius brother. But the relations are something we all have to deal with in some form. Also, the daily struggles are something we can relate to; finding food may not be difficult, but you may relate to finding a job. Or staying with people you're not comfortable with. I really loved, and still love, this book.
Rating: Summary: A very well-written book Review: This book is a great sequel to Homecoming. Dicey and her sibling have to cope with many new things and adapt to a new environment at their grandmother's house. First, they have many troubles in school and with their grandmother. Their grandmother and they didn't seem to get along very well, but as time passes, they learn to try to solve their problems. Each character undergoes many changes, especially Dicey. Dicey keeps the family in order and is very intelligent and clever in her decision-makings. She tries to keep every family member happy. In this book in contrast to Homecoming (the 1st book), Dicey grows up physically and mentally, James gets smarter, Maybeth discovers her talent for singing, and Sammy works harder and is not so young in personality anymore. Dicey's song is truly a good book to display the obstacle of growing up and shows how lucky we are to have a life like ours in comparison to a life like theirs.
