In her first book (the ruby in the smoke) she found out that her father was not her real father, that she was sold for a ruby, people have wanted her life sixteen years, both of her fathers are murdered, about five thousand people died for her to have the live she had, about five people are murderd because of her and all of this for a ruby. In this book Sally starts her own business. Soon to have it be tried to shut down. She becomes pregagnet with a child I won't tell you who. And more... theres deciet, romance, murder, adultery and plots that never stop.
Rating: Summary: Weakest (but still good) book in a fine trilogy Review: In this book we meet Sally settled in life, with a job as a financial adviser. She advises a client to invest in a company that goes bust, because its ship is sunk. She decides to investigate. At the same time, one of her friends is trying to track down a genius magician...Although, like the other books in this series, this book is hard to put down, and very entertaining, I didn't like it as much. The plot is a bit far-fetched and the politics and the inventions go a little too far in altering the past. I also found some of the characters hard to believe, too. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this book, I just didn't think it was up to the same standard as the other two. Moralists may disapprove of Sally's behaviour in this book - yet another case of the modern intruding into a historical novel, but then again, her behaviour is in keeping with her character, so I didn't mind it. Plus, it is pretty much the norm today. Just a warning to prim parents who worry about book characters as role models. Otherwise I have no problems in recommending this book, along with the rest of the series, which is even better.
Rating: Summary: Must Read Review: This is a great book! Philip Pullman is such a wonderul author, all of his books are great! (But... we're talking about Shadow in the North) This book is about a young girl who has to fight a lot of battles in her life to find the truth that she's been searching for. It tells of her woes, thinking/plotting, enemies, falls, and her time when she has overcome the evil. I have read Philip Pullman books over and over, and you know what, I have never tired of any of them. The only problem is to find another book that I like to read as much as Pullman's.
Rating: Summary: Six stars? Please? Pleaaaase? Please...? Review: Back when I was in middle school, I was quite a bookworm. One summer I spent every night with a book, in the huge armchair at my house. This was one of them. I cried at the end, I *cried.* That's the very first thing that I have to say about this book, and I'm not ashamed at all. All of Pullman's books have such real characters, so that in time you feel so very attached to them by every cell in your body that at times reading can be difficult. All of the books in this series are so full of emotion in some parts that its unbearable. I really became very attached to the characters, not just emotionally. They're just all so lovable, or hatable. Quite a splendid cast, if I do say so myself. But, the romantic aspect of this novel can be a bit difficult to take. However, that's not all I have to say about this. I must mention that I read this overnight, which was a big deal to me back then, since books this size seemed *huge.* The plot is excellent, and it held me captive for quite some time. Every part of it made me want more, to read more. This is one of those books that you can't put down the first time through, and then want to reread many times because it is just oozing with coolness and goodness and plain ol' niftiness. So, read this book. Read the other books in this trilogy too. Read His Dark Materials. Read anything by this author, it's all wonderful. I may seem to be speaking behind a veil of nostalgia, but I am not. (However, I would be if I was proclaiming the greatness of something like Power Rangers - eeeew.) Go on, read this book. But, be warned, you will have tears in your eyes by the end. I still do, whenever I find myself rereading it. Any book by this author is well worth your time and money - trust me.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: If you are a romance lover, or a mystery addict, this book is for you. Sure, at first it may seem complicated with so much information being somewhat linked together, but don't worry. For you mystery people out there, the book will immediately grab your attention, and hold it throughout the plot. However, if you're a romance lover, like myself, you won't be thrilled with the book until the point of climax and the resolution. However, I promise, by the end of this book, you will have tears in your eyes. Tears of despair? Or tears of glee? That's for you to find out. If you're going to buy one book today, let it be this one.
Rating: Summary: sad Review: it has been almost three years since i read this book and thinking about it still makes me cry. now that is what i call good writing.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ! Review: This is by far the most imaginative author of this age! All Phillip Pullman's books are of an excellent high standard to which no other author compares. The best of the Sally Lockhart Trilogy, this book delves into, love, loss, deception and lies. The mind of Sally Lockhart is explored in detail and is written in a most creative style lacked by the writers of today. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone of all ages. If you have not read Pullman, you have not lived!
Rating: Summary: This is a brilliant book! Review: I have read The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife and have already ordered The Amber Spyglass. I went to the library and found this and said,"Hey! It's by Philip Pullman! I'll get it out." Not until I got home did I realize it was the second book and I hadn't read the 1st book. but I read it anyway and ended up loving it! It is the tantalizing story of a mystery about why a man named Axel Bellman is chasing a magician! The story takes many unexpected twists and has a great ending. I guarentee you will love this book!

Rating: Summary: As great as the first one! Review: A lot of times the sequel doesn't live up to the first. That certainly does not apply to this book! As suspenful as the first, but more of that lovey-dovey, mushy-gushy stuff. Pullman continues his great writing streak with the third and final book to the trilogy, The Tin Princess.
