Summary: Amazing
Review: There really isn't much to say about this book, other than it is simply amazing. It really provides a deep look into a realistic situation, and I think it was very well written. I personally think that it did an amazing job of talking about "smack" but in an almost subliminal way, that would be enough to stop people from trying it. I encourage anyone who is looking for a good book to read it. I read it about 7 times since I bought it a few months ago, and it is the book I always pick up when I feel like reading and don't have any new books around.

Summary: Boring in the beginning but I bet it would be good later...
Review: My gosh the beginning is pretty boring. Okay the first 2 pages or something are pretty interesting but when you enter the first chapter you begin to lose motivation of reading the book. Then you just can't continue. At least not with me. I'm sorry but I need books to be consecutively interesting. This one was not. So I never finished it. But I'm sure it would be pretty good later in the book. It's just I never got that far. If you're a reader who really likes reading and isn't that picky of books and stuff like that, then go for it. Read it. But if you're not, then DON'T!

Summary: A great book
Review: I read this book maybe a year ago, but I have never forgotten the wonderful plots and characters of it. I really really loved this book, because it takes you inside the world of drugs, love, growing up, and addiction. One thing I also enjoyed was that it was a British book, and the terms used in it, such as "squats". I was sad to read the last page, because I wanted the book to keep going, but I never forgot the last line, with Tar speaking, something about what his doctor said. Ahh it was great. I definantly recommend this book!

Summary: Smack the highs and lows
Review: Smack by Melvin Burgess is a real life story about two young teenagers who run away and live with people their age in a squat getting into the dangers of heroine.

Tar, a fourteen-year old boy, runs away from his abusive drinking mother and father to live on the streets. Gemma also fourteen is his girlfriend who runs away with him because she is just fed up with her life and the restrictions in it. They find a squat, which in England is an abandoned house, to live in with three older people. At a party they meet Lily and Rob two sixteen year olds who have their own squat. Gemma gets to know Lily and realizes that they have so much in common and she goes to live with them. Tar eventually realizes that he is better off with Lily and Rob. The two start to take heroine and they get into the highs and lows of this dangerous drug. They think they've got everything under control until they relize that getting clean just isn't so easy.

The characters were very life like and had real feelings. The book tells about a real-life situation in taking heroine. It doesn't lecture and doesn't have an opinion about whether the drug is bad or good. In this story the different characters tell their point of view in each chapter. This is a book that you can't stop reading it keeps you interested until the very end.

This book would be recommended for young adults and teens. They can relate to the problems and pressures of the characters in the book.

Summary: it only takes one hit
Review: Smack by Melvin Burgess is the dramatic tale of two very young teenagers that run away from home in an attempt to get away from their disfunctional, alcaholic families, and are lured into a life of drugs and crime.
Tar and Gemma are two kids who run away to the city looking for a better life. They figure that with two new caring friends and an old abandon building to live in that life will definetly work out for the better. That is, until a couple of new friends of theirs introduce them to the drug heroin, otherwise know as SMACK. Right from the first hit it seems like Tar and Gemma's lives are torn apart. All they can think about is were or when the next fix is going to come from.
I feel like this was a great book and it definetly shows the effects drugs can have on a persons life. Although this is a fictional book it has alot of truth to the life of someone who is addicted to drugs. After reading this book you will walk away with the feeling that you know a person or people who are going through simular situations and could really relate to the characters in this book. In conclusion anyone who craves drama, (mild)violence, and a "not so happily ever after ending", will fall in love with this book.

Summary: a lil reminder
Review: This was just a book whose, to tell the truth, coverart caught my eye after reading a few other reviews. I lived in the SouthEast of England for the "good part" of my adolescence and though heroin was never so easy to see i suppose i never really took a close look. Of course in the late 80s/early90's the street drug and choice of kids my age was Ectasy. A positive, the real life language was great (and the lil glossary of terms in the back really made me giggle), a negative: I never quite made it so far as to touch me, or even care all too much at all.

Summary: Smacking your lips for a good read?
Review: Smack was an interesting book. Gemma and Tar are two teenagers that any teen could relate to. Gemma's father doesn't approve of Tar or the crowd he hangs out with. She just wants independence. Tar parents are both alcoholics, his father beats him and his mom uses him. Finally he can't take it anymore and he just wants out. He runs away and Gemma soon follows. While staying in a squat they meet a punk couple named Lily and Rob. From then on their life changes forever. While living with them they begin using drugs. Denial and attempts to be clean ensue.
This book gives insight to what it might be like to fall under the power of drugs, the way it can run your life. Its a little scary that to see just how easy it all begins.
I recommend this book to all you who looking for a good read.
