Rating: Summary: I didn't like it Review: Timothy was not a real black man to me. No real black man would take that kind of disrespect from a child. I didn't like the fact that the characters were seen as equals when the older man was wiser and stronger than the boy. I kept wanting Timothy to put Phillp in his place. And why is it that Timothy had to die in order for Phillp to respect him. Timothy seemed like an Uncle Tom to me. It was well written with great detail, but Tim, shouldn't have let that little boy treat him like a punk. I guess for those people who aren't convinced that blacks and whites are equal they should read this book . But as for me, I already knew that.
Rating: Summary: Childhood Memories Review: This book had such a great impact on me that 13 years after it was required reading for me in sixth grade, I am again reading it - this time for pleasure. Partly because of this book, I became an avid reader. It shows that good literature in schools does make an impact on a person.
Rating: Summary: The Cay Review: I read the Cay while on vacation at the sea. I am a teacher and this is a required text for my students. I was intrigued at every turn in the story. It brought back memories of the great books I read as an adolescent. However, this book speaks to all ages what with historical references and the accurate description of the human condition, both in and out of danger.
Rating: Summary: Dis b'dat outrageous cay. Review: Thorough, accurate, and complete, The Cay by Theodore Taylor wrenches the heart and intrigues the mind. This veridical description of the trials undergone by a young white boy and an old negro man on an unfertile island in the Caribbean attracts the reader and keeps him/her hooked until the very end. From the opening paragraph, Theodore Taylor has the reader deeply concerned for the welfare of the main character, Phillip. When Phillip is sad, the reader is sad. Later in the book, when Phillip is dissapointed, the reader is dissapointed. As Phillip grows up throughout the book, the reader comes of age at the same rate. While many reviewers credit this book for its story of the triumph of racism between the two, that issue is non-existant while reading. More is there a feeling of empathy for the two marooned men.
Rating: Summary: This is the story of Timothy and Phillip. Review: I think that this is the best story that I have ever read. The worst part of the book was when Phillip became blind. The best part was when Phillip finally got saved. I was glad that Stew Cat was saved, too. I liked that book so much that I read TIMOTHY OF THE CAY, too.
Rating: Summary: For English Class we had to read The Cay and do essays on it Review: I am in sixth grade now and our english teacher picked the book The Cay by Theadore Taylore to read as an assigned book. The Cay was the most recent assigned book we have read so we are still doing essays. Just by looking at the cover, this book look stupid to me. But when I read it, it was excellent. My teacher is always making us write essays for assigned books. The topics for our Cay essays were as followed: Phillip's immaturity changing to mature; Phillip's prejudice towards blacks and then accepting blacks; a newspaper article on the German & Dutch war; a brochure for presuading people to visit a Caribbean island; a newspaper article on the rescue of Phillip; and a couple others I can't think of. I mostly got A+ and A's on all of these essays. The only thing that brought the 10 rating down to a 9 is because it was hard to read when Timothy talked. But other wise I would give it a ten. I think that this book would be good for boys and girls ages 11+. I am 12 now so I would qulafy. I hope you will read this book. It is awesome!!!
Rating: Summary: Great story: survival, growing up, cross-cultural awareness! Review: I had intended to read to this book some time ago. After reading the prequel/sequel last year (Timothy of the Cay) I decided to pick this up at the library. It read very quickly, and I enjoyed it immensely. I started reading it today with my grade-school-age children; I am interested to see their reaction. I was surprised that The Cay has been classified as a "youth" book because it contains many sophisticated passages and subtle messages. This book is written in a very simple style, yet it can keep the attention of anyone. There are many layers to appreciate.
Rating: Summary: It was very thought provocing and origenal. Review: Since it takes place in the 1960s there is alot of diologe based on the war and class diffirences. I liked it mostly because of the history based text.It is a good book(as far as books go).
Rating: Summary: this book is very interesting. Review: This book is very interesting because it makes sense and I think the characters are very interesting.Phillip,Timothy, and Stew Cat are cool characters. They have a fun adventure on a cay in Devil's Mouth after thier ship is torpedoed, during World War 2.
Rating: Summary: It was OK,it was tense in some parts.I liked that. Review: If "Batman" was in it, it would of been better. I liked how they used things that could really happen. But it was a little boring in some parts. It could have been better if there was like a spy and things like that ,because I like action. But it was pretty good other wise.If a huge bunch of monkeys were in it, and they all came and wiped out there little hut and sucked out their inner organs and ate their brains with ketchup on a silver platter it would have been awesome.or if the monkeys would have boiled their heads in acid and squeezed their innerds out, And other things like that!!
