Rating: Summary: The Cay Review: The Cay, by Theodore Taylor is a powerful story about overcoming prejudice and survival. In 1942, 11-year-old Phillip Enright lives with his parents on the Dutch island of Curacao, but when the war moves too close for comfort, his mother decides to travel with him back to the safety of Virginia. When their boat is torpedoed, however, Phillip is blinded and finds himself adrift on a life raft with an old black man and a cat. They eventually land on a deserted island. At first Phillip is suspicious of "the large Negro," but soon grows to trust the generous Timothy. Phillip is an 11 year old boy who grows up in Curacao. Because of his parents Phillip develops prejudice against blacks. But with his upcoming experience all that is about to change. Timothy is a older black man who was stranded on the island with Phillip. He owns a cat named Stew Cat that was brought with him. Timothy helps Phillip survive on this island and teaches him about survival. The war and the German submarines have come to Phillip's part of the Caribbean, and Phillip's mother fears for their safety. Phillip's dad must stay behind for his job, but Phillip and his mother board a ship that will take them back to Virginia where they originally lived. Two days after being on the ship, the ship is torpedoed by German U-boats and during the evacuation, Phillip is separated from his mother. Phillip awakens to find himself on a raft with Timothy and a cat named Stew Cat. He has also found that he was left blinded after the attack. The three castaways finally reach a small cay where they must learn to live off the land in order to survive while they hope to be rescued. Timothy made a rope that would go from the hut to the ocean so that Phillip could get around the island. He taught Phillip how to fish and many survival skills. Phillip one day ask Timothy if they could be friends. Timothy responds that he was always his friend. Timothy develops malaria and a hurricane hits the cay. It left everything on the tiny cay devastated. While protecting Phillip from the hurricane Timothy dies. Phillip buries Timothy not forgetting everything he did for him and what he taught him. Phillip survive on the cay alone for about a month after the hurricane and is reunited with his family. He was brought to a doctor where his vision was restored to normal. There are many conflicts in this book that the main characters must overcome. This book is not only a great survival story, but also a touching story about overcoming prejudices and seeing a person for whom they really are. This is a must read for ages 11 and up.
Rating: Summary: The Cay Review: Written by Theodore Taylor, The Cay is, in our opinion, shallow. The plot is very touching- it is a story of overcoming a barrier of hate due to unfortunate circumstances. It would have been an excellent book if this point had been explored a little bit more. We feel that it is just too short for the sixth grade level, but will be fantastic for ages 9-10. Would you trust your life to a race you believed incompetant? What if you had no choice? Rating: Summary: WOW! WHAT A BOOK! YOU MUST READ! Review: I really enjoyed this book because it keeps you guessing what was going to happen next. The other reason why I really like this book is because it has alot of adventures. I liked the character Phillip Enright because he never gave up. The other reason I liked this character is he was very brave. The best part of the book was when Timothy(A fearsome west Indian native) and Phillip begin living their life on the cay. When they begin their life on the cay, is where their adventure begins. Phillip becomes blind and Timothy must show him how to survive without him on the cay. At the end of this book, Timothy becomes ill and could die at any time. Phillip is now left alone to find his way off the cay. Does Phillip ever get his eyesight back?? Does he ever get off the cay?? Does he ever see his parents again? That is a mystery till you read this wonderful book, The Cay, By Theodore Taylor.
Rating: Summary: The Cay - a good book Review: This book was one of the best books I ever read. When the hurricane came to the island, it was described so vividly that I felt I was blowing away. It was a GREAT book.
Rating: Summary: Blind...But Now I see Review: Phillip, a 12-year-old boy, saw Timothy as a stupid, ugly old black man. It wasn't until Phillip became blind that he could actually "see" the real Timothy. This is a fast-paced, action fiction story set during World War II in the Caribbean Sea. All reference to war and bombs cease when Phillip and Timothy are shipwrecked, alone, on a deserted island. Their adventures there include survival, tropical storms and a revelation of the roots of prejudice. A very touching story. Theodore Taylor wrote this book in the 1960s and, in recent years, the sequal, Timothy of the Cay.
Rating: Summary: The Cay Review: After surviving a German attack on a tanker headed to the United States, Phillip, a young American boy, finds himself on a raft in the middle of the sea with a 70 year old West Indian black man. Phillip has been taught black people are "different" and feels Timothy is "beneath" him. After suffering from a head injury, Phillip becomes dependent on Timothy for his life on the island where they have become stranded. Although Philip is a spoiled and immature child, Timothy is patient and caring. A turning point in the book is when Timothy finally, after enduring much frustration and disrespect from Phillip, loses his temper. His action causes Philip to change drastically and begin to see Timothy as something much more than a stupid old black man. I would recommend this book to students from 5th to 8th grade. It shows how prejudice is instilled and how it can be conquered. It is an exciting survival story with an interesting plot and a wonderful theme.
Rating: Summary: Survival Review: When I started reading the Cay I didn't like it but when I started reading it I kinda liked it. Not that much but I didn't really like it that much. I'm sorry if I heart your feelings really I'am the only part I liked from The Cay is the part when Timathy died. I like bloody things.
