Summary: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
Review: "Not every thirteen year old girl is accused of murder, brought to trial and found guilty..." Meet Miss Charlotte Doyle, a heroic young lady who was obligated to sail the Seahawk as the only passenger. During a disastrous hurricane, Mr. Hollybrass, the first mate was brutally murdered by someone using Charlotte's dirk. The crew began a mutiny against Captain Jaggery, which leads Charlotte to questions his authority. At first Charlotte adores Jaggery but then he forces her into trial, where she is found guilty. Would Charlotte be hanged by dawn's light? Miss Doyle had to make a decision that would change her life forever.
When I read this historical fiction novel I felt proud of the women in our nations history. It made me think of all the great things females had accomplished which have sculpted out nation. I felt as if I was right there aboard the Seahawk, I couldn't put it down. The force of Charlotte's exhilarating personality will absorb you in to this superb story. This enchanting book made me want to be remembered like Charlotte Doyle.
This ALA winner, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle was a thrilling tale of murder and mystery on the high seas.

Summary: Adventure on the high seas
Review: I read the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle to my 7-year-old daughter and she was captivated by the story. We had to stop once in a while to look up a word but overall she was able to follow the action and got quite caught up in it. While the book does seem aimed at preteen girls, it actually has a universal appeal to anyone interested in tales of swashbuckling danger on the high seas.

Summary: FABULOUS, INTRIGUING, ADVENTUROUS!!!
Review: I loved this book SO MUCH!!! It is the book filled with THE MOST suspenseful, adventurous, heart attacking parts!! Charlotte is your average proper young lady, ready to sail from England to America. Well, it turns out she is setting sail with a frightening crew, and a "deadly" captain. Yeah. Not the finest place in the world. Well, at first, Charlotte is afraid of the crew, and adores the captain. But, when a plot is made by the crewmembers to seek revenge on their truly terrible captain occurs, Charlotte is the one to ruin it. Everything goes wrong because of her. So, to make it up to the crew, she dresses in boy's clothing, and joins them, therefore practically killing the captain for his hatefullness toward her. She does men's work on the ship just as well as they do. But, later on, Charlotte and her crew come across a HUGE hurricane, during which, a knife is found in the back of the first mate.....he was murdered!! Everyone thinks it was infact, "Miss Charlotte Doyle" who committed the crime. Later, when she is tried for the murder, she is unjustly accused by the captain. But it wasn't Charlotte. Then who? Well, here's the answer: READ THIS BOOK CAUSE I'M NOT GONNA TELL YOU, AND I KNOW YOU'RE DYING TO FIND OUT!

Summary: The Reviewers True Confessions
Review: I believe that The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is a great book that entrances the reader through the use of vivid imagery and foreshadowing. One thing that did bother me about the book that in some parts it just went on and on about how someone had a problem or how something was wrong. Like when Charlotte was sad about being abandoned by everyone on the ship the author (Avi) sort of drawled on and on about it, until I didnt really want to read it anymore.
This book is perfect for anyone (perferably a girl) that likes to imagine that they are the main character, I say this becuase there are so many parts in the book were the reader would have done something different from what the main Character did. Like when Charlotte found out that one of the men had a pistol she went and told the Captin Jaggery. Well if I were in here posision I would have done something completely different, like keep my mouth shut and not get into anyone elses business. But other readers would do something different.
If I had to change one thing about the book it would be the style in which the Author wrote the book, im my opion the writing was to dramatic for the plot.

Summary: Adventure.. Sea.. Pirates.. A Great Tale For Women!
Review: Avi has written award-winning books for a pre-adolescent audience, with a captivating voice and with unmatched success. Perhaps readers remember him from "Nothing But The Truth". In "True Confessions" he writes a novel about a strong and subversive young girl who defies mores and conventions of her day, rid the bad guy from the scene and save the day. It is full of mystery, suspense and plenty of action. Nevertheless, the romanticism of the historical period, the precise descriptions of the ship and the overall sense of good winning is remarkably written. I read this novel as a younger girl, and was quite entranced. The 1991 original cover featured Charlotte, radiant, her hair windswept wearing a lovely dress, by the starboard of the ship. This cover might have fooled some readers. Far from the conventional romance or swash-buckler it may come off as at first, it is not. It is Charlotte Doyle who single handedly finds herself, rescues others while doing it and defeats the terrible, dictatorial, sadist sea captain Jaggerty.

Initially, Charlotte, following the formulaic conventions of Victorian women of her day, does not oppose Jaggerty, even though some crew members, who are good at heart, desire mutiny. After she discovers for herself how cruel, how insensitive and inhuman this Jaggerty is, she joins the crew, dresses a sailor and finds herself in a spiraling series of events leading to the climatic finale. Charlotte Doyle is a great heroine, free-willed, independent and still, very feminine. She is a great role model in literature for young girls who can read the exciting prose of Avi.

I don't need to praise this novel anymore. Avi has done a marvelous job, a wondrous work of historical fiction with a strong awareness of women's empowerment. Hurray for Avi. I have not read a book by him in a long time. Perhaps he did'nt have to. Charlotte Doyle is his masterpiece and his other novels will live forever in the book shelves of many libraries and bookstores. Even if you have to find the out-of-print original copies. There are ways... thank God for the internet.
