Rating: Summary: The Ups and Downs of Charlotte Doyle Review: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is all around a good book, but there are some ups and downs. One reason this book is not humdrum is because it takes place in the early 1800's on a ship called the Seahawk. A girl named Charlotte, who is the main character, has to board the ship without any friends, only a rough crew of men and the captain. At first, you may think that Charlotte is a snob, but after you read on, your opinion may change. The villian in the story changes from chapter to chapter. This is one of the qualities that makes this book have unexpected twists and turns. The second mate, Mr. Hollybrass, tries to dissuade Charlotte not to go onto the ship. He only insinuates it, and Charlotte doesn't pick up the clue. Now about the characters. The main characters are Charlotte, Zachariah, and Captain Andrew Jaggery. Captain Jaggery's attitude is different towards different people. He tries to be a gentleman and is of a higher class than the crew, but readers beware, he has a downright massive temper. Zachariah is understanding, saintly, and mellow. He doesn't try to be anyone's enemy. On the other hand Charlotte is a normal high class girl. These characters have bad sides too. Captain Jaggery disrupts their customary outline of the crew. Charlotte can blurt things out before she thinks them through. Zachariah really shouldn't have groveled down in front of the crews opinions. This book is for people who like adventures and mysteries. You won't be able to put this book down. We definitly recommend this book!!!
Rating: Summary: All Hands On This Book: A Sure Must! Review: Our seventh grade class read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. Here are our thoughts on the book. The first few chapters seemed humdrum and interminable, but were very informative. As we progressed through the book, it took a grueling spin. The captain of the Seahawk, Captain Jaggery, at first seemed friendly towards Charlotte. Then Zachariah, a crew member, tells her the captain is malignant towards the crew and gives Charlotte a weapon to defend herself with from any harm in the future. You would never guess how cruel he truly was. He even accused Charlotte of committing a murder during a catastrophic storm that caused a lot of havoc. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is abound with counterfeit accusations and suspense. It will keep you vigilant all through the night. It would be a misdemeanor not to read this book!

Rating: Summary: Murder on the High Sea Review: .... we had the pleasure of reading a novel fromthe award-winning author Avi titled The True Confessions of CharlotteDoyle. We thought the book was exquisitely written and we gave it a 4star rating. In the beginning of the book the development of the storyline takes a tad long to get going. After a while the story becomesvery interesting with a great plot. The middle of the book is a littlestodgy, although the end of the book was very exciting. The sagabegins when a thirteen-year-old girl named Charlotte Doyle who leavesher home in Liverpool, England to go to Providence, Rhode Island inAmerica. The story takes place in 1832: a quaint old time for amurder you could say. Charlotte is riding on a boat called theSeahawk. The status of her trip was altered when the two families shewas to be riding with were unable to join her so her plans to havefriends aboard the ship were flawed. Charlotte now becomes the onlypassenger, not just that the only passenger but the only woman aboardthe boat. While aboard the ship she makes a friend with a crewmembernamed Zachariah. Zachariah pampers Charlotte by defending her in frontof the crew. He helps her and fosters her spirit throughout thebook. There is a captain who Charlotte finds very reputable in thebeginning. However, he turns into more of a "crazy Ct. Jaggery"than a Ct. Jaggery. The crew agrees with this title and the onlyreason they signed back on as crewmember is because they are all on aquest for vengeance after Ct. Jaggery. In this book Charlotte findsher independence in a highly unusual way. We feel that people of theages 10-14 would highly enjoy this book. Avi portrays athirteen-year-old girl very well and writes in a good sense that youcould understand how life was back in 1832. We found this book to bevery good and would highly recommend it to any person who likessuspenseful murder novels, filled with cliffhangers, and plenty ofmystery.
