Summary: Interseting novel which requires some analysis
Review: "The Chocolate War" is an interesting insight into the life of a young child forced into line by a mafia style school gang. It raises many questions about how safe students are in a school and how evil some people can be. However, one of the main characters, Archie, seems to be too evil to be real. Another main character, Jerry, is brave and seems to be very realistic in his depiction by Cormier. This novel shows how immoral some poeple can be in this world but seems too dark a future for the world. Many themes are raised including violence, evil and power and Cormier does a reasonable job in writing about teenage issues. Even though much analysis is required and a second reading is advised, this novel is good for study by high school aged students. A good read but nothing to write home about.

Summary: It's not reality
Review: I first read this when I was in 7th grade (8 years ago) and it did give me a more cynical view of the world. At the time, there had been few if any school shootings, bombings, and the like. I think when this book was written should be taken in consideration while reading. The book is an exaggeration or a dark farce about society and human nature. It deals with the pressures of grades and bowing down to the powerful kids and teachers on a power trip. These things do exist in schools and society and the book causes one decide who you are and who you would rather be. It's very honest and sobering.

Summary: Depressing? Yes but you need to be disillusioned. Believe me
Review: I first read this book when I was about 14 and it really changed my life, it makes you realise just how corrupt the world is when run for greedy purposes.I went to a girls' private school and many of the teachers were just as underhand as Brother Leon.

If you want a good laugh don't read this book, but if you want to try living in the real world give it a try. The sequel, beyond the chocolate war, is just as good.

Summary: A truely horribly book!
Review: i really didnt like this book. it was long, boring, and far fetched. i doubt every1 in a school can turn against a person cuz he didnt sell some boxes of chocolates. although it had a good theme -kill or be killed- it still stunk!

Summary: A Truly Wonderful Book!
Review: I really enjoyed reading this book even though it was kind of long. You can learn a great life lesson through reading this story because you learn that you must go along with everyone else or you must face the consequences. The saying, "Do I dare disturb the universe?" is important to the story's main idea because it asks the question if you should be a leader of a follower. I highly recommend reading this book.

Summary: Unforgettable
Review: It has been over ten years since I first read this book, and it has never completely left me. The story is compelling, the writing is poignant, and the characters are familiar and multidimensional. All in all, an unforgettable and timeless book.

Summary: Not as interesting as it seems
Review: In my honest opinion I'd have to say that this book is not all it's cracked up to be. Yes it shows strength of the characters but I think in reality that this would never happen. The whole story was basically boys calling boys stuff. And the plot of the story was over a chocolate sale. Underneath that there was a more "in-depth" plot but that hardly made sense at all. Friends supposedly not liking each other and turning on each other in a second. No that's not right. All in all I think this book was a waste of time, paper, and money.

Summary: Best Book Ever Written
Review: This is definitely the best book ever. The characterization is realistic and the depiction of the hardships of adolescence and high school is dead on. Cormier brilliantly details what the world gives to those who "dare disturb the universe" and shows that sometimes the good guy doesn't win.

A masterpiece of fiction. Not just for young adults. A book that should be read by everyone.

Summary: An atrocious waste of paper.
Review: CHOCOLATE WAR should, in my humble opinion, be heaved off a cliff for good. There's no wit, no heroes, no triumphs. It's black comedy with no laughs.

I fail to see how anybody could enjoy it, and even put it on a class reading curriculum like my school did.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Chilling and Truthful Book Most People Can Relate To
Review: The Chocolate War was a riveting and truthful tale about the Catholic Boys' School. Robert Cormier did an excellent job depicting the pressure of high school!
