Summary: delicious
Review: I really liked this book because being in school myself I can see that this book tells the complete truth about cliques and gangs and that what can start out as a group thing can wind up a rule for a gang.

Summary: It's not all about the chocolates!
Review: This review is going to sound so lame compared to all the others...

Okay, here's the story. In Trinity High School, the annual fund-raiser of selling chocolates has been altered a bit this year. This year there are to be 20000 chocolates to be sold, half of last year's amount. Jerry has been assigned by the Vigils to refuse to sell for 10 days. By the time 10 days pass, Jerry's still not selling the chocolates. Because of this little thing, students are getting all heated up. Students are threatening Jerry to get with the program and start selling or else. Don't underestimate this book. It's much more than selling, it's about power, mind games, feelings and all that. This is an excellent story. It was amazing how the author could capture all the feelings and details and personalities of the characters.

Summary: Good bud Disturbing
Review: I found this book to be very good bu also kind of disturbing. Unlike most people, I have not considered Jerry's story to be a "realistic" story but more of a "What if" story. What IF there where a group that rulled your school and could make you do anything like the vigils did. What if teachers like the cruel Brother had everyone in school under his little thumb. I find that very disturbing indeed. But this was a good story, well written and it get's you thinking. What of all of this acutally did happen?

Summary: Truly Moving
Review: After years of recommendations from teachers, I finally pickedup The Chocolate War to see what the big deal was. I could not put itdown. Until 5 AM this morning, I sat gripping the book, utterly lost in the characters and their actions. Even after I finished the book, I sat in a wondering amazement- Could such a thing happen? Cormier's novel is truly moving and definately thought provoking. Though slightly confusing in the beginning with mentions of The Vigil's, The Chocolate War quickly picks up pace, and along with it, the readers interest. In a world still dominated by conformity, this book chronicals one boys struggles to stand up for his own beliefs-even if it means retalliation from the society that dominates his school. Cormier has written a gripping novel that has surely earned it place in the history of great literature.

Summary: What rubbish!
Review: Beyond being grim and depressing, this book is dated and unrealistic. The number of reviewers that over-rate this book giving it 5 stars is alarming. They are out of touch with teenage boys completely if they think it is realistic and representative. It wasn't in the early 1970s and it isn't now. I would not recommend it to anyone - - there are too many truly good books out there to spend a moment reading this tripe.

Summary: The Chocolate War
Review: This book was a great book, written very well. Cormier described the feelings of Jerry, Archie, Obie, Goober, Leon, and all of the boys greatly: each boy had an individual and unique personality. This was a book with deep thoughts, yet the ending leaves you hanging. I think Cormier did a great job creating the Vigils and the assignments and the great cookie sale. I think he used a great use of descriptions and adjectives. Jerry was a strong character, Archie was a cruel villian. This was an excellent book. I do, though, recommend this book mainly to boys of the ages 14-16.

Summary: I just love this book
Review: No matter how many of my birthdays have passed since I first read this book, I still love it. How can you not fall in love with determined Jerry and the cold but intriguing Archie? I was eager to find out what would happen next throughout the whole book.

If you like this one, I suggest you try other Robert Cormier books because their all just as good as the last. Oh yes, and if you read this one, you MUST read "Beyond the Chocolate War" too. How can you not want to know what happens after?

Summary: Not the best but worth reading
Review: When I first began this book, I thought it was going to be all about Jerry, freshman football quarterback. To my suprise there were a cast of interesting characters to learn about. At the end of the book, I wanted to know more about Jerry. The book was a little dated but still written very well for todays young adults. Left me wanting to read the sequel book, someday.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Always A Classic
Review: "The Chocolate War" is a wonderful book. Cormier is a master of dialogue and characterization. One really cares about what happens to Jerry, and the switching of view points from one character to another is something that, when not handled with skill, can cost a book it's readability. Cormier handles it very well, and the device becomes a welcome one. Seeing things from the point of view or Archie and Obie and others as well as the protagonist Jerry makes for interesting reading, and while the content has been judged as controversial by many a book-banner, overall it is truly worth reading. If you're looking for a compelling look at the "inner lives of boys", look no further.

Summary: The chocolate War
Review: This book was GREAT!.As a teenager it's fairly difficult tofind a good book that suits my personality, but The Chocolate Wars wasan amazing book. The language was a little strong so it wouldn't be suitable for little kids!. This story is about a group of boys that go to an All-boy school, every year they sell chocolates to the community, but Jerry Renault would not sell the chocolates, as a result he has to face the harsh reality of high school and not fitting in. I would definitly recommand this book to people who like Realistic-Fiction stories , and are always ready for a suprise.Enjoy the book!
