Summary: Sequel to The Outsiders is outstanding
Review: This book, which has some of the same characters from The Outsiders, such as Ponyboy Curtis, is a great read. I read this book in practically one sitting it was so good. I don't think this book is as good as the first one, but it still is a great book. The main characters, such as Byron, Cathy, Mark, and M&M, really kept me captivated and kept me wanted to read on. This book deals woith some serious issues, such as drugs, fighting, and betrayal between friends. I honestly couldn't believe it when Byron told on his almost brother, Mark for what he did. In the end, Mark, Byron's former soul brother, ends up in jail. The books end is so sad, with Byron not really caring about anyone, and Mark hating him while he's in jail. It is for all these interesting plot twists, and captivating chracter conflicts that make this this book so interesting that you don't want to stop reading it. This book is a must-have, for anyone looking for a great read.

Summary: this is now it will always be
Review: For her second novel Hinton let's the focus of her acute observations of troubled teenage life slide from class envy and gang warfare to drug abuse and the influence of the counterculture at the height of Vietnam. Bryon Douglas and his adopted brother Mark have been best friends since they were kids and family ever since Mark's parents shot each other in a drunken argument. When they're not at school they occupy themselves by hustling pool at the local bar, going to beer blasts, participating in street fights, hot-wiring cars, dating chicks, and running up and down a two lane strip called "The Ribbon" where all the kids hangout and socialize. But their friendship starts to crumble after Bryon meets the girl of his dreams, and after he and Mark hustle a couple of Texas toughs at a pool game that ends in a violent confrontation. The girl, Cathy, brings to fore Bryon's jealousy as well as his frightening ability to hurt the people he loves most simply because he cannot handle their pain and emotional turmoil or wrong-headed decisions (despite the fact that he himself makes such decisions and causes everyone a lot of suffering) and thus strikes out at anyone who wounds his soul. Cathy's brother M&M gives Bryon another reason to despair as the little guy is drawn to the hippie lifestyle and enters a world of peace, love, and the horrors of drug abuse. Once the book develops these themes it ends on an excruciating thud of hopelessness with only the barest hint on any light. Anyone who wants to read a book with a happy ending should beware: "THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW" has appealing characters (even Ponyby Curtis from "THE OUTSIDERS" makes a cameo appearance), and a great eye for evoking street life and the mingling, day-to-day hubbub of kids on the go, but it's also brutal, violent, filled with deadpan realism, emotionally claustrophobic, and psychologically penetrating. HARSH LANGUAGE: about 17 words, VIOLENCE: about 13 scenes, SEXUAL REFERENCES: about 5 instances.

I think the book just shows you how good you have it these days. And how lucky you are. The thing that I didnt like about the book is that it was to short.
