Rating: Summary: not happy Review: We read this book in a book club of 9 year old girls and their moms. Most of us rated it between a .5 and a 3. I did not think my 9 year old needed to read about the kind of violence and vulgarity and overall rudenes (not to mention the all out swearing) that was on a majority of pages. I wouldn't have minded some of the negativity if it had been wrapped up neat at the end into an obvious moral. I would not recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Have You ever seen someone who deserves more respect Review: In this book called Blubber by Judy Blume, Linda is a girl who doesn't get a lot of respect because she is sort of fat. The main character (Jill) makes fun of her and she calls her Blubber and makes her say stuff like I am Blubber and other things. This book shows how her life is and how Jill might get to know Linda.
Rating: Summary: We all don't like to be made fun of! Review: Jill is a girl who (with others) picks on this girl Linda because of her wieght. Judy Blume shows how the saying "treat others the way you would like to be treated." And Jill doesn't. And it backfires to her. She doesn't like it one bit either. Maybe she should of listened to her mother's advise? It's a hilarious story, with lots of funny plots! And I recomend it!
Rating: Summary: Shocked and disappointed Review: I am a nine year old girl who tried to read this book, but could only make it to chapter 5 because I was so upset with the story. The characters do awful things to Linda and are not sorry about it. The story is sad and mean, and I am very disappointed in the book. I'm surprised Judy Blume would write this kind of story. There even was a swear word on page 30 that I showed my mom. She was very surprised that Judy Blume would put this in a book meant for 9 to 12 year old kids. I will not be finishing this book. It would be a waste of my time.
Rating: Summary: We all grew up with a Linda and a Wendy. Review: I liked the meaning behind the writing. I was called names, was one of the last ones picked and waited by the door for recess to be over. This booked showed how cruel kids can be. It did not show apologies or comeuppance because that is rarely done in real life--even if the shoe is on the other foot. When Jill does stand up to Wendy and after a while breaks up other friendships by pointing out that Wendy was a user--I felt Jill didn't learn her lesson. Jill just went on and found someone else to be a lunch partner and class trip friend. I felt sorry for Linda because she ended up being alone again at the end of the book. I always thought the book was left hanging because I always wondered if they would of started teasing Linda where they left off.
Rating: Summary: Blubber Review: I think this book was very good. It was also very funny, like when three girls put another girl in a closet and put her on trial. It was so good I couldn't put it down. One night I was up till 12 o'clock in the morning reading it. I think it was the best book I've ever read. You should read this book it will give you hours of enjoyment.
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK! Review: I have read this book and many other JUDY BLUME books when I was growing up. I think this is a great book for a child. Growing up as an overweight child I knew what it felt like to be teased and was able to relate to the character in this book. I found these books very helpful. When my children are old enough to read them I will gladly provide them.
Rating: Summary: One of the ten must-read books of adolescence Review: I can remember reading this over and over, feeling outraged at the injustice present in the social hierarchy of middle and high school. While this book is humorous, it also has a deep and relevant message about the difficulties we all went through (or will go through) as we enter adolescence. I think everyone should have a copy of this book- Judy Blume really knows her stuff!
Rating: Summary: A realistic look at bullying and peer pressure. Review: Kids can be cruel. It's a cliche, but it most certainly has some truth behind it. And no author better portrayed the mentality behind bullying better than Judy Blume did in "Blubber." The protaganist of "Blubber", Jill, is just an average girl who joins her class in the persecution of an overweight girl, Linda. She goes along with this persecution because she wants to fit in with her classmates and because of the sheer "fun" of it. It's real life, and anyone who has experienced Junior High School will recognize this vicious cycle of bullies, follow-the-leaders, and victims. This is not a sitcom. There is no contrived happy ending or clear-cut victory for anyone. Linda is not a particularly likeable character. The ringleader of the bullies, Wendy, never gets her comeuppence. It's real life. Bullies get away with being creeps, and not every victim is a wonderful person. "Blubber" is a disturbing, but honest book.
Rating: Summary: Quite Disappointing Review: I am a big fan of Judy Blume.....or so I thought. This story was very disturbing and made me somewhat uncomfortable reading. The plot was pointless and the cruelty expressed by the characters was exaggerated. Quite a disappointment from Ms. Blume.
