Summary: This was one of the best books I've ever read!
Review: The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander (the set of five books that includes this one as the last in the series) were part of my "reading list" when I entered fifth grade. Thank goodness the first book had a good cover, or else I would have never been drawn into the series that changes my life! I ended up reading the whole series, but the last book, the High King, was the one that affected me the most by far. I was left crying at its end the fist time I read it, and I cry every time I read it even today, four years later. Before I read the series, I didn't enjoy books. Now, I am a book monger and want to be a writer some day. It's difficult to believe that books work miracles, but this one came reaallyy really close! In case you can't tell, this an order to READ THE BOOK TODAY!

Summary: A great ending to a great series
Review: The High King caps off an amazing series. It wraps up the events of the previous Prydian books. It will bring you moments of tears and joy, and you experience tragedy, and ultimately, are brought to the heights of triumph. After completing The High King, one cannot help but sigh that the adventures of Taran and the Companions are over; they will only continue in our hearts. Mr. Alexander, if you ever get to read this, I just want to say: "Thank you."

Summary: Blah.
Review: This book, THE HIGH KING, had its moments, but its author allowed little thought toward his reader's conception of it. Its characters were not believable; they were of the stoic and inhumane sort. The story ended itself before it had a chance to begin, and it was a bad way to end any series: Taran's friends leaving him to go off to Utopialand. Sappy.

Summary: Beautiful conclusion to an excellent series
Review:
I've loved Lloyd Alexander's classic series ever since I read "The Book of Three" in elemantary school. A well-chosen Christmas gift from my parents ensured that I got my hands on the next four books, concluding with "The High King".

One of the strengths of this series is that the characters learn and grow from one book to the next; it's great to see Taran from "The Book of Three", who reminds me rather of myself at that age (*grin*) grow up to take the responsibilities he has earned by the end of "The High King".

Alexander's use of Welsh mythology is excellent and for the most part right on target, though Arawn isn't quite as malevolent a figure in myth as he is in the Chronicles of Prydain, and the Gwydion of the Mabinogion is as much a trickster as he is a hero. (This isn't really a criticism; these are books for children, and I know that making Arawn and Gwydion more ambiguous characters would have confused me when I was younger.) The Triple Goddess, the people of Twylyth Teg, the people of Llyr--they're all here, forming a seamless and very real-feeling backdrop to the main characters' adventures.

Older readers may be interested in checking out the Mabinogion, the main body of Welsh myth that has survived the ages, after finishing this series. Gwyn Thomas and Kevin Crossley-Holland's "Tales from the Mabinogion" is an excellent edition to try, with beautiful illustrations.

Overall, the Chronicles of Prydain remain among my favorite stories, with "The High King" the best of the lot. I highly recommend them.

Summary: Great story with a little bit of everything.
Review: I have read many fantasy books and these ones are my favorite next to Tolkein. I couldn't believe how people call this a "childs book." If you are one of those people give this book a try and maybe you will think different. This book has everything Romance, tragedy, adventure and irony. *CONGRADULATIONS* Mr Alexander for writing this great book.

Summary: Taran must prove himself to Prydain
Review: The best book of the Prydain series. Taran must retrieve Dyrnwyn from the the evil Arwyn. Dollie is still being spiteful, Taran is confused, and Gurgi is still silly. A wonderful book for all ages, and a great ending to the series. A must read for the adventerer in all of us.

Summary: My favorite book, even better than Les Miserables!
Review: Wow. I've read many diverse books in my (relatively short) life and each time I think one is the best, I keep going back to this book and thinking "Nothing could compare to Mr. Alexander." If you haven't read it yet, then I suggest you do so immediately!! ;) Just look at all the "10's" that people have given it!!

Summary: very touching and sad story
Review: no one has mentioned the anguish the reader feels when fflewder burns his treasure. It reminds me of Hans Christian Anderson's the steadfast tin soldier. I could cry just thinking about it!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A beautiful, if sad, conclusion to Taran's adventures.
Review: In The High King Taran, our likeable hero, finds out that the Black Sword, Dyrnwyn, has been stolen and goes on a thrilling adventure filled with fear, some mystery (Hen Wen's prophecy), and romance. It's ending, though leaving Prydain safe, is somewhat sad, but many books must be sad, just like life is sad, so despite a sore heart I ADORED, and still adore, this book. Mr. Alexander's Arawn Death Lord has an evil in him to make any reader's heart thump with fear and scowl with hate.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Best book ever!
Review: I have read over 200 books in all of those books this is the best one. All of the books in the series are wonderful! The High King Is fast paced and has a great story. Every time I read it I have to smile and I think everyone should read this wonderful book!
