Rating: Summary: I have read many great books, but this is still my favorite! Review: I'm 16 years old right now, and through my English classes, I'm reading all the classics and favorites. I've gone through Shakespeare, Charles Dickins, Homer, Ibsen, Harper Lee, and so many more. But from my experience, The Ruby in the Smoke is still my favorite, even though I read it when I was 13. The begginning was confusing and boring, but once I got into it, it was like watching a really good movie. I think that you are missing out on a lot if you skip this book.
Rating: Summary: The Best Victorian Thriller Ever! Review: Anyone who wants a terrific female heroine, dirty villians, a precious mystical gem, and a charming boyfiend in a 1800 London mystery, you've come to the right place. This book has everything, and was written by my favorite author. :)
Rating: Summary: Great book, well written Review: The story was not only well written, but intriguing as well. I enjoyed this book so much that I went on to read the others in this trilogy. Read It!
Rating: Summary: Very nicely done.... Review: Everything was very well written, but it does not go in depth with every issue; so that leaves me sort of confused. The first five chapters were incredible!, but as it got further, it got boring and it sort of got off the subject. The Sally Lockhart triology is amazing! But this one is one I don't reccomend. "Shadow in the North" and "The Tiger in the Well" is what Pullman's work was meant to be.
Rating: Summary: One Totally Awesome Book! Review: "The Ruby In The Smoke" is a way cool thriller. Most of my friends have read it and we all agree: This is one book everyone must read! Sally Lockhart is determined to solve the mystery of who killed her father and why. She meets two people she can really trust, Fred and Jim.They help her but there are still surprises around every corner and dangers at every turn.I'm 12.
Rating: Summary: This is a wonderful book! Review: This book is very suspenseful and detailed. Every character relates to at least one other character in some way. I would reccomend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: *YAWN* Is it over yet?! Review: I really didn't like this book because it was sooooooo boring!! For the first 18 chapters, nothing happened. All the author did was babble on and on and on about unimportant things. And, there was too much violence. I couldn't wait for it to end so I could write the BORING book report and then never think about it again!!
Rating: Summary: I love this book! Review: I personally believe that this is one of the best books I ever read. It ranks up there with Pullman's other books.
Rating: Summary: A keeper - here's proof Review: It's been nearly ten years since I first read this book... I'm 22 now, and it remains one of my favorites. Pullman tells the story of a desperate teenage girl's search for the truth about her father's death without pulling any punches or talking down to his audience (which is probably between the ages of twelve and fifteen or so); there are allusions to sex and violence, but they are not explicitly descriptive. The novel's mystery is intricate and pervasive, but almost as important to its texture is the look we are given at how several lonely and unhappy people become a family for each other, even in the face of danger and loss. Sally Lockhart is a wonderful protofeminist heroine, whose bravery, intelligence, and independence should inspire most readers; the secondary characters, such as Fred and Jim, are charming and more than up to the challenge of being Sally's associates. The conclusion is stunning, and readers who enjoy this novel will want to read the other books about Sally and her friends (Shadow in the North is particularly heartrending). I find the Sally books generally more emotionally-involving than _His Dark Materials_, but the high quality of the writing remains constant. I still make a point of picking up Pullman's newest books when they come out, and _The Ruby in the Smoke_ is the book that started it all.
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE BEST HISTORICAL FICTION NOVELS I HAVE EVER READ!! Review: I thought that this was a great book about London in the late 1800's. Sally was a great heroine, and the rest were cool, too. This book tells a not totally unrealistic story, and I personally thought that it was better than The Golden Compass. The other books in the trilogy are great, also. I believe that this is a must-read for any historical fiction or Pullman fan. It was great!!
