Summary: Night Shade
Review:
Lynne Ewing's Night Shade (Volo, 2001) is the third book in a series of four books. Ewing's writing style is clever and engaging. When reading the book, the reader would never know it was the third book because there are no time gaps in her writing. She explains everything as if the reader is reading each book for the first time. The writing goes back and forth between Spanish phrases and English phrases, making the reader believe the character is real by having Jimena speak both languages. The series is about the Daughters of the Moon and their gifts to fight the Followers of the evil Atrox.
Night Shade is about one specific daughter of the moon whose gift is seeing into the future. Jimena is an ex-gang member of the ninth street gang in Los Angeles. She was a chola (a female gang member) that was feared by all gangs and people who knew of her reputation. She has to call on the skills of being in a gang to defeat Cassandra, a Follower of the Atrox. Cassandra wants her power and uses Jimena's boyfriend Veto to try and get it. She lives in fear of her premonitions because she knows she has never been able to change the future. When she learns of the premonition of her friends and her own death, she has to reach deep in herself and find the courage to overcome the fear. Jimena has to learn to believe in her friends and herself to be able to defeat the evil Followers and especially Cassandra.

Truly, I picked up the book because it was in Los Angeles, even though I did not really care for the main character being able to see into the future or her friends and their special power. However, it was a story of living in fear and finding hope. Jimena lived in fear because she could not stop what she could see happening. Plus, she did not want to go back to the life she had been living before she realized she was a daughter of the moon. Once she took her off her amulet of the moon, she thought everything was lost.
She found hope by believing in herself and being able to trust her friends. She had to realize that she did not have to stand alone and face the evil Atrox. She had friends, the other daughters of the moon, to help her face her fears as well as defeat Cassandra and the other Followers. She did have to learn on her own, that not everything is as it appears. I would like to read the other books in the series as well.

Summary: Jimena's Story
Review: After the death of Veto, and after she learns her true destiny, Jimena tries to rebuild her life, leaving the world of gangs far behind her. Now, a year after Veto's death, and Veto suddenly shows up, Jimena thinks that she just created him with her imagination. Then Jimena has a premonition of Veto either embracing Cassandra, or Cassandra pushing Veto away. Now Jimena knows that Veto is being used as a shade (book explains it). Then, Jimena is tricked into taking off her moon amult, and giving it to Veto, and her powers are stolen from her by Cassandra, who made a deal with the Inner Circle (again, the book will explain) to go back in time to change one event. And now that Cassandra has Jimena's power, she has a premonition of Jimena bringing the Daughters of the Moon to (I guess you can call it) hell. Since Jimena's premonitions always came true, will this one of Cassandra's come true to?

I really liked this book. It made learn to like Jimena a little bit more, but I can't wait to get the next one, because that book is Catty's book, and Catty is my favorite character.

Summary: Good but still not as good as into the cold fire.
Review: Before I read this book I used to not like jamena, but now I see things from her point of view. and now I see her trubuled past and how she transformed from gangster homegirl to Goddes of the moon. I was totaly fooled thinking that Veto was o folower! But still book # 2 was a lot bettr or maybe its just that sarena is a more likeible charicter or mabe its just that stanton(my fave. charictor) wasnt in it much And now hes mising no! but you cant just skip a book in a series so read it and one thing I noticed is that i n the proulouge ms.ewing talks about the goddes diana and the god apollo but apollo was greek and diana was roman the correct name would be artemis.

Summary: Jimena follows her heart straight to Tartarus.
Review: Before Jimena Castillo found out about her true identity, she was part of a gang and considered the toughest chola in East L.A. But after finding her true identity as a Daughter of the Moon and why she has the power to see into the future, she started to rebuild her life. Everything was going pretty good until the love of her life, Veto, came back to her. The problem with this is that Veto has been dead for a year. Veto claims that he has been alive the entire time, but Vanessa, Serena, and Catty, the other three Daughters of the Moon, think he is working for the evil Atrox. Jimena insists that they are wrong. But when her love for Veto leads her to Tartarus, a dark abyss below Earth's surface, will she be able to fight the anger in her heart or will she give into it? If she does give into her anger she will make the Atrox so powerful that even the Daughters of the Moon would be unable to stop it. This book was a great addition to the Daughters of the Moon series, and if you liked the first two you should definitely read this one.

Summary: Jimena has to face a familliar figure from her past
Review: Everyone knows Jimena as one of the must stubborn and bravest members of the daughters of the moon, but in this book we learn how she got her bravery. Before Jimena found out she was a Goddess she was one of the toughest girls in a gang. Everyone was afraid of her and she knew it. But now that she's shed her bad girl past, a famillar face is comign back to haunt her. It's Veto, a long lost dead boyfriend from her past. What is Veto? Is he real? Did he ever die? Is he back for good? Or is he just an evil tool of the atrox set out to destroy the goddesses. Jimena dosen't know but she's about to find out.

Like the last two books in the series Night shade is exciting and a page turner. I toatally reccomend this book for fans of the series and the supernatural. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, The Secret Scroll, which stars Catty.

Summary: Why do people like these books?
Review: From its purple cover of a model attempting the standard 'bad-girl' smirk, complete with wrist guards that make her look like she's off to a superhero party, to the poorly conceived story and messy, cliche-ridden narrative, this book is appallingly bad.

The premise of 'Daughters of the Moon' is that young girls who are delievered by the goddess Diana are infused with magical powers that they must use against the ancient evil Atrox and his various minions. It's the girl-power meets evil-bashing type of book, a ploy that usually works, but in this case does not thanks to the author's poor writing skills and limited imagination.

Lynne Ewing flaunts her ignorance of the subject material as early as the prologue, where she recounts the myth of Diana and Apollo, seemingly unaware that Diana was a Roman goddess and Apollo was a Greek one. This lack of research continues to the scene where the girls are having a tarot card reading and all gasp in horror when the death card is revealed. Never mind that the death card is symbolic of often positive transformation, one of them takes it as a sign she's about to break up with her boyfriend.

Jimena herself makes a surprisingly stupid protagonist - instead of questioning why her boyfriend Veto is suddenly back from the dead, she quite happily goes along with it, not even raising suspicions when he breaks into her apartment in the middle of the night. Later on she warns herself two times not to go to the park to meet Cassandra, only to do exactly that and think to herself - "too late Jimena knew that she had been overly eager to meet Cassandra in the park."
The 'goddesses' themselves are fairly boring stereotypes: Serena is the leader, Jimena is the bad girl, Catty is the shy one, and Vannessa is the backup. Most character development and characterisation seems to be based on clothing, that Ewing goes to great lengths to describe. So, here goes:
Minions of evil will be most interested in 'a stretchy black capris with a low-cut black tank top and too much silver jewelry' or 'a skimpy black dress and shiny black boots'. Forces of good however, go for the brighter look, such as: 'red cowboy boots and a lacy sundress,' 'a pink slip dress and beaded slides' or 'a split tube top that showed off the piercing in her belly button and a pink hip-hugging skirt with an asymmetrical hem'. For special crime-fighting occasions, like staking out the park for example, lean towards the choices of 'a slinky one-shoulder black dress with a plunging neckline and a beaded gold belt', 'a halter top with a split up the middle' or an 'iridescent hot green mini'. Finally, for the final showdown with your arch-nemesis, attention to your outfit is of utmost importance. Try this: 'A blue halter top and black jeans...glitter lotion and painted black lines on her eyelids'. For the finishing touch, all you need is for your unexperienced friend to tattoo a moon on your arm with ink and a needle. Watch out for that pesky blood poisoning though!

And as for the book's narrative, I believe some direct quotes will speak for themselves -
"She yearned for the sweet kind of love she had known with him"

"He reminded her of a lizard, the way his beady eyes darted up and down her body with frank sexual interest."

And my personal favourite: "If this is true, it is very bad for us because it means that she has come up with an evil plan".

If nothing else, at least this book kept me laughing. No doubt this review will be bogged down with 'no helpful' votes from all the other reviewers who adore this book, (with a doubt eight-to-thirteen year old girls) but if you happen to be on the look out for good reading material and have stumbled across this page, then move along, nothing to see here...

Summary: Good Story
Review: I enjoyed this book more than the first two I think because there was more going on with Veto and Jimena and a lot with the Daugthers. There were twists and turns that I didn't expect and I like more about going to the underworld and how Jimena does so much to protect Veto and save him from the Atrox. I wanted a different ending because I liked Veto so much even though he was bad but it was still good and I recommend it.
