Summary: An excellent debut from Carolyn Mackler
Review: I am a teenager living in a 32 year old woman's body, and I still appreciate these stories just as much as I did back in the 80's when I was a teen.
This book is so true to life. I think a lot of girls can relate to the main character, Sammie Davis. She faces a lot of challenges and obstacles that I think almost every teenaged girl faces. It's sort of a fish of water/coming of age story that is wonderfully written by the new fresh voice of Carolyn Mackler. -- What a writer! I also read this cuz I am trying to be a writer myself and this is my genre.
The characters are all so real and true to life. It's almost as if they just jump off the page and into your lap while you are reading. I highly recommend this novel for all teen girls, and for those teens at heart. It's the kind of story that really grabs you right away and you don't want to put it down til you are finished.
I got it out of the library, but I think it is worth buying.

Summary: Fairly good story but lacking any true sparkle
Review: Carolyn Mackler's first novel LOVE AND OTHER FOUR-LETTER WORDS is a good book to curl up in bed with and read in one sitting. It's pretty short, and the writing is quite light, but the story is a alright, and one which probably any teenage girl will be able to relate to in at least some sense.
Sammie's life is turned upside down when her summer agenda goes from a family trip to California to having to deal with her parents undergoing a "trial separation." Her dad goes to California by himself, while Sammie and her mother move into a tiny NYC apartment. Sammie is forced to deal with situations which in the end will not only wind up alright, but allow her to grow as a person as well.

All that might sound a bit cliche, but Mackler manages to breath originality into the story of a teenager having to deal with their parent's separation, and the result is a fairly good book. I can totally relate to Sammie's uncertainty about what the next day will bring, slight resentment that guys hang on her best friend but hardly ever seem to notice Sammie herself, and also with her conflicts with her mother.

The main reason that I gave this book 3 stars is that, though I enjoyed it while I was reading it, it's just not four- or five-star material. The writing isn't incredible, and the story somewhat cliched, though, as I said, Carolyn Mackler does do a good job of breathing new life into it. I also don't think much of the ending. There are ambiguous endings, and then there are endings that simply lack closure. I'm inclined to say that the ending of LOVE AND OTHER FOUR-LETTER WORDS is of the latter type, which isn't the best thing in the world. Another thing which brought the rating down was that though I can relate to some of the things that Sammie had to deal with, she didn't really come alive for me while I was reading this book, and, except for Pheobe, none of the other characters did either. They remained throughout the book quite generic, with very few sparkles.

So, in conclusion, I have to say that though I enjoyed this book while I was reading it, it didn't really stay with me after I was done, and it is hardly one which I will read again any time soon. I would recommend this book to teenage girls who are not looking for a very complicated book. Peace...

Summary: Disappointing
Review: This book was very disappointing. It was way too on the "surface" and there was no character development. It didn't provoke any emotions and it was basically just a chick flick.

Summary: Love and Other Four Letter Words-a great book!
Review: I bought this book maybe 2 months ago and I've read it maybe 20 times! This book is never boring. I loved it! Sammie is a character I completely understand with her love of music, overbearing best friend, loveable dog-loving new friend, and innocent crushes. Sammie Davis is moved out of small town America to NYC with her mother, who she doesn't understand, due to her parents' trial separation. Sammie learns to deal with life in the big city, meeting new people, running the household, new crushes, and learning to back away from an abusive friend. Sammie faces adult problems (such as having food in the house and taking care of her mother who continues to have a sort of nervous breakdown) and teen problems (such as dealing with a friend who takes too much and getting a crush to notice her). She is a strong willed, believeable character. A must read!

Summary: I wudn't use this book to wipe my ass with....
Review: i didnt read this book past the first chapter until i decided to throw it away in the trash where it belonged! this abomination was written by a second-grader! no type of style, or realistic characters, no detailed discriptions. nothing, nada. "jack wants me to give him a blow job" said Kitty, is just about as interesting as it gets, and thats not saying much...the writting is so superficial and shallow..i bet "blondiebuttercup" wrote it.(air-head, bubble-gum-cracking bimbo material). warning: this novel may cause severe headaches and damage to the brain. stay. away. from. this. book!

Summary: Um....Trash?
Review: wow..what can i say about this book...? lifeless character. and JD??? he had nothing to do w/ the story. You couldn't relate to the saddness of her parent's break up at all....horrible book. the only good thing about it was that it wasn't boring.

Summary: Nice title, nice work.
Review: I'm a sucker for good titles so as expected this was no different. My judging a book by its cover (and title) got me into deep shades of utter boredom in the past. However, thankfully, this one wasn't dreadful.

Love and Other Four-Letter Words is one of those multi-problemed teenage stories. Problems in family, friends, crushes, and getting a high-kick in hormones is ever present. Tackled pretty good even with the occasional teenagers-can-only-understand references.

Although this is not to get all worked up, I enjoyed the book and am certain many out there will, too.

Summary: You gotta love the title...
Review: ...and you gotta love the story. And the characters...and the quirky ideas, like posing as magazine interns to get photos with guys...and classifying people as dog breeds...and describing people as "crunchy granola"...and more. This is an excellent book...

Summary: Love and other four letter reviews.
Review: Its really a great book. Its not like a normal narration of the sidekick to the most popular girl in school because she's not as cynical as voices in princess diaries, etc. I enjoyed this book a lot while reading it and related to it on several levels. I loved this book.
