Summary: Teenager struggling for survival
Review: Parrot in the Oven is a book I would definitely recommend to all readers. The author talks about a variety of issues of great importance in today's society. Victor Martinez is a Mexican-American author who focuses on his Mexican culture. Mr. Martinez's novel received a National book award.

He talks about a dysfunctional Chicano family. He makes it interesting because he's very detailed in his context. All the examples he gives are very realistic and interesting. For example, the protagonist is a fourteen year old boy who is growing up in the projects. He mentions all the struggles this boy needs to go through before he can find himself. Personally I think this book was very straightforward and easy to relate to the characters in the novel because he talks about an alcoholic father, an unstable mother and confused teenagers. I though it was amazing to see how one person can struggle for survival and affection and at the end look back and find a simple solution for happiness.

I will not say more because I would like for everyone who is considering reading this book to not take another minute and check it out from your nearest library or bookstore. Like I said, I think it was a great book to read because the author did such a great job with the analysis.

Summary: A great novel
Review: My name is Rigoberto Mariscal. I recently read this book in my Literature class. I'm writing this paper to evaluate this novel called "Parrot in the Oven " written by Victor Martines. And I would give you an idea of my point of view about the kind of book I'm reading, so you can figure out what this book is about.
Fourteen-years old Many Hernandes or Manuel Hernandes wants to be a Vato Loco, the kind of guy people respect. But that's not easy because of the problems with his family, his father was too abusive, his brother cant hold a job, and his mother scrubs the house as if she can wash her troubles away. It was hard because of what the father thought about his son. His father believed people were like money for example he said, you cowl be a thousand dollar person or a hundred dollar person even a ten. Below that, every person was just nickels and dimes that was what the father thought about other people but let me tell you about what he thought about his family. To him his son's were simple pennies, yes as I say, simple pennies. Manuel's father was a bad person that just like to drink and make problems. I agree with Manuel's personality because as the story say's tried to be a good person with smart ideas, but with a lot of family problems and that's when the phrase, " Parrot in the Oven " takes his meaning because of the kind of life Manuel's had. For his mother and his sisters cleaning the house what the worK of everyday meaning their future and the cleanness possible. If I give my judgment of rating for this novel I will give a nine, because there are some part's I don't agree with and I think the rest of this novel is perfect for a person who has problems because it explain you how the problems of Manuel were developing on his adolescence and it make you feel like if you were on the novel's role.

Summary: Well written book. I just didn't enjoy it
Review: "Parrot in the Oven" is a pretty good book that sets out to portray life in the Barrio. The action follows a high school underclassman, Manny, as he meanders through life. There really is no climax in this book; it is a collection of stories, told chronologically and revolving around the same family. Martinez's biggest success in this novel is creating a sense of apathy. The title, "Parrot in the Oven" is to remind the reader of a fable in which a parrot is thinking to itself how hot it is in the shade, not realizing he's in an oven. While the main character is by no means stupid (as the fable implies), he is disturbingly apathetic. The reader clearly sees Manny in dangerous and destructive situations and becomes frustrated when he simply "goes with the flow," and this, I believe, is the reaction Martinez is looking for.

In the opinion of this reader, flaws exist in the book, however. While Martinez succeeds in creating a mood of apathy, I feel the book would have been more memorable if he presented some possible solutions to the problems of barrio life. Furthermore, while the marketers call this a "coming of age novel," I would disagree because Manny is too static for me to say that he went through a change. Finally, while there is a lot of anit-white talk in the novel, the reason behind the racism is not explained. If Martinez is going attempt to portray reality in his noven and have so many of his male characters bash whites, I would at least like it if he were to have a character attempt to explain Latino racism. None of the characters do this, which does a dis-service to all races reading the book.

Summary: Parrot In The Oven
Review: Manny Hernandez is a fourteen-year-old boy who is struggling in life to become someone. As hard as he tries it's hard for him because he has to live with an alcoholic father, worried mother, annoying sister and his older brother who can't get a job anywhere (and when he does get a job he loses it instantly). In Manny's neighborhood it's not easy to become someone, especially if you're a good kid like Manny. In the neighborhood he lives in you have to be in a gang to be known. The gangs around there are serious law breaking gangs. Most of the kids in the gangs steal old ladies purses, rob grocery stores, and steal cars. Manny is more of a nice guy that would never hurt a fly (not really gang material).
In this story Manny has to experience many stressful events. Manny is beat up by kids at school, his sister is having problems with her pregnancy that none knows about, his mother worries about his dad and the family all the time, and both his brother and father are gone from the house day and night drinking. Over time Manny learns to deal with these events but not easily. Manny tries many different solutions. He tried joining the boxing team but that didn't work, he tried hanging out with older kids to try to make new friends but that didn't work and he tried to join a gang but that was the worst of them all. I will let you find out what happens to Manny yourselves. Enjoy!

Summary: Fly Parrot!
Review: Manny Hernandez, a Mexican-American boy growing up in Fresno, California searches for his way in life. He has a father, semi-respectable who loves to hang out in a pool hall. He has a brother Nardo who would rather have life handed to him instead of working toward something. Manny wants to find a better way, a way with hard work, dreams of baseball and girls. Gangs don't give him the answers he's looking for, luckily. Great book for teenagers and beyond.
