Rating: Summary: A wonderful book which explains the Pakistani culture Review: This book is a wonderful book which explains the Pakistani culture. It is about an eleven year old girl named Shababnu who lives in the desert with her family as nomads. Her sister, Phulan is engaged with a boy. Shabanu is also going to be engaged when she is old enough. But a wealthy landowner ruins the marrage plans of her sister. So now both girls have to marry someone else. Shabanu does not like the boy she is going to marry, but she must uphold the family honor. This book tells about the tragic losses she must face, so now she must make the right choice, to either follow her heart or to uphold the family honor. If you are going to read this book, i suggest you do. It may not be the best book, but it gives you a taste of how hard her nomad life is, and the culture she is brought up in. And be sure to check out the sequel to this book: Haveli

Rating: Summary: Diana's Review Review: This book is about a twelve year-old Muslim girl in Cholistan who is growing up. She is forced to marry a man that her parents choose. This story made me think about what it would be like to be a young, female Muslim and about what it would be like to have your parents choose a husband for you. This was an interesting book with an ending that totally surprised me!
Rating: Summary: Review Review: Shabanu by Suzanne Fisher Staples is a slow moving book about a Muslim girl's life. It talks about camel trips in an overly descriptive way, but the 240-page book isn't that bad. Although the book can get boring in places, some parts are very interesting. The story has fighting; little jokes here and there, romance, and tragedy. Shabanu is a girl of the desert, whose family wanders from place to place. Shabanu means daughter of the wind. She lives with a sister Phulan, a Mama, a Dadi, and an Auntie. They have a lot of camels, but her favorite is Guluband. In a year she is supposed to marry Murad. This is how the story starts, but tragedy has yet to strike. Shabanu is more manly the feminine. In fact, she goes on an 8-day camel trip with her dad to the Sibi Fair. At the Sibi Fair, people from all over come and exchange animals, food, and many other things. It is sort of like a street fair. At this fair, her Dadi makes a lot of money, but they must sell Guluband. Shabanu tries to stop him, but it is too late. She feels sad she doesn't have Guluband, but she feels she will get by. In my opinion, this scene has action and tragedy, which is helpful for a good book. The loss of her camel is nothing compared to what you will read. She has decisions to make and the book takes unexpected turns. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what happens because that would give the story away. All I can say is Shabanu won't be happy. This Newbery Honor Book can definitely be boring because of the slow moving pace, but it also has some exciting parts. In my opinion this is a pretty good book which has a little bit of everything. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read stories about young girl's lives.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I love this book and it's sequel Haveli. While I was reading reviews on this book, I noticced that some people think that this book is innapropriate for middle schoolers. I am in 7th grade, but I read Shabanu and Haveli in 5th grade. Who cares if there are some sexuall comments? middle schoolers should know about these types of things. Those certain comments are also neccesary to the story because Shabanu is worrying about her upcoming marriage. I think Staples does a great job of potraying Shabanu's feelings. I think it would be a real bummer to get married so young.

Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: This book is about a girl. It vividly portrays the customs and traditions of the Muslim nomadic people. Young Shabanu lives in a world where customs are very key to her lifestyle. She has more freedom than most girls had. This book is constantly full of mesmorizing twists and emotional scenes. Shabanu goes through many changes physically and emotionally as she learns from her heart. She is faced with many challenges, the most important challenge is not resolved at the end of the book. I cried for hours after reading the unique book.
