Summary: Don't judge this book by it's cover!
Review: Have you ever heard the saying don't judge a book by its cover? Well you shouldn't do that with the book Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind. This book isn't choppy or rugged. It's smooth and thick. It seems like you are the characters instead of just reading about them. This book also gives you a little taste of culture and reality in other countries. So if you to ever get the chance to read this book you'll be taking a trip that you'll never want forget!

Summary: Camel City
Review: Im sorry but this book was horrible. I had to read it for English and i could hardly read it because it was soo boring! I mean come on! They have a WHOLE page about camels mating!!! I hated this book... I recomend NO ONE reads it!

Summary: Pretty boring
Review: This book is ok I guess but it's so boring! I had to read it for Language Arts and I had to force myself to read it because it was so uninteresting. I don't like the way the author wrote it either. It has a few parts that catch your attention a little, but mostly she just talks about the camels and water and making food and planning her sister's wedding. Not very interesting.

Summary: A tough life of a young girl.
Review: I read this book partly because it was an assignment but partly because it sounded good. (i read the back) And when I finished I immediatly started Haveli because it was very good!! It descriptivly describes the hard life of a young girl. Who goes through a lot of tough times & pain while she is still very young. She also has to make a lot of descisions that can completly change her life for either the good or bad!! If you still haven't read this & are interested than you should!!!!!!

Summary: A Powerful Story About Internal Strength
Review: This story is beautifully written and has an interesting setting. Women's issues are focused on in a story that keeps you guessing until the end. The first chapter starts out a little slow but it is well worth reading through and getting to know the protagonist. This book really touched me and moved me enough to write a review--which I rarely take the time to do.

Summary: An okay read
Review: "Shabanu" is the story of a young Muslim girl whose religion dictates many aspects of her life. Shabanu lives in the Cholistan Desert of Pakistan, and spends her days running wild with the camels she loves so dearly. Shabanu's older sister, Phulan, recognizes her place as a young Muslim woman, and submits to her role. Shabanu, however, refuses to be controlled by a man. She nears her wedding with a sense of fear, for she knows she can never be happy when she is forced to marry. Phulan, the older of the girls, and the family travel to their cousins' home for Phulan's wedding. Tragedy strikes, and Shabanu must give up her dreams to help her family. I enjoyed this book, even though it was a class assignment. It was very descriptive, but it danced around the real plot for the majority of the book. I believe the depth of the story could have been told easier without so much filler. This wasn't one of my favorite books, but I would recommend it to a friend. Shabanu goes through a lot as she grows and realizes that life isn't all peaches and cream.

Summary: THIS IS HORRIBLE
Review: I've read some bad books in my life but this one takes the trophy. I was unwillingly forced to read this book by my english teacher. I hated this book so much I almost couldn't read it. This book isn't worth the lint in my pocket [price] what a joke. this book seems like it was written by someone that never has fun and doesnt like seeing other people having fun either. this book drives me insane. I am not usually a negative person but reading this book has made me be one on occasion. Nothing good ever happens to Shabanu. Shabanu seems like a good charecter.but they ruined her in the book. If newberry award is for bad books I see why. DO NOT GET THIS BOOK IT IS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: It's okay
Review: I'd say that the only problem with Shabanu is that it doesn't get really exciting until the last few chapters. I don't know if reading it in school and having to write about every chapter had an impact on my opinion, but I wouldn't read it again.

Summary: This author knows Pakistan and Afghanistan first-hand
Review: As a school librarian, I first read this story because it won the Newbery Award. I was overwhelmed by the power of its writing and the insight it gave me into another culture, and have since given it to my nieces and read the author's other books. Last weekend I attended a reading teachers' conference just to hear the featured author. Everyone should have this opportunity. I learned she was a UPI reporter in Pakistan and Afganistan from before the Afghan war with Russia, through the '70's and '80's, and then during the early '90's she lived with nomadic Muslim tribes, learning their language and culture first-hand, before returning to the U.S. to write "Shabanu." Everyone should read this book!
