Summary: Shabanu is fabulous for teaching about customs in Pakistan.
Review: The customs and culture of rural Pakistan come alive in this book by Suzanne Fisher Staples. Using first person narration made the story immediate and very realistic.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Terrible book! One of the worst books I've read!
Review: I was reguired to read this book in my english class. I think it was a terrible book. All the girls in my class really liked it, but as for me I hated it. It was written well but, I wouldn't be surprised if not one boy in the world liked it.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: From a 7th grade student
Review: I was required to read this book in social studies and it grossed me out. This is not a book for boys because of all the stuff about maturing in it and girls under the age of 14 I would not recommend reading this because it might scare you. The only good thing that I got out of this book was a little bit about the culture. The ending was terrible. Save yourself the trouble and don't read this book. There are so many good books out there to read and so little time to read them!

Summary: A seventh graders review
Review: Shabanu was a good book. It is about a girl named Shabanu that lives in a desert in Pakistan. She is only 12 and her parents have already decided who she is going to marry. It tells about her life and how she lives. It was interesting and I learned a lot about her culture.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: Staples' novel, Shabanu, allowed me into a world of which I knew nothing. Shabanu gracefully introduced me to the harsh but beloved desert life of a free-spirited young girl constrained by religion and social customs. I highly recommend this beautifully crafted tale which not only reveals a world few of us even knew existed but also demonstrates the value of life as Shabanu sees it.

Rating: 2 stars

Summary: Lynne
Review: This was an outstanding tale of Shabanu, a young girl living in a desert region. This is how she grows up being promised marriage to Murad, her cousin. Then things turn for the worse when her sister, Phulan's fiance is murdered. Shabanu is then forced to marry Rahim, a wealthy landowner. I urge you to read this book, if you haven't already!!!!!!

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Shabanu was a very dull book, there was not alot of action.
Review: I am in 7th grade and I was required to read this book. Most of my friends also thought it was pretty lame. I think it would be a better book if i was a little older so that i could really understand it. My friend hated the book so much, she stopped reading

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: lovely, elegant descriptions of a different place and people
Review: I first read this book when I was young, but I still enjoy re-reading it. It is the deeply moving story of a strong girl named Shabanu, and her challenges growing up in a culture which has very settled roles for women. She struggles to find a place for herself as an individual and a female in her society. This novel has wonderful characters, human and animal, and (having lived several years in a similar culture and area) I am tremendously impressed and admiring of how Suzanne Staples has captured the spirit and atmosphere of the Cholistan desert and its people. This novel is touching in every way, and should be read by people of all ages; it can help us, both to understand another, very different culture, and to appreciate the universals of people everywhere
