Rating: Summary: Never the Same Review: "Breathing Underwater" is an extremely good book, written by Alex Flinn. She tells a story of a boy named Nick, who has abusive issues. He is a popular kid at school, until something goes wrong. One day he meets a girl named Cailtin and falls in love with her. Then the control begins. He puts her down by calling her names, and saying untruthful things to her. Nick's dad's abuse of him makes him think abusing caitlin is okay. Such abuse causes him to lose his friends, and popularity. Nick even had to go to court, take anger management classes, and write in a journal. Will he like anger management? What will happen with Caitlin and Nick? Read the novel to find out. This book is a great read! It tells about things that can happen in a teenage relationship. I believe that in teenage relationships, abuse should not happen. I like this nevel because I learned what abuse does to a person in that kind of relationship. It gives readers an idea of what to look for in an abusive relationship. It talks about abuse, and how a person can overcome it. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially someone in an abusive relationship,
Rating: Summary: Best Teen Novel Review: "Breathing Underwater" was an excellent novel about a high school relationship gone wrong. Two teens, Nick Andreas and Caitlin McCourt, start dating and everything is perfect, untill Nick becomes demanding and jealous. Nick hits and/or verbally abuses Caitlin almost daily. Caitlin finally turns Nick in after the last straw and leaves Nick in a bad situation where he has to take anger management classes and write his side of the story in a journal. I gave "Breathing Underwater" 5 stars because every time I put it down I wanted to read more. The plot of the story was always exciting. I was always thinking about what Nick would do next, and if Caitlin would take him back once again. I also liked how the author made the book take place in the past and the present. Overall, this was one of the best books I have read in a while
Rating: Summary: Breathing Underwater Review: The book, Breathing Underwater, by Alex Flinn is a wonderful book for all teenagers. This is because it talks about issues important for teens to hear about, such as sexual abuse, relationships and friendships. Nick, the main character, hits his girlfriend, Caitlin. She reports the abuse and they go to court, where Nick is ordered to attend anger management classes and write 500 words in a journal each day about what his abusive behavior. His best friend since kindergarten, Tom, ends his friendship with Nick because of this incident. A neat thing about the book is the typeface that the author has chosen The regular font in the book explains what Nick is going through right now. The type that looks like handwriting is what Nick is writing in his journal, all the significant events he went through with Caitlin. I think the author wrote about this book to send a message to all young adults about sexual abuse and other events they might go through in life. He wants to stop kids from doing abusive things and help make our world a better place. This book is totally worth reading, but probably for only for teens and young adults. Teenagers will find this book to be humorous at some points and very educational. Little kids will not get the point of the book and may find the book discusting at some points, because it is graphic in descriptions. Breathing Underwater is a wonderful book that all teenagers shoud read.
Rating: Summary: breathing underwater is tops! Review: I think every teenager should read this book! It is one of the best books for teens that I've read in a long time. I read it in 2 days and didn't want to put it down. It was well-written and I really admire Alex for the great work she did. I can't wait to read the future books that she writes. So run out and buy this book!
Rating: Summary: Breathing Underwater is a positive yet rude awakening! Review: Breathing Underwater was an interesting and informative book about abusive relationships. It gives you a great portrayal of an abusive relationship from the eye of the afflicter not the victim. The book sets a good example of what to do if you were in a situation like this, and what happens after the relationship is over. It is sort of like a rude awakening, but in a positive way, letting you know that there are people in those situations that choose to do nothing about it! The book starts out in the present then kind of flashes back through the whole relationship in journal writings. Also, this book doesn't really ever get boring, there is always something going on to keep your interest. I think that this book is a great read for anyone!
Rating: Summary: Gives You A Whole New Perspective Review: Breathing Underwater is an amazing book that will really challenge the reader's beliefs and assumptions throughout its length. Nick is a fairly average 16 year old guy. Except for the fact that his girlfriend has got a restraining order against him because he slapped her JUST ONCE, and now his friends aren't talking to him and he's afraid his dad will get really angry again. Nick's ordered by a judge to attend anti-violence classes and keep a journal about his feelings, which he does, grudgingly. We learn of how his perfect relationship with Caitlin, the only girl he's ever really loved, turned sour and how he deals with it. You'll love Nick, hate him, feel sorry for him, and all the other characters in this brilliant, gritty and thought provoking novel about abuse and healing.
Rating: Summary: This is a must read book!! Review: I was on a 8 hr road trip with my family, packed into the car and all I could do was read this book. I didn't stop reading for 1 second. Nick's mother left him when he was young with his abusive father. He's never told anyone about it except his true love Catlin. Nick starts to do what his father does to him to Catlin, he starts to become abusive of Catlin and after "1 slap" as Nick says Catlin takes him to court. Nick is forced to go to a group angermanagment theropy session. Nick makes a friend there and starts to seehow he was with Catlin. In the end Catlin was able to stop Nick's abusiveness, but will Nick be able to stop his father's.
Rating: Summary: Levi's Review Review: This book is amazing. I picked it up one day in the library and was thinking I would only read a few pages while I wait for my brother to get information on reptile books.I picked it up because of the title.I read 5 pages and was glued to my seat.I didn't want to quite reading. So I checked it out and last night FINISHED it. When the book first starts the setting is in a courtroom with Catlin, Catlin's mom, Nick, & Nick's father. The reason the setting is placed in a court room in the beging of the story is because Nick is on trial for abusing his girlfriend Catlin. He didn't abuse his girlfriend every night he just slapped her once. He finds out he takes out aggression by hitting people..just like his father dose with him. After the night he slapped his girlfriend he becomes a loser and everyone hates him. Worst of all...he can't see Catlin anymnore. After court Nick is assinged to write in a "journal" like notebook everyday with 500 words or more.He is also assinged to attend an anger managment type class for people with simillar problems like Nick. In this journal he writes about his feelings he had with Catlin. How he misses being friends with the guy he's hung out with since first grade Tom. And the people that change his life in the class he is taking. If your looking for a book that gose beyond "Don't You Dare Read This Mrs. Dunphrey" By: Margarett Peterson Haddix.Or if your a girl you'll even like this book.
Rating: Summary: EKU Student Review: After reading Breathing Underwater, I think the book would be most appropriate with 13-18 year olds. I just do not think middle school students are ready for this type of book. Most usually they are just going back and forth with the boyfriend/girlfriend issue. Several of them do not actually go on any major dates because they can not drive. Therefore, they have not gained that independence yet. I do not think they would be able to understand the seriousness of the verbal as well as physical abuse in the book. I think this book would be a good book for boys or girls in high school. No, a slap is not a pat on the shoulder. Caitlin should have been more alarmed the first time her boyfriend decided to be jealous and controlling. Girls need to realize that it is not o.k. to be pushed around and you do not deserve it no matter what a guy tells you. Through Nick's journal we can see that he finally realizes what he has done, but will it be enough to get Caitlin back. This book would be an excellent book for all teenagers to read to see how relationships can go wrong. Obsessions sometimes lead to uncontrollable actions, so save your self from this type of relationship.
Rating: Summary: It was only a slap. Review: "It was only a slap." Those were the words Nick told the judge, as he stood in court, because his girlfriend, Caitlin had a restraining order on him. The judge did not believe him, as she ordered him to attend a group counseling session each week for 6 weeks with other guys that had hit their girlfriends. She also ordered him to keep a journal which explained the whole situation. Thus begins BREATHING UNDERWATER, about Nick, a handsome and popular 16 year old guy that looks as if he has everything: a nice car, a nice house on the beach in an upscale neighborhood, and a beautiful girlfriend! So how could such a nice guy end up in a situation like this? Well, there's a lot about Nick that no one knows about, except Caitlin knows now. Read BREATHING UNDERWATER! It's an excellent read that poignantly presents typical, as well as less typical, emotions and actions of today's teenagers.
