Rating: Summary: Anger- Like Breathing Underwater Review: Nick has it all, a beautiful girlfriend, charming father, the perfect GPA and lots of wealth to the family name. So why does he throw it all away? This compelling novel by first time author/lawyer Alex Flinn is stirring and emotional. Nick's search for the love of his mother (who left when he was still small) and an escape from his father's abusive personality results in self-destruction and fear. The book deals with abuse in teen relationships, something all to common and practically untouched by most authors. When Nick's girlfriend Caitlin finally files charges agaisnt him for abuse, Nick makes a complete turnaround. While I find such complete revelations virtually impossible, it feels refreshing to read that there is help for people like Nick and Caitlin and that sometimes the things you love most, you have to let go of. It's touching, inspiring and absolutely wonderful.
Rating: Summary: Staying STRONG when things go WRONG! Review: "Breathing Underwater" is a book about a high schooler named Nick, who seems to have the perfect, ideal life for the age of 16. On the inside, everything is wrong though. Nick winds up in court for hitting his girlfriend, Caitlin, and he now must attend anger management classes and write in a journal. Everyone seems to not be there for him, including his dad who never actually was there. Will Nick be able to heal all the wrong on this inside? Read to find out! I gave this book four stars because it's something real and interesting that everyone can relate to. This book also helps explain the weirdness of abusive relationships and why some women go back. I personally liked the way that Alex Flinn wrote. The actions in this book are well-paced and the language and events that happen are so real and down to earth. You can picture every character perfectly in your mind and can relate someone to them. If you are interested in books about abusive relationships or high school drama, this is the book for you!
Rating: Summary: ...anger management... Review: This novel really hits home with me. I know what the main character is going through, so I guess I'm a bit biast. Either way, this is an amazing book. I loved it, and I highly recomend it for any high school student. It's amazing.
Rating: Summary: An insightful story about an abusive relationship. Review: First of all, I have to say that this book is very good. It was a very insightful story about a boy, Nick, who abuses his girlfriend. I read this story in my English class, and everyday I've found myself anxious to get to class and find out what happens next. The book starts off in the present, where Nick and his father are at court with his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin, and her mother. Caitlin requests a restraining order, and the judge grants it. She also forces Nick to attend anger management classes and write 500 words a week in a journal about what happened. From here, the book switches from past to present. In a chapter, you learn how life is for Nick after the trial. Ending each chapter is his journal. Nick's journal details what happened in the past with Caitlin. This book deserves five stars because it's very true-to-life. It's told from Nick's point of view. It's insightful because of Nick's attitude. Nick's tone sounds very much like someone who abuses a girlfriend would. Alex Flinn, the author, worked with men like this, along with battered women and children. Another thing is this book makes you think. You wonder why one person did something, and you think, 'Oh, that was mean of that person,' and then when you read on, you find that they're justified. And this happens to a character more than once. I recommend this book for anyone who's been in abusive relationships, or who just wants to read a good book.
Rating: Summary: The Escape Review: The book "Breathing Underwater" is a very powerful book for teenagers anywhere. I feel like this book sends a message that can't be ignored by anybody. Especially those people who are in these situations, both boys and girls. Young girls and boys who are in abusive relationships right now could get some courage to get out of them and away from their abusive partners from this book. If they don't want to end up like Caitlin, abused and embarrassed, they will leave their partners far behind them. Hopefully these boys and girls get the message and decide to do something with where they are at before they become another statistic. In this book Nick was a popular handsome teenage boy who unfortunately had an anger problem. Nick's mother left his father to raise him when he was only a child. Nick's father also had an anger problem and everyday verbally and physically abused Nick. Nick unfortunately developed his father's bad ways, and began abusing his new girlfriend Caitlin. Caitlin was a girl who had spent most of her life being fat and feeling ugly. Just that year she lost all that weight and was feeling really good about herself. Nick was the first boy who had ever taken interest in Caitlin, so she felt like his abuse towards her was perfectly fine, and for her own good. Nick at first was just verbally abusing her until finally it turned physical. Caitlin at first listened to her friends and tried to avoid Nick, but whenever they were alone together, Nick could talk her into anything. She took him back again thinking that things would change and get better, but not long after, the abuse had started right back up again. Only this time it had actually gotten a lot worse than before. The last time Nick beat up Caitlin, he beat her the night of her show that he didn't want her to perform in. He said he didn't want the people in the crowd all looking at her because she was fat and couldn't sing. She did anyway trying to surprise him and show him that it wouldn't be that bad, and he got really angry. He thought that the dress she was wearing was too revealing for her. He dragged her outside in the parking lot and began slapping and punching her in the face. He would have kept on beating her if it wasn't for all of their friends who were also in the show. After that, Caitlin had nothing to do with Nick. While all of this was going on Nick had been placed in anger management classes by the courts. He didn't really get the message that he needed them until the end of the book when he decided to re-take the class himself. All in all, this book was pretty good. I would recommend this book to those who even aren't teenagers. This book did give me a sense of hope for all people who are in abusive relationships. This book can make a difference in people's lives. This book can honestly guide them to making the right decisions and doing the right thing.

To everyone Nick has the perfect life .He's rich, good looking and has his first real girlfriend. The trouble starts when Nick starts going out with Caitlin. He experiences jealously and starts to develop an abusive mind. He hits her and has to attend anger management class. The way the author tells the story is pretty cool. We read what Nick has to go through after he hit his girlfriend and we get to read his journal that tells what happened before he slapped her. Rating: Summary: A Story of an Abusive Teenager... Review: "Breathing Underwater" is a book about a teenage boy named Nick Andreas. Nick has a pefectionist father who likes things his way or he gets abusive. Nick abused his girfriend, Caitlin, and now has a restraining order on him. Nick has to keep a journal. In the journal Nick tells the story of how he and Caitlin met, how things changed, how he got angry when she disobeyed him, and how what he thought to be the perfect relationship suddenly ended with him not understanding why. Nick's friends notice he is a little to controling and Tom says something about it to him. When Tom talks to Nick, Nick gets mad telling Tom eveything's fine. But is everything fine? I thought "Breathing Underwater" was a good book. We read it during English class and I never wanted to stop reading the book to do other class work. I like how Alex Flinn put in the past by having Nick keep a journal while still telling about the present. I also like how she told the story as if it were true. What I don't really like is how Tom went back to Nick the next school year wanting to be best friends again. It makes it sound like Tom wasn't friends with Nick, only because he wanted to get Caitlin for himself.
Rating: Summary: WHO BEATS WHO? Review: This book is about a boy named Nick who is a respected football player at a Miami High School that is beaten by his father. Since Nick is beaten at home his anger and frustrations start to rub off at school and on his girlfriend. After Nick hits his girlfriend, Caitlin there is a restraining order placed on him and Nick must go to anger management classes. In all of this mess Nick loses his best friend, the girl he supposedly loves, and his reputation at school. I gave this book two stars because I thought that it was too lovey-dovey and the end made no sense. But other than that this was a good book; it was just not my type. I think that the author did a good job to make this book realistic, funny, and interesting. It shows the reader a realistic view of what teenage abusive relationships look like and what happens to people who abuse their girlfriend/boyfriends. Also it shows what emotions they have and what causes them to do to do these things. I would recommend this book to readers who like to read about abusive relationships.
