Rating: Summary: mega slam dunk Review: Slam is a great book for young african americans to read, because it is about a young black teen struggling . He has a family that is going through some problems, and a friend that is like a brother to him. He plays basketball for the wrong team, and is not very much of a straight "A" student. I gave this book a five star rating because it is a story about a black male trying to survive
Rating: Summary: A Teenage Dream Review: "Man, what you doing walking down the street with my dream?" Greg "Slam" Harris In the book SLAM! by Walter Dean Myers, a seventeen year old named Greg Harris, who dreams about becoming a pro basketball player, goes to a new high school, Latimer. He lives in Harlem and is always playing basketball. Everyone calls him "Slam" because of his basketball skills. When he starts at Latimer, he gets on the basketball team just like at his old school, Carver. The coach dislikes him and this causes many problems. Also, Slam has to deal with his best friend, Ice, who might be dealing drugs. This book really portrays how hard a teenagers life can be. I found that to really enjoy and undersatnd this book, you have to both like and undersatnd basketball. I enjoyed reading this book because I could relate to Slam when it came to basketball. SLAM! gives many excellent descriptions of the basketball games at Latimer and how the teamates felt about each other. I think many teenagers could relate to Slam and all of the problems he went through. SLAM! by Walter Dean Myers is an exellent book to read and especially if you're a lover of basketball. It is very realisic and many people can connect to it.
Rating: Summary: Nice and Precise Review: I gave this book 5 stars because that is what I truly believe it deserves. Slam is one of those books that once you start reading, you don't want to put it down until you finish the last word of the final chapter. The story of Greg "Slam" Harris will capture the hearts of many basketball fans and as well as anyone who likes to read. Living in Harlem, having a struggling family, problems at school, friends going down the wrong path were the troubles Greg went through. But once he stepped out on the court, everything was perfect. The detailed story telling of Walter Dean Myers is "nice and precise." Every dribble of the ball, every jump-shot taken and every emotion is described in this book. It is as if you are right on the court with Greg. There is also this one part of the story when Greg is trying to figure out a math problem. Walter describes that sequence so well that it even taught me how to solve the problem. The pinacle of the book is when Greg's team plays against his best friend(Ice) and his team. They are the two best players in the city, with the two best teams. They go at it until the last buzzer sounds and only one will be champion. Who will it be??? All in all, this is one of the most entertaining books I have ever read. It will inspire those who need an up-lifting in life. Read it!
Rating: Summary: Slam Review: This book is about a high school kid living in a terrible neighborhood. After he switched from Carver High to Latimer High he is faced with new challenges. The teachers and his coach are giving him problems and his grades are slipping. To raise them the princeable and his mother agree that he could use a tutor. Slam, his nickname does not agree and never gives the tutor a chance. While all this is happening he also is faced with problems with his friends. A girl he likes i graduating and going to leave and another friend of his is taking the wrong path and dealing drugs. The same friends are best friends and plan to join the NBA together. However, with his new problems Slam thinks he can't. My favorite part in this book is when Slam takes over games and wins it for they. Although they exaggerate his skills it is still my favorite and I hope to be that talented. I also like it when he joins one on one in basketball. His thoughts are written out so you know what he's thinking. These are all my favorite because I to love and play basketball and hope to get into the NBA. The describition and detail the author uses in this book allows you to feel like your there and you imagine that your Slam. Even I get hyped. I recommend it to teenagers who like basketball.
Rating: Summary: 1,2,3 win Review: Greg Harris, also known as 'slam', is a seven-teen year old basketball player from the ghetto of Harlem. This story is about young boys struggles on and off the court. Slam's a star on the court, but off the court, his grades aren't as good. Schools not a priority to Slam. The only thing that matters to him is friends, family and basketball. After going to a poor school all of his life, slam is now being transferred to a rich white school. He's being forced to leave everything he loves and go to a new school with nobody he knows. Latimer high is a more academically challenging school, and Slam is having a hard time adjusting to the school's standards and classes. Slams classroom behavior has resorted constant meeting with the principal and his parents. Not only has his school life been hard, but also basketball at Latimer is not so hot. Slams attitude has him sitting on the bench most of the time. Back at his other school, Slams girlfriend Mitsha is persisting that he come back and see if his best friend Ice is dealing drugs. Walter Dean Myers does a great job of explaining the difficulties of a young teens life in the projects. Slam, is very well written book. It has lots of action and suspense with a little bit of drama wove into it. If I were going to rate this book I would give it 41/2 stars. I really suggest you read this book.
Rating: Summary: Slam! Review: Greg"Slam"Harris is one of those special players that could go all the way from the streets to the suites. The only thing holding him down is his grades. He has to constantly battle his new coach and teachers. He gets plenty of help though from Mtisha, his new friend Ducky, and the assistant coach Goldy. Goldy gave him some good adice saying that the game is played on the court and off the court. I liked this book a lot. They had some intense games and also showed how it is in the ghetto.
Rating: Summary: A book any kid can relate to. Review: Slam is a great book for all ages of kids that live in the inner city. This book reflects my life alot. I was really impressed by the authers knoledge of the streets, and he obviosly knew alot about the game of basketball. The segments of the games were fantastic, you felt like you are right their on the court, the descriptions of what goes on inside slams head during the game are exactly like the thoughts going through my mind when I'm playing. Some of the promblems in slams life must have been taken from the authors expeirences as a teen ager, because this book reflects the life of a teen ager so good, and unless you are one or had been a teen ager recently this book would not make sense. This was a great book to read and a would deffenitly recomend it to teens who are looking for a easy quick read.

He used to go to a high school called Carver with his friends, but then got picked to to a school named Latimer. Mostly populated with white students. He has disagreements with the coach, but becomes good friends with assistant coach named Goldy.I think the book is great because I found things in common with the main character.Like how he plays basketball and he has trouble in school. And how he lives in the ghetto. This book is more than just a basketball book. The book describes how ghetto life is. How his best friend Ice gets involve with dealing drugs. I think it's one of the greatest books Walter Dean Myers wrote.
Rating: Summary: Slam! Review: This is a good book about an urban kid trying to get a career in basketball, but he has problems on the way. He is the star player at his high school but gets transferred to a different high school. He is doing his best to fit in while trying to keep his grades up and keeping his basketball career up also. Some of his problems are his friends, drugs, girls, and school. I like this book because it shows how to take care of situations and keeps you wondering how he's going to fix his problems.
