Rating: Summary: Slam! Review: This book is about a boy named Greg Harris. He is seventeen years old and is 6 feet and 4 inches tall. In the hood, people call him Slam. The story is about Slam who likes to play basketball. He sees players come and go. He feels maybe he'll make it to the top or he might stumble along the way. Slam lives with his Mom, Dad and his brother Derek. His best friend is Ice and his girlfriend named is Mtisha. The main thing Slam does in this story is played baketball with his teammates in school. One of Slam's problem is that he is failing math. The coach told him if he doesn't pass his math course,he would not be allowed to continue to play basketball with his team. My favorite character is Slam because I can relate to him wanting to play baketball and being the best he can. I can understand Slam having difficulty with math since I myself am having problems too. I have played basketball just like Slam. I enjoyed this sport as much as Slam. I enjoyed reading this book because I could really relate to the character,Slam. I liked this book. My favorite part was when Slam played one on one with his coach and Slam won. I also enjoyed reading that Slam overcame his diificulty with his math course. He obtained help from his gilfriend. I would keep the ending the same because it is a story about a school-aged boy. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to play basketball. Any person who like to read how a school-aged boy overcame his failing grade in order to continue what he loved the most, basketball.
Rating: Summary: Slam! Review: Slam is my favorite book. I liked it so much that I didn't want it to end. The characters and story were exciting. I kind of felt like I could relate with the characters and the story. Slam is a person who plays basketball and he is really good at it. He's not very good in school and homework. He has a best friend named Ice. Ice is good at basketball too. Slam thinks that Ice is dealing crack. I would really recommand this book to someone who likes basketball or sports books.
Rating: Summary: slam! Review: i've had read a lot of books by Walter Dean Myers but Slam was the best of all. It was an awesome book. I like basketball so i thought that it would be a good book for me to read. Slam's grades were very bad but he had to keep them up so he can play on the team. At first the coach didnt think slam was any good but he also didnt like his attitude. Slam had to move from his best friend "Ice" in Carver to Latimer. Ice and Slam are growing farther apart until Ice shows up at Slam's first game and supports him. Last year Latimer lost big tp Carver but that was when Carver had Ice and Slam but now there apart and there about to play against each other
Rating: Summary: one of the greatest Review: Reading the book slam by Walter Dean Myers was one of the greatrest experience i have ever had. The main characters name is Greg, even though everyone around him call him slam. I play basketball which is one of my favorite things to do, same with slam. Also So this is one of the reasons why i liked the book. This book realates so much to my life, because slam is also in love with basketball and is a good player. "i don't think you can stand being away from basketball", is what i think the the theme of the book is. This refers to slam and that he will do anything that sombody tells him to do except give up basketball. This quote somewhat relates to my life too because i wouldn't give up basketball up for anything either. I agree with everything slam did for himself and his friend. If i was in his place i would have done the same thing. One of the things i would do after reading this book would recommand this to anyone who loves basketball, is in high school, or who even loves to read. Its a great book and i am sure that anyone who reads it will become attached and love the book.
Rating: Summary: Slam! Review: I thought this book was amazing, I loved the fact that it was written at a teenagers point of view. It really made it easy to connect with the characters due to his use of slang words and phrases. I would deffinently recomend this to a person who is into basketball, Walter Dean Myers does a wonderful job of describing the basketball parts of the book, play by play, so the reader can really picture them. This is deffinently a must read!.
Rating: Summary: "Slam" Review: I liked the book. The first reason I liked the book was the setting .In Harlem through Quenns and the Bronx. The setting reminded me of the old park I used to run ball at. The setting reminded me of when I used to make my defenders get towels. Reason # 2 is because of my love and passion for the game of basketball. The versatility that "Slam" possesed. He could rise up and dunk on you and he could take you outside and shoot the "J".It amazed me that he could rise at 6'4". When he played it seemed like he was angry. It was like the opposing team was the only team he could take his anger out on. You could tell by his style of play that he didn't lose very many ball games. The 3rd and final reason is the suspense that Walter Myers brings to the novel. In "Slam" he brings forth delimmas that Slam handels the only way he knows how. Sometimes Slam makes good choices and sometimes he makes bad choices. However he learns from his mistakes and uses his knowledege to better himself and the people around him. The best part of the book was when Slam played his coach. The fire that Slam had on that day to win the game. His competitive spirit is what made the novel intresting. The presense that Slam appeared to be in the low post. As he swatted his coach's shot twice. He was unstoppable. On both ends of the floor. Offense and Defense. There was one line taht made me keep reading .That line was came about when the ball went out of bounds from Slam swatting his coach's shot. The coach said'"My ball." Salm replied, "Your ball my game ." The story elements that were most vivid to me were the setting and the characters. I truly believe that due to the living conditions the characters wre given they acted a certain way. For example in the novel it mentions that somewhere in the bourogh of Queens Bridge there is dealing of crack. Due to the large amount of peer pressure as wll as the rough living conditions the people who lived there did what they did and acted how they acted because of the fact that this lifestyle is all they knew. The town Slam lived in and the towns his peers lived in wre filled with people of the African-American race. There were very little white people in the town. Some of the people in the town were pathologically dependant on drugs to keep their addiction alive and give them justification to smoke at will. Overall the novel was excellent. I reccomend this book to those who like basketball and those who are mature enough to read about drugs, violence and sex and still be able to tie all of this into the novel. It was superb.
Rating: Summary: Slam! Review: Slam! The book I recommend you to read is Slam! by Walter Dean Myers. Slam, the main character, has a rough life in this story. For example, Slam's friend, Ice, is getting into drugs, and is making Slam's life harder than it already is. Slam's grandmother is also dying. Slam has to change schools, too. Although Slam has a hard time in his life, he also has some good times. For instance, he got to play basketball, his favorite sport, for his new school, Latimer. He also met new people at his new school. All in all, this is the book I recommend you to read.
Rating: Summary: Slam - Jay Sheth - Fiction Review: This book is about a high school kid living in a terrible neighbor. After he switched from Carver High School to Latimer High he is faced with new challenges. The teachers and his coach are giving him problems and his grades are slipping. To his grades the principle and his mother agree that he could use a tutor. Slam, his nickname, does not agree and never gives the tutor a chance. While all this is happening he also is faced with problems with his friends. A girl he likes is graduating and going to leave and another friend of his is taking the wrong path by dealing drugs. The same friends are best friends and plan to join the NBA together. However, with his new problems, Slam thinks he can't live out his dream. The reason I read this book was because a close friend, Shrey, recommended it. The book was great and I loved it. I too recommended it to people and another friend Kevin decided to read it. Although before I read it I read the summary and it seemed okay. Then I decided to read it since Shrey said it was a good book. My favorite part of the book is when Slam is in a game. The reason is because the author put great detail and I was able to imagine every thing that's going on. When he talks about a play they ran is so exciting. He talks about everyone on the court so you know what is going on all over the court. I recommend this book to teenagers who like basketball.
Rating: Summary: slam Review: The book Slam had a lot of events going on. Slam was Greg Harris's nickname that was given to him. People called him slam because he was a really good basketball player. The book slam was about Greg going to a new school that was more significant than his old school. His new school had a lot of smart people, and it was hard for him to catch up because his old school was more kicked back. At his new school, he is not getting good grades. Greg made it on his new school's basketball team and he is the best one. In this book he gets caught up in some moments that he should have not been in and he is facing the sickness of his grandmother. There are a lot of problem that Greg has to face including balancing two lives. I thought this book was a good book to read. It has many details, and it is a book full of the life of a teenager. Slam was book filled with action and it was also part of a life has a teenager that was growing up in a rough neighborhood. Greg had a hard time in school and with his new friends at the more significant school. He also had some problems with his old friends that were from his old school. I liked this book a lot. It told me how it is to grow up in a rough neighborhood. I realized it was extremely rough had you always had to be careful of what you said and did. There would always be people in all neighborhoods that will want to start a fight or injury you really badly.
Rating: Summary: Yo Slam? Where's your head at man? Review: This book was a great book for a lot of reasons. It really portrayed life on the streets, and that people can either fall or rise above their circumstances. It showed the reality of the streets at times when it talked about people dealing drugs, and at the end, the book tells you how the main character deals with the streets. This book was about a teenage boy named Greg "Slam" Harris. Everyone in his neighborhood and school called him "Slam" because he was awesome at basketball. During the book, Slam fails to realize that school is very important. All the ever does is think about his girlfriend, or play basketball. He thinks that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto. But what he doesn't realize is that your attitude toward one thing can effect your attitude toward another aspect of life. His attitude in the classroom relfected his attitude on the court, and he and his coach were always at odds. During the book, Slam deals with the harsh reality of the ghetto when his friend, Benny "Ice" Reese gets involved with drug dealing. Ice was also a great basketball player, regarded my man as the best in the city. He also endures being looked down on by his teachers simply because of the neighborhood that he is from. At the end of the book, Slam's future lies in his own hands, and no one can decide his fate except for him. He will either fall to the streets, or rise above his circumstances. I really liked this book a lot, because the author really made all the situations seem very real. I felt like I could relate to this book, because I used to not try hard in school, then I realized that school was very important, and having a good attitude was necessary. This book really inspired me to work hard in all areas of life, and it was a very well-written book. It was very exciting when Slam was playing in his basketball games to hear the author talk about when he slammed, or blocked somebody's shot. Overall, I had a great time reading this book. I would recommend this book to anyone, not just people who love basketball.
