Rating: Summary: Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... Review: I had to read this book for assigned summer reading. Besides the fact that I despise summer reading when many other schools have it as optional or writing instead, the book asn't completely horrible. The first half really, it was awful. It descibed everything way too much. I had to drive on rt. 1 and it gave me a headache because i heard it too much and i couldn't look out the window because i'd imagine seeing the suspicious looking kids walking along the road. And don't you think sum1 might get the tiniest bit suspicious of 4 kids walking along a HIGHWAY?? Wouldnt sum1 stop and see if they're ok??- The second half was better because they werent walking ALL THE TIME. Most of the time they got rides - at least after page 245.I love books but this one was terrible - and the ending is sooo predictable, I mean its called "Homecoming" for a reason... Anyway, more interesting stuff happens in the secong half. Other wise it just [stunk].
Rating: Summary: Appraisal for 'Homecoming' Review: Dicey, James, Sammy, and Maybeth are abandoned by their mother. Dicey, the eldest sibling, has to make decisions about what they will do, where to sleep, and how to eat. The children make money to survive doing odd jobs, but in all of their minds is the hope of finding someone who love and take care of all of them; together. They think of an Aunt Cilla, a relative whom the children are not very close to. But Dicey realizes that they have no other choice. But Dicey finds that the journey will be hard. They walk everyday, as far as they can without the younger children wasting away. Dicey loves them and keeps them safe. They join the circus and help setting things up, and befriend many people that help them. A friend in the circus manages to get them all bicycles, which greatly helps them on their journey. The children have problems as the trip moves along, for example Sammy becomes a theif. He steals food and money. But when Dicey finds that he had not just found the food she restricts him from ever doing it again. The children find themselves, and make many friends that help them along the way. They still have the hope that they will find Aunt Cilla, and live in a environment where they can be happy. This is a truly heartwarming tale of children struggling and surviving. A definite page-turner.
Rating: Summary: Like "Adventures in Babysitting" but stakes are higher . . . Review: Left on a mall parking lot in a strange town with three younger kids and $11, 13-year old Dicey must find a home for what's left of her family before they are discovered and sent to foster homes. Through many dangers, toils and snares, the Tillerman kids travel across three states, finding shelter where they can, working when they have to, even joining a circus for a while to escape a creepy farmer, with dog in tow, who has a fancy for Dicey's little sister, Maybeth. They think their journey's done when they arrive at their mother's childhood home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland . . . but then they meet their Grandmother, and she's the toughest challenge Dicey's encountered yet. I read Dicey's Song first, and I recommend that to middle school readers, even though it's the second in this series. Once you get to know Dicey in that book, you'll be eager to read all the other books in the series, including this one. Like traveling with friends, the long trip from R.I. to MD won't seem long at all because you're with people you like . . . the Tillermans.
Rating: Summary: Homecoming Review: I think Homecoming was a very good book. Except for the fact traveling took so long. My favorite part was when Dicey met the grandmother. I think Cynthia Voigt described her characters very well. Everytime she said their names I got a clear picture, especially the grandmother. I wouldn't mind reading another one of her books, if the traveling wasn't as long.
Rating: Summary: Homecoming Review: I rated Homecoming three stars because at times it was a real cliff-hanger but at other times it was repeating a lot of the same stuff. This book is about a mother who left her four children in a car alone at the mall parking lot. The oldest is Dicey-13, James-10, Maybeth-9 and Sammy-6. Now it is up to them to try and find food and a place to stay.
Rating: Summary: Homecoming Review: I would give the book Homecoming two stars as it dragged out. I think it dragged out because it tells about each day they are alone and almost the same thing happens every day. It is about four kids abanoned in a car. They have no mom, no dad and they don't know any relative execpt for their Great Aunt Cilla. They have to deal with many choices on their way like who to stay with, who should they trust, and what should they buy.
Rating: Summary: Homecoming Review: I thought this was a very good book. When I read it, I thought that I was like Dicey, always burdened with all those responsibilities to take care of James, who is twelve, Maybeth, who is nine, and Sammy, who is six. I thought the book was excellent, except for the fact that the traveling dragged on through the chapters. If Voigt could find a way to make the traveling half of the book a little shorter/ quicker I then would gladly give it five stars. I would say that this book could be read by anyone who enjoys a good book for what it is worth, not for it's length. I would reccomend the rest of the Tillerman series too. I have read it all and I had enjoyed it a lot more than the first book, Homecoming.
Rating: Summary: Homecoming Review: Homecoming a great book! The author wrote the book as a cliff hanger, so you wanted to keep reading.I never wanted to put the book down! Some parts of the book got really boring, but then it got better and better. This book made me think about how lucky I am to have parents who would never do what Dicey's mom and dad did to her!
Rating: Summary: Homecoming Review: Homecoming was an adventurous book. It was about four kids, Dicey, James, Sammy, and Maybeth whose parents abandoned them and are trying to find a family member to live with. They go through many obstacles on the way. For example, they don't have a lot of money, and they have any place to sleep. They are very confused because they have no idea why their mother left them. Some parts in the book were way too long. They dragged out. It could have been shorter. Overall, the author wrote well, it was an amazing story to read. Dicey showed a lot of courage throughout the entire book. I'd recommend this book to anyone that likes a good. long story.
Rating: Summary: Marvelous Review: Cynthia Voigt introduces us to the Tillerman's in "Homecoming." Voigt's captivating plot of the Tillerman's abandonment by their Mother and their action-packed journey on foot across several states in search of their Grandmother keeps her readers enchanted and turning page after page. If you have not experienced 'Cynthia Voigt', grab a copy of "Homecoming" and you will become a fan for sure...
