Rating: Summary: After the First Death Review: I started reading this book because I had to read this book. In my Eng. 12 class we started book clubs. Everybody in my club agrees with me. This book sucks! The way that the book is set up is so confusing. And what is up with cormier and putting a masturbation episode in his books. I believe that when he decides to put that kind of episodes in his books he is talking from a peronal experience.
Rating: Summary: an exciting novel Review: The novel is very exciting and gripping. We couldn`t stop reading since the middle of the book. Especially the main characters Kate and Miro are very fascinating for the reader because they give him an insight into their feelings. Hijacking and terrorism is an important subject and so we advise you to read this book.
Rating: Summary: Not a duty, but a pleasure. Review: in my opinion, "after the first death" is a good solution for english-students looking for some literary texts which aren't too difficult to understand. the vocabulary which is used by robert cormier isn't too easy - for students - and you have to look up quite a lot expressions and single words as the author often repeats them again later. the book isn't a cheap thriller you read if you're bored but it's written on a high stylistic level, it consists ofa lot of psychological aspects. i enjoyed reading the chapters dealing with the hijacking itself, miro, artkin and so on but: i was bored by those passages telling the reader about ben and his father in such a boring way at the beginning of the book. thank you.
Rating: Summary: Comment on the book Review: This novel is a very exciting and gripping book. The author describes the feelings and thoughts of the characters very well. You get a good look into their thoughts and feelings (almost) identify with them and understand them better. Besides, the language isn`t very difficult so that you can read very quickly and fluently, which as a non-narative speaker, I found a very pleasent and encouraging experience.
Rating: Summary: Comment about" After the first death" Review: I enjoyed reading this book because it is well written and full of tension that forces one to read on and on. Although I didn't know all the vocabulary it was easy to understand the storyline and the main ideas of the book. One thing that was a bit confusing to me first was the author's splitting up the story into chapters told from diferent perspectives: either Miro and Kate on the bridge or Ben, who described the whole action from his point of view, looking back at the event after a few months. But towards the end the reader will understand Ben's role. Moreover I liked this psychological thriller because I'm interested in suspense novels that build up expectations and then produce an utterly surprising outcome. your Kathy 11 A (KG)(G)
Rating: Summary: After the first death Review: We read this book at school and I admit that I didn't like it at the beginning. On the cover of the book you can see a man with a mask and a gun and maybe that's why I saw it so negativ. When I began to read it got really tense and I read it all through in one day because I couldn't lay it aside. After all terrorism isn't the kind of stuff everybody wants to read about in his free time. But maybe you'll like it!
Rating: Summary: Robert Cormier Did Fine Work Review: I enjoyed reading this book and the insights it gives about terrorist and their commitment to their course. It is a balanced book as it also shows dedicated commitment on the side of those opposing terrorism. It leaves us wondering who is right. Why can't people just live peacefully? Cormier, however confuses the reader in chapter eleven. Is Mark insane or is he unable to live with the guilt he feels for sacrificing his young and innocent son in the course of his patriotism? Despite the confusion, it's still an entertaining text, but for students who are reading it as a text for their 'O' Levels these are some questions which need to be clarified so as to give students a clear picture of whats going on or are they expected to come to their own conclusions? Help Please!
Rating: Summary: Great Review: This book really shows how far some terrorists will go to complete "their goal". It gives the prospective of the terrorist for most of the book despite insights from Ben. When Miro says "That it doesn't matter whether or not I get away. Whether or not I live or die. Whether anyone lives or dies. I have served my purpose." You know that he will stop at nothing. Great book!
Rating: Summary: What is evil really? Review: What is evil really? Who are the good guys and who are the bad? That's what this book makes you thinks. It shows you that sometimes life doesn't go the way you want it. I also liked how Miro was shown. Was he really a monster or just thinking the way he'd been taught all he life? Letting you get to know Miro,Ben,Raymond, and Kate also shows how unfair life is and sometimes the bad guys do win. Also the part with Ben and his dad,and what he made him do,though a bit confusing, was a great counter plot. This book was wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Letter to the Author Review: Dear Mr. Cormier, Your book, After The First Death, is a captivating book that never seemed to get boring. It got me hooked and kept me hooked until the very end. The book is very good and contains great mystery throughout the plot. I found that the story put its characters in difficult situations that they had no control over. I also found that the book addressed many issues within society and made me think about them. However, in spite of it strengths, the book gets confusing and hard to follow at times. I have to comment you on how you put the characters into difficult situations of which they had no control. They had to accept that their fate was no longer in their hands. I especially found this to be true in the character Kate. She knew that she was at the whims of the terrorists and that she almost knew that she was going to die sooner or later. Even through her attempts and ideas of how to escape, her fate was sealed. You made me think much about society while reading your book. It made me think of my own patriotism and how far I would go for my country. I also thought about what Ben had to do for his country. It was very sad how his own father knew he would give the terrorists information, so he deliberately gave Ben the wrong information. I would say that Ben helped his country by failing to do his job. It made me think even more about what I would have done in either case, being Ben or his father. Another issue that was brought to my attention was death. Throughout the story, the characters were referring back to death again and again. I found this to be true when Miro was in the bus while he discovered that one of the boys was dead. It was interesting how Miro, even though having seen many violent deaths, was not able to look at the innocent little boy who died of the poisoned candy. It almost moved me to know that Miro was human enough to feel for that child. Even though the book was great, I found it to get confusing at times. Sometimes I would think I was in Ben's point of view, but I was actually in the third person narrative. I also came across in the beginning expecting to know what was going on. I was almost ready to put the book down until things started to come into picture several pages later. However, in spite of these confusing aspects, this book was great. I hope you can take into account that I love this book and that I would recommend this book to everyone I know. Respectfully Yours, Umair
