Rating: Summary: Very Pleased to Have Read David Copperfield Review: This is the third Dickens novel that I have read (Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities being the others). Copperfield's story hit on the full range of emotions. You'll find yourself turning each page saying, "what is going to happen to this kid next?" Dickens finds a way to introduce over 30 major characters, each of which is a little more interesting than our hero. He ties up all of his loose ends and the result is a 64 chapter book that leaves your appetite for a good classic very satisfied. If you are trying to decide which Dickens to read first, Great Expectations would be a better pick, but once you have read that 5* classic you should be ready to spend a few weeks getting to know Copperfield and his friends.
Rating: Summary: Enhancing the Experience of Copperfield Review: So what can a person who had grown up in China in the 20th Century identify with the orphan in Yammoth, England in Dicken's Fiction? ... I can only say that I have experienced David Copperfield at many many levels since I was 5. My father first read me a comic book, drawn by Chinese artists, of DC. At 10, we listened to a Chinese radio broadcast (narrated) of DC. At 12, I discovered four volumes of DC in the shelf, all in Chinese. At 24, I read DC in the original text in English. In between, I came across this audio book. It help to wake up every imagination I ever had over the years about David, his life, and the even more interesting people involved in his life. The voices are so alive in this edition, that I can see their faces. The accents are so wonderful tailored to each character, and I dream of the day when I will be in bed with my own children, and reading from a comic book of David Copperfield, and immitate the voices I heard on the tapes. This is the most excellent rendition of DC, and offering an imaginative world more than text on book, but that even movies can not replace ...
Rating: Summary: David Copperfield Review: This is a book where Dickens' long-windedness catches up to him. He takes a long time to set up the novel and by the time he gets going, I am already impatient to see a resolution. I prefer "Oliver Twist," "Great Expectaions," and his unfinished "The Mystery of Edwin Drood." The first two of these also have boys at the center of the narrative but they are less brooding and melodramatic, and for this reason, more appealing to the modern American reader. "Copperfield" never struck a deep cord in me, maybe in part because the theme of little boy's suffering and discovery of the world feels a bit old and predictable after a while.
Rating: Summary: greatest book ever written!! Review: This is simply my favorite book. If there ever was a book that can change lives it's this one. It's the anecdote for all those students who were "forced" to read The Scarlet Letter or Great Expectations in school. Granted Expectations is a marvelous book but it doesn't capture you and keep you the way David Copperfield does. The wonderful vivid characters and Dickens incredible facility at riveting plot devices is unparralled. When I was a teenager reading this I asked my dad every night, after a few hours reading, what happened next. Amused my dad would just say,"Keep reading, you'll find out". The words Steerforth, Traddles, Uriah Heep, Mr. Micawber, Mr. Dick, Murdstone, Peggoty, "Barkus is willin'", and I am Born will live in your imagination forever. ec.t
Rating: Summary: Bravo Dickens ! The book is a masterpiece, no doubt Review: It is impossible not to be touched with the characters of the book. The book is long but yet it is enjoyable in its whole way. The characters are so strong that by the by it looks as if you're part of the story. As it is a semi-autobiography of Charles Dickens himself the reader also gets a bit of his life, his sufferings and how did he manage to achieve fame and fortune in a time of difficulty and adversity. When you get to the end of the book you really fell as if you've lost something. The end is remarkably beautiful. I cannot imagine a person who would not rank this book as five-starts. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: I love this book! It's very lengthy, but definitely worth the time it takes to read it. It follows the life of David Copperfield, but has many interesting and insightful character sketches in it. It's one of the best books I've ever read.
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING!! Review: I loved this book very much. It has taught me that life is never fair. Many families go through hardship, sacrifices and childrem at many times are treated unfair.
Rating: Summary: Catching up on some great literature!! Review: I decided to read 'David Copperfield' because, like so many, I am almost 30 years old , a survivor of public school and full of the realization that I have been robbed of the pleasure and the benefit of having read such great literature. If you have never read this book, you will find a magnificent story that will rivet you as it unfolds before your eyes. The characters are all very interesting and colorful in ways that are unique to each, which I suspect is why it is universally considered one of the 'Great Books'. With the 'WORDSWORTH CLASSICS' edition priced at [price]there is no excuse for not having read, what has become for me and many others alike, one of the best stories ever put to paper by pen!
Rating: Summary: Absorbing -- my life isn't this interesting Review: I understand that Charles Dickens incorporated many of his own life experiences into this masterpice, David Copperfield, and it shows: the title character relates the story of his life which such feeling, such fervor, and such detail, that you really have the sensation of having experienced his life along with him. When I started this large Victorian novel I expected it to be boring and irrelevant to my own life and my own experiences -- a relic from another time. On the contrary, I found that Dickens is a master in every respect, and his writing is quite relevant for our times. The plot comes together with intricate twists and turns along the way, and the drama and irony of Copperfield's life are well told. The best part about this book, though, is the humor. While I look for Dickens's message as I read, I'm impressed time and time again by the humor with which he tells about his life, and the witty details that he adds really keep you amused. What other writer would stress the tendency of Traddles's hair to stand on end, or of Mr. Micawber to be continually waiting for something to turn up? You'll like this book, if you stick with it to the end. Dickens's talent shows brilliantly in this novel. You'll come to revere Agnes, to love Dora, and to hate Uriah Heep, as fervently as David Copperfield himself. Living his life alongside him is a real treat, as much for the tale itself as for the experience of Dickens's style and his masterful plot twists. This is a gem of a book.
Rating: Summary: Unforgettable, Absolutely Stellar Fiction Review: I won't bother to go into the story and characters- you can find out more by reading the great, informative reviews posted below. Suffice is to say, I have yet to have such an emotionally rich literary encounter as in reading "David Copperfield". To describe it as merely 'brilliant' is wildly insufficient. All of the characters and storylines are so intimately and delicately crafted and interwoven, one cannot help but become emotionally invested in this story. Perhaps more so than any other moment in the novel, the one that lives in my mind is the final moment in which David Copperfield sees his spiritually devastated mother, Clara. This moment of profound emotional reckoning has reduced me to tears (literally) each and every time I have read those moving words that make up that passage. This is a novel about remembering, about longing, and Dickens encapsulates these sentiments in words like no other writer can, or has. One of the best literary experiences you will EVER have- do not miss David Copperfield!
