Rating: Summary: gets good in the middle Review: at the beginning of the book it's really dry. especially the first two chapters. but once you get to the middle it really picks up and you don't want to put it down. don't let the first couple hundreds of pages get you down. ;)
Rating: Summary: It was the best of times.. It was the worst of times.. Review: Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities is an excellent piece of literature. It grips the reader, with twist after twist, making you want to know what's next. The way Dickens can develop two plots independently and then merge them into a further thickening plot is amazing, and he did it before the age of "modern" literature.
Rating: Summary: Don't knock a book just because you don't understand it Review: Fortunately for him and his generation, but not for us, Dickens probably got paid by the word since much of his works were serials. A Tale of Two Cities is very "wordy", not unlike many of his other books. However, the deep meaning that Dickens conveys cannot be missed. He wanted to expose the social injustices that happened around him as well as to him when he was a boy. He is the ultimate advocator of the poor and thus respect should be given to both him and his work. His charaters are some of the deepest and most developed that I have seen in literature
Rating: Summary: Huh? Review: I didn't know what I was getting into when my ninth grade Honors English teacher assigned "A Tale of Two Cities" to the class. The only part I understood in the whole book was the first twelve words. I learned more about it from class discussions than from actually reading the book (which half the time was spent falling asleep). Unless you like to be confused, I don't recommend reading this book.
Rating: Summary: More literary nonsense... Review: This book, despite what every single English teacher will ever tell you, is nonsense. Dickens is, and always has been, overrated. Although there are parts of it I liked--especially the way Dickens used the present-tense for the last chapter--this book isn't all that great. Of course, as an American patriot, I'm biased. I like American authors more. To be even more biased, I like 20th Century American authors (Hemingway, Henry Miller, Fitzgerald, Michener, et cetera). Dickens wasn't completely talent-free, but for pete's sake, this book wasn't all that good. I'd feel much more enriched if we'd spent a month in my sophomore year studying "A Farewell To Arms" than this, if we have to stick to books about wars. Maybe some day we'll open our eyes and see that age does not a classic make.
Rating: Summary: The love of some, the bane of others. Review: "A Tale of Two Cities" was one of the most confusing books I have ever read in my years of existance. I'm sorry, but I am not a fan of extremely intricate plots and multiple themes and allusions gallore. "Why did I read it then?", one might ask. The answer is simple...school. I disaprove of the way literature is taught in high schools. Reading is a must, but, in my opinion, the subject should be completely up to the student. This is most certainly not a book for younger readers, with all it's confusing elements and violence. People who heave completed their education might enjoy this book...or not. I can see why people would like this book, although I didn't, and even though I loath "A Tale of Two Cities", I respect it greatly and believe that it has had a mostly positive effect on society.
Rating: Summary: I'm confused Review: I truly enjoyed the experience of reading such a book of classic literature this summer, but the ending left me pondering one thing: What made Sydney Carton decide to change his mind and die for his identical twin? Maybe I missed something because of the way the book was written, but other than this one, nagging mystery, the book was incerdibly well-written.
Rating: Summary: Great Review: I love this book. It is my favorite novel to teach and to read. I will never have another novel touch me the way that this one has.
Rating: Summary: Ho Hum Review: Dickens is a good writer, there is no doubt about that. The only reason i gave this an eight instead of 9 or 10 is that Dickens just has to have many many many coincidences to finish his book. There are too many times when you go "Wow, that was close. It sure is a good thing that -----." Still, even including the many coincidences in it which make me feel like i'm reading a soap opera script at times, this is a case where the good still definately overpower the bad, making it worth anybody's time to read.
Rating: Summary: It was the... WORST of times, wich i could have been spared Review: Maybe im being to hard on old charlie...then again maybe he was drunk when he wrote it, i sure felt like i was, it was terrible it never ended and never got to the point! it was like being bombarded by blather for 7 hours... it might have been better if charles had put in a little effort into it, but i think he had a deadline for the maggazine it was being put in and his publisher was giving him crap, for anyone 16 or under i would not read this, high school students beware, dont try and do a report on this...thing.
