Summary: YA novel that has adult appeal
Review: Sixteen-year-old Susannah has lived her entire life in New York City until her mother remarried and relocated them to Northern California. Susannah feels good for her mother, but worries about adjusting to a new home with a stepfather and three stepbrothers. She also fears the unknown because Susannah is a Mediator, an individual who communicates, fights, and sends ghosts on to their next destination.

On the first day at her new school, Susannah confronts Heather, a ghost who committed suicide when her boyfriend ended their relationship. Heather wants to return to her mortal life. She will hurt anyone in the way of accomplishing that deed. This places Susannah in danger, as she knows she must send Heather to the beyond where she belongs.

Teenagers who enjoy the Buffy stories will gain pleasure from this novel due to the tough-yet-sweet teenage heroine. The paranormal elements feel real making the audience believe that ghosts and an afterlife exist. SHADOWLAND proves that Jenny Carroll is a quality storyteller whose writing gives teens a pleasurable reading experience.

Summary: A fantastic first instalment
Review: Sixteen-year-old Susannah is a mediator, meaning that she can see and talk to ghosts who, for one reason or another, have not passed on to the next world. Having been plagued by these spirits for the past fourteen years, Suze had hoped that moving from New York City to a quiet town in Northern California would offer her a fresh start. However, the moment she steps into her new bedroom, Suze knows that that isn't going to happen, because she finds herself sharing her room with a 150-year-old ghost of a boy named Jesse. Not only that, but the first day of school brings more trouble: Susannah's locker comes accompanied by the ghost of a girl who killed herself and who is now out for revenge on her ex-boyfriend. Suze is determined to persuade the girl to pass on, but when it seems the usual methods aren't working, will more unconventional action be required?

Shadowland, the first book in the series, is one I really recommend as an ideal book for any teens into fiction with a supernatural theme. I found it impossible to put down and can't wait to get started on the next instalment in the series. Definitely worth five stars.

Summary: The Fabulous Start to an Amazing New Series!
Review: Susannah "Suze" Simon just traveled all the way across the country from New York to California to live with her mom, her new stepfather and her three new stepbrothers. Yippee. She hasn't even gotten the chance to unpack when she sees a ghost sitting in her bedroom. It is true that the ghost is really hot, but, hello, she cannot share her bedroom with a guy! She tells Jesse, the ghost, to take a hike, but, of course, he doesn't so Suze has to find another way to get rid of him. After Suze's first day at school, however, Jesse is the least of her worries. Heather, a very angry ghost girl who just committed suicide when her boyfriend broke up with her, is determined to make Bryce Martinson, her seemingly perfect boyfriend, pay for her death. Suze has never had a problem getting ghosts to leave before, true, she may have kicked a few ... to get them out of there, but they always left, but Heather wasn't leaving.

As Suze tries to convince her mom that she is happy in her new home, adjust to having a stepfather who insists they all eat dinner together (every night!), deal with three stepbrothers that she calls Sleepy, Dopey & Doc for a reason, exchange mediator techniques with Father Dominic, the first guy she has met who can also see ghosts, save Bryce from Heather's murderous impulses and get rid of Heather while making new friends at her new school, she finds that she has her hands more than full and figures out pretty quickly that, while California is not the same as New York, her life didn't get any easier...

I loved this book! It was so hilarious that I was laughing out loud while I read it. Suze is a fabulous character and is so matter of fact about seeing ghosts and how to deal with them and stuff that it doesn't seem at all unusual. Her friends are unique, her new stepfamily is a hoot when seen through Suze's eyes and Suze's idea of what California is like was pretty funny too. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am ready to pounce on all of the other books in this series. A must read!

Summary: The first book in a [great] series
Review: Susannah has moved from New York City to a small town in California. She was moving in with her new family ' her mother, step-father, and three step-brothers. But Susannah is still a mediator ' one of the few people who can see and touch ghosts. It is her job to help the ghosts of the world to where they are supposed to go. It's not too bad a job, but it can also be dangerous. Suze is about to face a very angry young ghost who is willing to kill anyone who gets in her way. So much for the peace and quiet of Carmel, California.

Suze is one of the strongest female characters that I have ever come across in teen novels and I hope she sets a trend. This book is a bit like the Sixth Sense, but Suze is not soppy and playing a victim like Cole does. Suze takes her job as a Mediator very seriously, and it is not surprising that she got in trouble in her old neighbourhood. Suze has to help ghosts out emotionally, but sometimes she also has to give them a dose of good old fashioned violence to get them to move on.

I have read up to book four in this series and have enjoyed them all. I have only given this book four stars though because the books tend to go on a bit more than neccessary - Jenny Carroll has this need to explain everything and describe everything really well. It makes the books very good, but it can be a bit exhausting to read them in a single sitting like they deserve.

Summary: A fresh start...sort of.
Review: Susannah is a mediator. A person who can see ghosts and help them get to wherever they're going by solving whatever problems they left behind when they died. When she moves from her busy, crowded life in New York, to a hopefully quiet, quaint town called Carmel-by-the-Sea, she was praying that she wouldn't have any trouble with the dead people living in her world. But, of course, these prayers would not be answered, and her "fresh start" turns out to be not so fresh at all. On the contrary, she ends up living in a very old but nice house, and there's an unfortunately attractive male ghost from the nineteenth century occupying her room. And when she goes to her new school, not only does she find out that there is a dangerous teenage girl ghost named Heather who has a bad habit of hanging out in front of Suze's locker (which used to be HER locker), but she also discovers a secret of the headmaster of the school: he is also a mediator. When Heather starts trying to kill her former boyfriend, and Father Dominic (the headmaster) isn't much help at getting Heather to move on, Suze knows that she must get rid of the wretched teenager herself--or die trying. This book was a great beginning to a fabulous series. I recommend it for fans of the 1-800-Where-R-You series also by Jenny Carroll.

Summary: Shadowland
Review: Susannah Simon is a sixteen year old girl who just traveled from New York to California to live with her new step-father and step-brothers. But Suze isn't your normal everyday girl, she's a mediator, a person to talks to the dead. She's been in her room for less than five minutes to find that a ghost is occupying her room. But Jesse isn't dangerous, unlike Heather, the ghost at Suze's new school. It seems that Heather is trying to take revenge on her ex-boyfriend for dumping him. This was a excellent book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys books that have a little supernatural activity in them.

Summary: Jenny Carroll is THE BOMB!
Review: Susannah Simon is not your average 16 year old girl, although she would very much like to be. That is because Suze is a mediator, a contact person for people who have died with unfinished business. Having left Brooklyn, New York (her home) to move to Carmel, California to live with her mother, her new step-dad, and those stupid boys also known as her step-brothers Suze hopes to make a fresh start by putting up the facade of being a normal teenager. However Suze is not to get her wish because as soon as she steps into her bedroom she meets Jesse. Jesse is a ghost. A very HOT ghost. To top it off accompaning Suze's new locker is Heather, a very pissed ghost who committed suicide over the Christmas break. Heather is hell bent on getting revenge on her ex-boyfriend. On the up-side though Suze makes friends (a very rare occurance for her) and finds a fellow mediator in her principal.

This series is AWESOME! READ IT!!! Suze is hilarious...

Summary: Am I the only person in the world who can't see dead people?
Review: Susannah Simon is the focus of this new series about a girl who has been seeing (and sometimes fighting) ghost since she was younger than Cole Sear (kid from The Sixth Sense) is now. And if some unfortunate ghost makes the mistake of getting Susannah mad, she can actually hit them. In Shadowland we meet Susannah, as she is moving in with her new stepfather and stepbrothers. She really wants to make this work for her mom but when she sees a ghost in her new room she can't help but look a little startled. And her mom practically breaks into tears. The ghost, Jesse, is actually pretty cool so she decides to just figure out how to help him move on later. But the next day at school she is introduced to Heather, a very violent ghost who killed herself when her boyfriend dumped her. She ends up having to hit the Heather, which isn't exactly the way Father Dom, another mediator, thinks it should be handled. But Heather isn't making it easy, she insists Sue is trying to take her place and almost kills Sue in a fit of rage. And after she puts Father Dom in the hospital, Sue decides there is only one way to stop Heather: an exorcism. But what if Heather is too powerful to be lured into such a trap? This book was great; the only problem is that they don't come out with more books faster. I also feel kind of left out, it's like everyone can see ghost but me. Just as well, I guess, I'd probably freak out if I did see one.

Summary: Great Book
Review: Susannah Simon is your average looking 16 year old girl, with a not so average life. She's a mediator, which means she can see and speak to ghosts. She's just moved to Carmel, CA, and she's living in a house with her new stepfather and 3 stepbrothers. Not only that, she is sharing her room with a ghost named Jesse, who was killed over 150 years ago. How much worse can it get?

This is an excellent book and I recommend it to anyone who is into paranormal phenomena.
