Rating: Summary: Can you say, Review: While Lirael, the hero of this engaging book (heroine is a politically incorrect term), is a magnificant character, Sameth, the worthless royal prince ("worthless" being my adjective, although many of the characters would agree wholeheartedly), is a complete bore. He's indecisive, unpossessing, and purile. Were it not for my devotion to Lirael, dirived from an earlier portion of the book dedicated solely to her, I don't believe I could have held on through Sameth's alotment. Being a Garth Nix fan, that was quite an unexpected experience for me. Only the knowledge that in the end I would again see my beloved character kept me from drowning in my own drool as I dozed through the middle.HOWEVER! Lirael did come back, older and wiser and--YES!--distainful of Sameth! It was a moment of joy. Their first meeting was one of those delightful experiences in which the characters come head to head in some sort of mutual misunderstanding or disagreement which in the end will be resolved to the: a) common good, b) dismay of the bad person (again, specifying gender--ie. bad guy/ girl--would be politically incorrect), or c) both A and B. In the end it was posible to forgive Sameth for being a terrible main character and well as a terrible prince. Or so was the case for me. Perhaps other readers will not be so magnamious. But that one scene was not the inspiration of my forgiveness. I forgave that minor flaw in the wake of a much larger one: the book did not end. In fact, it barely even paused. The phrase "to be continued" is not something I have ever had much patience with. I'd always rage in front of the telivision when I found out I'd have to wait until tomorrow. Imagine the state of my house after being told I have to wait over a year (although now only a few months and a few unbroken objects remain, my computer being one of the articles in that catigory--imagine that). I need to kick something. Don't expect to hear from me again; my monitor is moments away from being broken by a foot.
Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK EVER! Review: Lirael, the sequal to Sabriel, is the best book I've ever read. Most likely because I totally connected with the main character, Lirael (I love to read books about people who also love to read books). As a "late-bloomer" I loved being able to read about a heroine whose emotions and fears are real and I felt like I could empathize with the girl. Nix introduces us to two new breeds of Charter, the Wallmakers and Remembrancers (Or more correctly Remembrancer). Join Lirael and Sameth (a prince) on this journey of self-discovery and finding friends to a place beyond your wildest dreams. Nix leaves readers begging for more. ...
Rating: Summary: Excellent!!!.... makes you BEG for more! Review: This book was an excellent second book to Garth Nix's trilogy. You REALLY need to read the first one first though. When Lirael makes the dog and then fights the free magic creature I was amazed. Even if she did seem like a total misfit you had to love her because from the first chapter and her first suicidal attempt you could tell she was always in an adventure. Then when you heard about Sam- or Prince Samath -almost getting killed by Hands the first time you meet him! But the best part comes at the end... which I WONT tell you because that would soooooo ruin the book seeing as how if you are reading this you have NOT read the book yet. But how the end just STOPS i mean it literally stops in the middle of the action! Its killer! but it was a great way to basically force people to buy the third book because you HAVE TO KNOW if that great spirit... the one with the nine free magic creaters of the Charter. yea well i wont say anymore but OH MY GOODNESS READ THIS BOOK! it is increadible! but make sure you read Sabreal before you read this one because it will be loads better!
Rating: Summary: Awesome sequel! Review: After reading Sabriel by Garth Nix, could you think that he could get any better? He did! The sequel was just as enchanting as the first. The only problem I had with the book was that I thought it a bit too complex, making the storyline hard to follow at points. But overall it was generally very enjoying to read! :)
Rating: Summary: SPECTACULAR LIRAEL Review: I found this bok to be one of the best books I have ever read. Garth Nix weaves up fantasy, mystery, and adventure to create a genre of his own. It is a book anyone can enjoy and the characters are all developed with great detail. This is a book I couldn't put down you want to know what happens next. You can feel all the emotions of Lirael throughout the book it starts of with action with her wanting to kill herself. A awsome way to start a book. Ithink anybody could connect to how Lirael feels left out. I hope you read this spectacular book
Rating: Summary: I'm not good with titles (as you may have guessed) Review: Lireal: Daughter of the Clayr is far and away the best new fantasy novel (barring of course, Harry Potter, but the two are so different in style you can hardly put them in the same catagory). The book sporadicly jumps veiwpoints, beginning with a depressed Lireal who makes a melodramatic suicide attempt. From there we see her become the Third Assitant Librarian (yes, it deserves all those capitals). During the course of the next year or so, she A: Accidently sets free evil creatures, And B: Discovers (for lack of a better adjective) the Disreputeable Dog. A witty, mysterious creature of both Free Magic and Charter. Eventully we switch veiwpoints to Prince Sameth, who is promising at first, but soon progresses into a whiney twerp who spends his time hiding under the proverbial bed. In an effort to escape his problems, he goes off on what he has deluded himself into thinking is a heroic quest. Along the way he meets Mogget who is back and better than ever, he always has a wry comment, and I loved the fact that he just spontaniously falls asleep when Sameth is talking (that's what I felt like doing, personally). Meanwhile Lireal is sent on a all-important misson to save the world, which leads her right to Mogget and Sameth (who isn't doing to well with this hero stuff). Apparntly Mogget and The Disreputable Dog have had some, erm, *creative differances* the witty repartee between these two gave a welcome comedic relif. The story ends on the highest plot pinnacle (you know, when all the carachters say "hey lets go have a big battle type thing to decide the fate of the world"). The man needs to write faster, the next book won't out untill 2003. Can you belive that? I"m writing my congressman! Please excuse me, I have to go fume. Irately yours, Danelle-known-as-Nikki
Rating: Summary: Lirael Review: Lirael is so real, so human. Nix does a wonderful job portraying her. Her journey is fascinating. Super book.
Rating: Summary: Lirael kicks booty! Review: Garth Nix has done a great job of capturing the reader's mind and imagination with the book Lirael. This book is fulled with adventure, riddles and a love for the characters. Those who have read Sabriel will be very pleased with this sequel. The book contains some original things so you can recognize things from the book Sabriel but he adds new twists that will keep you wanting to read on. The book seems long when you pick it up, but take it from me it doesn't seem half that much. :)
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: This book was the best book that I've read all year! I read all 700 and something pages in two days. It has the perfect mix of scary parts and other exciting parts. I didn't ever get bored. onece I started it I couldn't stop reading! It's really great!
Rating: Summary: Lirael is way beyond the usual fantasy Review: I am almost finished with this great novel. I am resisting the ending not because it is boring but because it is awesome.it was an unexpected treasure that I found on the bottom shelf in [local store]. I have also read the first novel,Sabriel, and that was also a great piece of fantasy unlike any other. This book is mostly for girls in their teens. I would not reccomend these books to anyone under ten due to some scary content and ideas.
