Rating: Summary: Learn From The Clayr Review: Have you ever been in a position where you felt much too old for something, but had no way to get out? This is what happens to Lirael, who is 14, living with the Clayr (a race of psychic women who gain the ability to See around puberty) and without the Sight. On the brink of suicide, the most powerful Clayr on the glacier (twins Sanar and Ryelle) tell Lirael that Sightlessness isn't the end of the world. This encouragement spurs Lirael on, especially when she is assigned to the Great Library of the Clayr as a Third Assistant Librarian. After much exploring, Lirael finds her fate. She must join up with Prince Sameth to save his best friend Nicholas, or face the immenent destruction of both Ancelstierre and the Old Kingdom.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Read Review: Lirael starts off in the Glacier, the home of the Clayr, women who can see into the future. But Lirael is different, she cannot see anything no matter how hard she tries. The story is too complex to say anything here, as in if I started, I would have to tell you the whole story as it is all connected to everything else: kind of like explaining Lord of the Rings without spoiling anything. But, I give you my word that Lirael will satisfy a reader who loves long, fantasy books.
Rating: Summary: Awsome Review: This is one of the best books i have read. It was quite dissappointing though when you get to the end and find out you have to get the 3rd book "Abhorsen." I would deffintley reccomend these books to a person who enjoys adventure and mystery.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I first read Garth Nix's _Sabriel_ several years ago. While on a vacation to San Francisco, I happened to see _Lirael_ on a shelf. I was so excited that I purchased it immediately. (It was the hardback copy, I didn't even think to look and see if it was in paperback..., which it was.) Over the next two days (I was busy) I poured through the book reading every page with excitement. Of course, as I reached the end I realized this book was only part one! I then reread the book less than a week later. Fortunately the sequel _Abhorsen_ is now available. This book manages to stand by itself as a sequel, but I would recommend that you read _Sabriel_ first, just so that you have the whole story under your belt. Garth Nix writes in a style perfect for young readers, but not so simple as to lose older readers. (I myself am 21.) Some parts of the story may be too dark for very young children, but middle school and above should be okay. Though I have never read _Harry Potter_, I would guess that those adults who like Harry Potter would also enjoy these books. So, read _Sabriel_, read _Lirael_ and read _Abhorsen_. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Lirael Review: Lireal is great book with a mix of many different things. It's got a great plot and eveything. I enjoyed reading this book 100%. If any of you out there haven't read this book you should. I highly recommend it. Let me tell you a little bit about the book, this book tells the story of a young girl who lives in an underground place called the Clayr. The Clayr is made up of women that can see the future. It is called the sight. Lirael [is very disappaointed that] she doesn't have this. I certainly will not telll you any more abot this book you will have to read it yourself.
Rating: Summary: fluffier than it is concise Review: Don't scroll too far back in the reviews, else you'll run into one that posted massive spoilers. Sabriel fascinated me, and so I picked this one up. Unfortunately for me, it didn't live up to what I remembered Sabriel as being. Lirael is so heavy on the description both of the characters and the scenery that the characters don't get enough enough pages to develop any noticeable depth. It takes several hundred pages to see any quirks and personality that define a person, and so I spent much of my reading time wanting to beat them upside their heads. I personally do not need to know every detail of the room that Lirael enters. There isn't a discernable evil in the book either. Just everyone's feeling of impending doom. Yes, evil usually does want to destroy the hero's world, but it would be nice to know why. Can someone be evil without a reason? It is still a nice read; it is simply that is a bit like watching a plant grow: it takes forever to get anywhere.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: I really like this book. I like the way Lirael doesn't know why she is different from all the other Clayr and then how she goes exploring and finds out who she is. I can't wait to read the next one.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book Review: I've just finished Lirael, and it's one of the best books I've ever read. The story captures you, and takes you through a complex and fascinating world of magic and danger. I can't reccomend this strongly enough!
Rating: Summary: Attention Librarians Review: Other reviews have already covered this wonderful fantasy book very well. I would like to recommend it especially to librarians for a fun busman's holiday. Lirael, when her psychic skills appear to be slow in developing, becomes a Third Assistant Librarian. In an almost Terry Pratchett like moment, she is taken to the "Robing Room, a huge room full of all the equipment, weapons, and miscellaneous items the librarians needed, from climbing ropes to boathooks." After some rather challenging experiences in the stacks, she does go on to further adventures in the outside world, but by then you will be hooked.
Rating: Summary: Only four because it's like a stew of ideas from other books Review: LIRAEL is excellent, make no mistake, but as I was reading it, I kept pausing and thinking, "Haven't I read something like this before?" I thought about it, and my deja vu is easy to explain. In making this book, Mr. Nix basically stirred the delicious ideas from other fantasy stories and served it up again. It still tastes good, not surprisingly, but it's not new. The Disreputable Dog's contrariness is similar to Alanna's cat Faithful in SONG OF THE LIONESS. Many authors use idea of a talking animal following a human around, but primarily Philip Pullman in the amazing HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy. The infirmary resembles the hospital wing in the less interesting HARRY POTTER books, and the theme of person-not-fitting-in-and-knowing-she's-not-really-destined/related-to-her-surroundings is familiar, but I can't remember why just now. It's still a good book. You get that coming-home feeling of reading a favorite again when you read it the first time.
