Summary: The Best!
Review: Everyone else has seemed to cover the reviews and such for this book, complained about the whinning Prince Sameth..etc,etc. I have absoulutley no complaints, I loved this book, it comparest to none. Up until I read "Sabriel" my favorite trilogy was the "His Dark Materials" set by Philip Pullman, and this clearly surpassed that. I cannot wait until the release of "Abhorsen" and I congratulate Garth Nix on his wonderful novel!

Summary: Excellent sequel to Sabriel
Review: Sabriel set the stage for what begins to take place in Lirael. Once again we meet Touchstone and Sabriel in their quest to put the dead to rest who reek havoc, harm and destruction on their beloved "Old Kingdom," a world that exists right next to modern England and only separated by a wall filled with powerful charter magic. However, unaware that they have a new ally in Lirael and her faithful companion, they leave the "Old Kingdom" entering the modern world of politics in hopes to keep people who cannot protect themselves in this magical kingdom from crossing the border into the "Old Kingdom." Lirael our new herione, just as spunky and likeable as Sabriel with the aid of her faithful friend begins a self-discovery into who she really is, what her path will be and how she alone holds the power to save the Old Kingdom and its heir from imminent destruction. In her search, she follows a history full of dark, old magic that will eventually return everyone to the beginning of charter magic. This book reads quickly and brings the characters to life easily. You can lose yourself in the story. Somewhat graphic in its description of everything, even evil parasitic death forms; it never dumbs down the subjects of death, pain, betrayal and hurt that life can bring. This novel will please even the pickiest of thriller readers. Well Done, Garth!

Summary: Lirael
Review: Lirael is the breath taking sequel to Sabriel one of the only modern books which can equal it in its amazing network of pure fantasy and its classic good versus evil.

This book takes a new twist and focuses upon the mysterious Clayr one of the bloodlines of the old kingdom. I for one was intrigued by these beings and yearned to learn more in the first book. Within these ôracles ranks there is one who has not been gifted with the ability of the "Sight". This is the power which allow the Clayr to see in the futur. She is 14 and has not been gifted with it while here other friends had it anything for 2 to 4 years ago. she feels completely out of place until she becomes an assistant librarian in the Clayrs massive library. ALong with her magicaly summoned dog and her curiousity she learns more and becomes a more calm woman.

The other part part of the story focuses upon Sameth or prince sam who is sabriels and touchstones (the king and queens) son. he decides to leave the royal life for he is the Abhorsen in waiting. the only defence against evil necromancers of the world yet he is afraid to venture into death. As he runs away he then runs into mogget an incredibly powerful free magic elemental who serves the abhorsen framily.

Meanwhile Lirael has found three mysterious gifts and is given a quest. She meets Sameth and much is revealed between the two such as they are both looking for sams friend Nicholas who has been in the grips of the evil necromancer Hedge.

The book revolves around the fact theat there is an ancient evil growing which is even more powerful than Kerrigor. Plans have been set in motion against the bloodlines and now every force possible is preparing and learning and waiting to defend against this mysterious force. The story turns and twists and this book is an instint favorite. The best part is that there has to be a sequel which i am eagerly awayiting i hope this helped (Please email me if you have different views or if you want to talk about the two books thnx)

Summary: The Perfect Sequil to Sabriel!
Review: It had everything about information that was announced, but not elaborated in the first. Sabriel circled around the basic knowledge of the Old Kingdom and the differences between it and Ancelstierre. Lirael brances off the information given in the first and joins the North and the South. There are many perils still putting the two in danger. They are not joined and still has the Wall dividing them, but the relationships between the governing offices have greatly improved. The magic of the Old Kingdom isn't as unstable and the Charter returned to its original greatness. The experiances that the characters take part in are exceptional. Garth Nix captures the voices of the characters to what would be expected, and then slowly changes them into who they are and what they are destined for. The new characters and the old coexist with an understanding of not knowing their true identities. The ending will blow you away. There are twists and turns the story line takes that confuse you and get you back on track. A must read for any fan of mystics and magic.

Summary: Continuing the Sabriel tradition; not just for children
Review: Lirael continues the unique fantasy world woven by Garth Nix in Sabriel. Like Sabriel, Lirael is filled with intriguing and real characters and a story that grabs and keeps your attention. In some ways, I feel that Lirael is more of a set-up for the sequel because Lirael focuses somewhat more on character than action, especially at the beginning. But the characters are so real and so interesting that you want to keep reading just to learn more about the characters themselves. While the focus of the book might be slightly more on character development, there is also definitely story that keeps one reading. I hope that in Abhorsen, Nix can continue his excellent balance of plot and character development and not focus totally on plot (there is a lot of story left to be told!). I have thoroughly enjoyed both Sabriel and Lirael and would highly recommend them to readers of ANY age. Children and adults alike will find kindred spirits in these characters. Nix's world is creative and unique and his stories are worth reading multiple times. If you enjoyed Sabriel, you will definitely want to read Lirael. How long do I have to wait for Abhorsen??

Summary: A great book
Review: Garth Nix's amazing book Sabriel gave fantasy readers an exellent read when it was published a few years ago. His newest novel, Lirael, is equally as exciting and compelling. This book is something I would suggest for anyone, whether you are into fantasy/sci-fi or not. It has a sense of realism rarely accomplished by writers in this genre. While many writers would try to make the book more real by making the characters less mystical, with more obvious human characteristics, Garth Nix has given the characters a sense of reality by not making them seem childish, or funny, or trying to insert any modern-day phrases or practices. Overall, this is one of the best books I have read, and I look forward to the release of Abhorsen with great anticipation. Congratulations to Garth Nix on this wonderful book!

Summary: Lirael Disappoints Expectations
Review: Like others, I found Garth Nix' Sabriel to be a sleeper -- in fact, I think it was one of the best fantasy books in the last 10 years. If you haven't read it, go back and get it!

However, I was disappointed with Lirael, largely due to expectations set by the author in earlier works, and by the publisher in marketing the book.

First and foremost, all the other Garth Nix books that I've read were relatively stand-alone, and though this book said that it was a sequel to the stand-alone Sabriel, nothing was said that it was the middle of a trilogy. In fact, the book is the first of a duology, and unlike any other book by Garth Nix, it comes to an incomplete and unsatisfying ending.

The only major "mystery" set up and revealed at the end of the book is spoiled by looking at the cover of the book and/or reading the description of the main character. All the other mysteries of the book await the conclusion of the final book Abhorsen.

I also found the male character whiny and unsympathetic. I understand why the author made him this way, but didn't enjoy it.

Overall, I'd say wait for the paperback edition, or until Abhorsen is out before purchasing this one. The book is still better then average, but will be disapointing both to a fan and to someone newly arrived to the trilogy. Stick with Sabriel and wait it out for Abhorsen.

Summary: Best yet
Review: I thought nothing would beat Sabriel, but Garth Nix has outdown himself. I love an exciting, magical feel to a story. If you've outgrown Harry Potter, also try SIGHTS by Susanna Vance. It rules!

Summary: none
Review: With Lirael, Nix joins the ranks of Disch, Jacques, and Pullman when it comes to engaging fantasy for young adults. Lirael is an intoxicating and captivating tale for children of all ages, and lovers of good fantasy... Gary S. Potter Author/Poet.

Summary: GARTH NIX DID IT AGING
Review: One of the best book I have ever read it is one of the few books that can compare to Sabriel. The last chapter will have you on your seat. It will also make you shout "WHEN IS ABHORSEN COMING OUT!!"Which is going to be the squeal to Lirael.
